Open Question: College student needs to move out asap to save my future. Need advice please?
(Sun, 21 Mar 2010 06:10:19 GMT)
With every passing day, my controlling parents are trying to make me (19 yrs old) quit my jobs and take less credit hours at school. I cried so bad today on the freeway while driving because I can't sleep at night (they are 150% disrespectful) and won't turn the TV down and wouldn't let me out of the house to go to work. I'm on scholarships, am working 3 good jobs on campus and have great networking at my university. We have zero dorms/housing on campus. I'm on scholarships & I work 25hrs a week and I don't give my abusive family a dime anymore. I will call child protective services if I leave so they can keep an eye on my kid brother's safety. I'm a media major and I've already bought a desktop, laptop, camera, and some other equipment and have bought necessities in personal areas. I am planning to apply for food stamps. I live in Michigan and I used their calculator online and they said my 6G income doesn't count as income to them because the university paid me. So I can get roughly $200 a month in food stamps. A car. That's what's holding me up. A bus is not an option because it's not safe where I live and I'd be alone. How does one buy a car... dealership or craigslist or ? I am leaning toward a Honda Civic, Fit or Accord. I'd take out federal loans to pay for furniture and few months rent and I'd use my income this summer (I already have jobs) to pay these loans in a savings account. I have insurance because of a car accident that left me disabled (neck and back), but I never went ahead and applied for Disability with the state even though an ortho gave me a letter to do so. Should I register or not?

Resolved Question: How do you get forward in life when you're in bad position?
(Wed, 17 Feb 2010 05:57:07 GMT)
I think me and every twenty something year old is going through the same problem. Is it just the economic times or did I do something wrong? I graduated high school in 2007 with a good GPA and high SAT scores. I was not allowed to work during high school because my parents just wanted me to focus on my education. I also got my beginner's permit my senior year because I needed it for my driver's ed class. So, comes my senior year of school and my parents divorced. My dad moves away and I'm stuck with a mentally unstable mother-not just saying that-she is diagnosed, and my 3 younger and 1 older siblings. I would've loved to work that summer and get my actual license but had to stay and help watch the younger kids. It also didn't help that my mom always was "too busy" to take me to the DMV or just flat out didn't want to, and was too busy trying to find a replacement husband. I sat around the house and decided that I should go to college. I moved out Jan 2008 and started school with absolutely NO support from my parents. I lived on campus and mooched off of everybody. I had no money or transportation anywhere. Whenever there was a break I had to stay with my roommate because my mom wouldn't come get me. (She got a new boyfriend who hates all her children and I'm not "allowed" to ride in his vehicles.) On top of that I'm an art major and I need supplies and things but I need a ride to Hobby Lobby to get them so when I do get random money from a friend or my dad 6 states away sends me like $50 every 3 months I have to pay someone gas money to take me to Hobby Lobby and use the rest for supplies. I've lived like this for 2 years. I hitched a ride back home (2 hours away from the college) during my first summer and got kicked out because her boyfriend said I was too grown to be there and the second summer she had given my room to my younger siblings so I had to share a room with a 5 and a 17 year old. During either of those summers I never made it to the DMV or to get a job. We don't have a computer at her house so there was no putting applications in online and she never felt like driving us anywhere unless we had "gas money"... I returned to school August 2010 and it just got to the point where I was tired of being a mooch. I borrow everything from tampons to shampoo to pencils. I was miserable. I just sat in my dorm room everyday because I didn't have money to go be social. I got a college refund and lived off of $400 from October and I'm finally down to $9. I couldn't stand it. I decided to quit school not too long ago. My grades were awesome and everything. I was in my first junior semester. Now I'm back in my hometown sneaking to live in a housing development with a sibling. I sleep on her couch and can’t move my things in. I HAVE to find a job because I have 6 months to return to school before the loans come back. And yes-I decided to go to a private college and get a good education which left me with Massive loans. Luckily for me I may have a job at a Burger King that's within walking distance from my new home cause ya know. I still have no license and even if I did, it’s not like I would be able to buy a car, pay for tags, and pay insurance every month. I can't even keep my prepaid phone on half the time. I'm shocked I even got the BK call back because I have NO work experience. If I don’t get this job idk what to do cause I’ve applied to everywhere in walking distance-that's all I'm limited too unless I want to dish out gas money that I don't have. And Bk money isn’t going to get me too far. I’m almost to the point of military or adult gigs. Military is out cause I have gauged ears and unless I get those surgically fixed it’s considered a disability and plus-military isn’t for everyone. (I’m a sewing, drawing, instrument playing, rainbow hair, metal and punk liking, artistic type, if you catch my drift.) I couldn’t be a stripper if I wanted to-can’t make it to the strip club. What do you do in this situation? I haven’t fucked up. I have no kids. I don’t drink at all. Never done drugs in my life. Grades are good-my teachers loved me and hated that I had to leave. No criminal record. I don’t spend money on ridiculous things like clothes and jewelry and shoes. No car-no license-no job. Barely a home. Do I get knocked up by some military brat? Do I sleep with some old guy? Any advice would be lovely. why would i want another loan? I'm $25,000 in debt now from college?

