- Voting Question: Recent early retirement.?
(Mon, 02 Jun 2008 11:15:32 GMT)
Active retirement :
I have recently taken an early retirement from work at the age of 60 because of ill-health. I would like to take up a job or interest that is home based and maybe includes the use of my computer. Any suggestions? I use to run my own successful retail leisurewear business. I would consider almost anything really to keep my mind alert and active.

- Voting Question: how liquid are the funds in a Fidelity/T. Rowe Mutual Fund account?
(Thu, 29 May 2008 22:37:12 GMT)
Active retirement :
I have a Roth IRA through my bank that has several mutual funds but those are all for retirement and I don't withdraw from them.
I have some extra money I don't need unless I would be making a large purchase or theres an emergency. Instead of letting it sit in my checking account, I of course want to get in mutual funds (and eventually e-trade, but that's for the future).
My question is how easy is it to withdraw money from a Fidelity or T. Rowe Price account? Can I just transfer money from

- Resolved Question: When can I expect to receive my final active duty pay check from the Army?
(Fri, 23 May 2008 15:18:08 GMT)
Active retirement :
I am medically retired from the Army. I have been on leave and PTDY. (leave from 5/2-5/7, PTDY 5/7-5/27) My effective retirement date is 5/27. I just found out that i am being audited and that supposedly there is a no pay due for the EOM pay b/c of the audit. They replied back that I must contact finance to find out the status of it. Is that normal and how long does it take in that situation? I have relocated from my former duty station to another state. (TX to MD)

- Resolved Question: Young mothers, did you regret having a baby so soon? Or do you wish it would have been different?
(Thu, 22 May 2008 04:04:59 GMT)
Active retirement :
I'm just curious to know if you are a young mother (16-24) and you had wished that you could have done things differently and not had a baby. They say these years are our prime years and that we should go to school, get married, buy a house (or whatever) and be financially set to have children in order to give them the life they deserve. I agree with that to a sense. I am only 22 and I would love to have a baby. But I get told that I should wait, that I am still young, that there is plenty of
- Resolved Question: military retirement pay and inflation?
(Wed, 21 May 2008 01:00:02 GMT)
Active retirement :
Every year congress approves pay raises for the military (usually around 3.5%) to stay in balance with inflation. Does retirement pay stay on par with this? For example, if i was to retire tomorrow after serving 20 years active duty and retire as an E-8, would my 50% retirement pay entitlement stay on par with the CURRENT year's base pay of an E-8 with 20 years in? Like when 2009 or 2010 rolled around, would i still be receiving 50% base pay for that current year's income of an E-8 with 20
- Resolved Question: What are some good motorcycle friendly retirement areas?
(Tue, 20 May 2008 15:43:21 GMT)
Active retirement :
I'm thinking about retiring within the next five years and I want to make sure that wherever I end up has an active and friendly Harley atmosphere. I'll likely have to move out of northern california since my property taxes alone are over $27k per year and I'm thinking I'll need the excess cash from the sale of my homes to retire comfortably. I'd like a place where like-minded bikers can get together, take rides and discuss all the new Harley trends (bikes, clothing, parts, etc.). Has to be

Unfourtunately, I recieved a general under honorable conditions discharge for misconduct, sep code JKQ RE code 3. I have a 2 year wait to reenlist active duty. - Resolved Question: In what type of 403b should I invest my teacher retirement bonus?
(Sun, 18 May 2008 13:26:20 GMT)
Active retirement :
I am retiring very soon, but plan to leave the money in the 403b for a minimum of 5-10 years. If I don't put it in a 403b, I will lose almost half of it to taxes. Someone suggested the Oppenheimer Active Allocation Fund, but, no matter what, it has to be approved by the school district.

Now I took early retirement after 30yrs of teaching, but my old college has offered me an ad hoc advisory role. While I am interested, should I start doing all the other things that my wife and I have not had time for, or use this as a backdrop.
The point being, that while travelling and doing all the things on our wishlists would this keep my knowledge more active, or would it be a burden. Should I say thanks but no thanks.

I'm retired, early, because of a big on-the-job accident. I've been very active academically and professionally and athletically for the past, well, up until I was forced to retire 8 years ago. Now, I'm supposed to be happy since I can stay up as late as I want, sleep as late as I want, and my wife is very supportive of me and caters to me in her cooking and general daily activities, but, when I go to bed at night, I look at another day "wasted", another day when I didn't put in a work day a

- Resolved Question: Is the army's retirement plan a pension, or one-time lump sum?
(Sun, 20 Apr 2008 06:34:24 GMT)
Active retirement :
From what i read it sounds like you can retire from the Army after serving 20 years (So i'd be a 42 year old retiree!) at which time they calculate half your pay, multiplied by a factor related to how much you really contributed, to give you what you get for retirement. But is this a big lump sum they give you at once? Or is this something where they begin paying you a pension, where you just get the same size check every month (about half your active pay) until you die, whether that be at a