Resolved Question: Can my parents claim me still as a dependent?
(Sat, 13 Feb 2010 01:09:49 GMT)
My parents told me they have claimed me as a dependent last year at age 24. I am 25 years old now and do not attened school. I am on social security disability income. I have mental disabilities related to a documented brain injury from birth. However I was able to obtain and work two part time jobs last year and made $12,000 aside from having my SSDI benefits. I tried college again for a few months and completed a couple classes then discontinued schooling. I also cover my own medical insurance, vision insurance, medicine and medical needs, hygene products, phone bill and pay them for food and internet $113 a month. I also pay for my own transportation if needed be it a cab for work or for a friend to pick me up. They refuse to accept any rent payments from me. I do my own taxes online with Turbo tax and I will get a large refund from my federal return. I checked the box i can be claimed as a dependent and it went down to $1. That makes me very upset, I have never been able to have a tax return because I have always been claimed by my parents. If anything they should claim my sister who is 15 years old with no job. She doesnt pay for anything and is dependent on them for everything. At least they have a kid they can claim so they should be happy with that. They won't give me a cut if they do claim me, thats sad because I could really use a tax return for things I need. I have been working on trying to re build my credit from years ago and want to put the money towards that to try to better myself financially credit wise. So then I will at least have a chance to get my own place with little or no trouble. So can they still claim me with the infomation I have provided here? If I file before they do and they do claim me then do they have to file an amend x return if I check that I can not be claimed as a dependent and file my return? I was forced to resign and it is considered constructive discharge from my scond job. This year I still have my first job however they are discriminating against me and get less than 10 hours per week. Looking for more work. At least I try to work. Card ron - Even though for last year I made $12,000 more than the $3,000 allowance I read on the IRS website aren't I considered dependent if I have a mental or physical disability that is not temperary lasting? I pay for my own medical and vision costs. Transportation if needed. Some food costs. All they pay for is shelter and food. I pay for everything else on my own. I recieve social security disability because I do have a brain injury that limits life activities frontal lobe damage to be exact. However I am able to still work obviously as I did have two part time jobs last year and I have held my first job for over a year now. Oh and I forgot to mention clothing. When I do go shopping I buy my own clothes with my own money. Unless it is given to me as a gift for special occassions such as a holiday or birthday. How do they prove that they provide more than 50% of my support? How do I prove I support my own transportation, clothing, medical needs, vision, food costs and phone bill? and the fact that I pay them a portion for food and internet out of my money? Do my parents have to know how much I made last year along with social security benefits to prove if they support more than 50% of my support? I would like to keep that infomation confidential as they don't tell me how much their income is. It's only fair.

Resolved Question: Workers Compensation PD award amount?
(Thu, 04 Feb 2010 17:19:13 GMT)
I was wondering if someone could give me an estimate on how much I may be looking at for a Worker's Compensation Permanent Disability award (if I settle for a lump sum amount)? Work Situation Before Injury: I was a Line Cook that worked very hard. Involved constant movement, lifting and squatting. Was making around $350-$390 a week. Employee of the month. Would of gotten atleast 2-3 more raises in time it's been. Injury: I actually have two injuries but I am only concerned about my primary injury. Accident happened on January 12th 2007 (3 years ago). Slip and fall. Accident report was filled, went to doctor's office immediately. Everything has been filled, reported and done correctly. I sustained a shattered femur bone. It was a part that held my patella (knee cap) in place. I have had 2 surgeries attempting to correct problem. Gone through PT (physical therapy). Now making $200 a week from Worker's Comp checks from Insurance company. Doctor's Words: He feels that everything has been done to help the problem and no other medical assistance is needed. Has put in a PDR (Permanent Disability Rating) of 20% on Right leg/knee. I live in the state of NC. I just recently went to college. I am hoping to get some sort of reembursetment because I needed to take online college because I couldn't walk to classes. This situation should be over already but my lawyer is saying I need to wait for a final judgement on my shoulder (2nd injury) before finshing Knee injury. What do you think I should be intitled to? Do you think I could get reimbursement for college loans? Is it smarter to wait for final decision on 2nd injury before I resolve knee injury case? @mbrcatz That didn't answer that much. I wont be able to work at a job squatting or using my legs so they'll have to put me into a job. I'm not going to just have to "get another job, a desk job" as you so casually say. THEY will have to do that. Also, my lawyer hasn't kept me very well informed other wise I wouldn't be asking this question in the first place. Also, are you saying that every case ever in NC gets 300 weeks of partial and thats all they are intitled to? What about injuries that cause 90% of permanent disability and they need atleast 5-6 years just to talk again. Try not to be so vague please.

Resolved Question: PLEASE HELP-brother wont talk to family over girlfriend who's after his money?
(Wed, 03 Feb 2010 06:25:56 GMT)
PLEASE give me advice.. My brother is mentally ill but able to function in society. He has aspergers which is high functioning autism and he probably has other problems too..personality disorder maybe. For a long time he looked on on line dating sites to find a girlfriend. That was the most important mission in his life: he must have a gf. Finally in November he met someone who didn't reject him. After talking to her online for 3 weeks, he met her and she moved in with him the following week. She confided in me and my parents that she hated living with her stepfather because he makes jokes about her being overweight. She's 21 by the way, my brother is 23. He works as a custodian. Ever since they moved together, she has treated him like dirt. She threatens to leave him on a daily basis. She accuses him of giving her high blood pressure, anxiety attacks, and nervous breakdowns. She told him she would leave him unless he gave her an engagement ring. He bought her a diamond engagement ring in December. He wanted a long engagement but she is insisting the wedding be this summer. She is also insisting he takes her on a cruise for the honeymoon and she wants a new car. My brother isn't rich...he's baring making it by now. She refuses to work. She wants to go on medicaid and disability. She says she won't work until she gets therapy because she's had such a bad past, she says. She claims she's had a hysterectomy so she can't get pregnant. She already has 2 children from a previous boyfriend. She never sees the kids. The ex boyfriends parents take care of them. Everyone in my family is really worried about my brother. When we tell him that, he gets angry and blows us off. He's told me that either we all (his family) accept his girlfriend or he's never going to see us again and change his number. He *is* mentally ill though....there must be something we can do..this woman I'm afraid is after his money...she already told my brother that he could sign her name so she can use his insurance. But he can't! That's illegal until they are married. I told him that..he's afraid she'll leave him. PLEASE HELP WHAT CAN WE DO????

Voting Question: Maternity leave, NY state short term disability maternity leave-when does it start?
(Sun, 18 Oct 2009 22:37:57 GMT)
I have gotten a few different answers on this and its just confusing me. I am going to be receiving NY state short term disability insurance for my maternity leave. Does that start from the day I actually go into the hospital to have the baby then 6 weeks after? if I go out before the day I go into labor then do I not get paid unless I have a doctors note? Then 2nd part to that question if someone knows the answer, if I do have a doctors note to go out early would my 6 weeks start then or would I get paid for whatever time I went out early with doctors note plus the 6 weeks? I have looked online for this answer but of course NY state websites are not too helpful at all. I am going to meet with my HR rep at work next week but its been making me anxious lately not knowing about this and I only have 3 weeks to go. Worried about going early and not knowing how this works. PLEASE only answer if you are sure, no guessing

Voting Question: Do you want to "fix" Health Care.. without the Government intrusion?
(Sat, 12 Sep 2009 15:21:34 GMT)
Aptly called the Patients' Choice Act, it provides a path to universal coverage by redirecting current subsidies for health insurance to individuals. It also provides a new safety net that guarantees access to insurance for those with pre-existing conditions. The nexus of their plan is redirecting the $300 billion annual tax subsidy for employment-based health insurance to individuals in the form of refundable, advanceable tax credits. Families would get $5,700 a year and individuals $2,300 to buy insurance and invest in Health Savings Accounts. Low-income Americans would get a supplemental debit card of up to $5,000 to help them purchase insurance and pay out-of-pocket costs. They would have an incentive to spend wisely since up to one-fourth of any unspent money in the accounts could be rolled over to the next year. The combination of the refundable tax credit and debit card gives lower-income Americans a way out of the Medicaid ghetto so they can have the dignity of private insurance. States could provide one-stop insurance shopping through new Health Care Exchanges rather than giving the federal government control, as most Democratic plans would do. And it frees up Medicaid money and provides added resources to the states to target additional help to those with disabilities and low incomes. It also calls for auto-enrollment to expand insurance coverage: People will have many options and opportunities to select insurance, but if they don't make an active choice they can be automatically enrolled in private policies financed by the tax credit. Who will control the system? Doctors and patients, or politicians and regulators? That's the crux of this year's health-care debate. This is the GOP plan: More Coverage, Less Cost without Government Intrusion into our decision making http://online.wsj.com/article/SB124277551107536875.html PS. This was put out in the middle May, 2009.

Resolved Question: I pretend to be other people online via myspace and facebook. What's wrong with me?
(Sun, 06 Sep 2009 14:51:23 GMT)
I pretend to be other people online via myspace and facebook accounts. I understand that I do it because I wish I were better myself, it takes away the insecurities of someone rejecting the REAL me, and in turn rejecting ME, but I don't really understand anything beyond that. I'm attractive (now) due to reconstructive surgery, but I've always been teased my whole life because I was born with a minor facial bone structure deformity and I sorta suck at school due to really severe ADD and learning disabilities. I've always been faulted for everything because my older sister is the "superstar" in everything..school, boyfriends, social life, sports, beauty pageants, EVERYTHING. So in that view, I understand why I do it, but I'm 19 currently and in college and I still can't stop despite wanting to very badly. It's almost like a security blanket. If I'm not accepted in real life, I can just run to the imagined one with the online friends who do accept me..but only because they're seeing someone else and not me aside from personality. I know it's horrible and dishonest and mean. I'll manage to stop for a year, and then start up again. I don't have insurance out here and can't afford to get any so therapy is not an option. Does anyone have any advice or insight that might help me? I know the only way to solve the problem is by fixing MY problem(s) whatever they are. *PS, i know it's horrible.

Voting Question: Need SERIOUS dating help....he is disabled and I am not...what to do?
(Mon, 24 Aug 2009 13:48:43 GMT)
Ok well I met this guy online and we met in person, he is disabled where he can walk with a cane. He is 34, and I am 37 and we have both been married before. He will walk with a cane forever and never be able to drive or work his normal job again, due to a muscle/never damage. I like him, i really do and I was not raised to discriminate, but I cannot help wondering how our lives will be. It has been 3 weeks and he already talks about marriage and I am scared. I do not want to hurt him but wonder if I can in the long run be willing to be the one who will always work, and do alot of chores and etc alone, as unforunately he is unable to lift due to his balance and mobility. I feel horrible in even talking about this but I'm so confused...do I let the guy go who treats me wonderful, or do i run from the guy who wants to marry me after 3 weeks and has a disability? Oh BTW, he has no insurance and lives with mom and dad. I have a good job with state with great benefits and have my own house....i often wonder if he was not in this position would he feel the same about me (of course he syas hell no...i was sent to him for a reason and he loves me) or is it more cause he see's a way out of mom and dad's house with great benefits. Please no nasty responses as i am very into him , just trying to see if it is real and for the right reasons.....and can I handle his situation, it is alot. I will always have to drive as well as work and do the house/yard work BUT in return i may get a great guy. please help!!! So confused. Thanks

Resolved Question: FMLA question help please!?
(Sun, 02 Aug 2009 02:41:22 GMT)
Ok I am 25 weeks pregnant and I have been at my employer for over a year and I meet all the requirement for FMLA. My son will have to have surgery in about two weeks and I know I can only take leave once in a 12 month period so I was planning on taking it and then just going back after the baby is born.So my question is if I take FMLA does my employer have to continue to give me my benefits (i.e. insurance, short/long term disability, vol. life)? Resolved Question: FMLA-taking it while pregnant, but taking it to care for my son?!?
(Sun, 02 Aug 2009 02:39:19 GMT)
Ok I am 25 weeks pregnant and I have been at my employer for over a year and I meet all the requirement for FMLA. My son will have to have surgery in about two weeks and I know I can only take leave once in a 12 month period so I was planning on taking it and then just going back after the baby is born.So my question is if I take FMLA does my employer have to continue to give me my benefits (i.e. insurance, short/long term disability, vol. life)? I live in NC and I can't find much info online. Any advice would be great, Thanks in advance!!

Resolved Question: If a person who receives SSI Disability insurance is convicted of a felony?
(Tue, 28 Jul 2009 07:09:28 GMT)
There is a guy in our town who was recently arrested for distribution of hydrocodone. He was always known for being bad news, and I think he was put in jail overnight once for something else. However, he became confined to a wheelchair a few years ago after nerve damage due to diabetes. This didn't stop his behavior though, hence, the arrest. The case hasn't gone to court yet, but this is my question: He receives SSI (Social Security Disability Benefits Payments) every month. If he is found guilty of this crime (I'm pretty sure it's a felony?), would he lose his monthly benefits? This is in the state of Louisiana. I've heard some people say he would and some say he won't. Someone asked me about it and I couldn't find an answer online. Anyone know? Thanks.

Resolved Question: My insurance company let my disability policy lapse. What can I do?
(Mon, 15 Jun 2009 06:17:57 GMT)
I've had this policy with Mass Mutual for 15 years. When I got the latest invoice for the premium in March, I paid it right away. I went online to my bank and ordered a check to be sent to the insurance company. Three months later, the bank contacted me to inform me that the check never cleared. I called up Mass Mutual and they told me that they never received the payment, and my policy has lapsed. Now they want a reinstatement fee of $283, plus a higher annual premium, plus tons of paperwork to reinstate. This isn't fair, the insurance company never informed me that I was in danger of losing the policy. Whose to say that they didn't "misplace" my payment intentionally? The fact that my bank informed that the check didn't clear proves that I did order the payment to be sent. What recourse do I have?

Resolved Question: Constant Health Insurance Calls?
(Tue, 19 May 2009 18:27:41 GMT)
I've literally gotten six or seven calls from different health insurance companies saying they're responding to my request for health benefit information. I...never requested anything from anyone. I don't know if my name got on some kind of a list or something--I assume it had to have since all of the companies are different. The only thing I've done the last week online is register to take the LSAT and I don't have any idea how the two could be connected. It's either that or some really weird elaborate thing where someone went to several different websites for different health insurers and gave them my cell phone number. but I'm not sure what kind of information you have to give them for them to call. If it's just a number, okay I'll deal with it, but should I worry that more extreme information's being given out? The only reason I ask is that all these companies are telling me I'm pre-approved. I'm used to that from credit-card companies but not insurance.. One of them kept talking about disability insurance--I'm not disabled in any way. Very confused. Anyone have any idea how this could have happened? http://michelle-obama.cn/health-insurance.html

Resolved Question: The DWP are keeping it vey quiet but do you know this?
(Thu, 09 Apr 2009 11:41:13 GMT)
did you know about this? I bet not but please read it if you have to be on benefits, you need to know.? Change to benefit payday may catch claimants unprepared Posted: 21 January 2009 | Subscribe Online writes Gary Vaux The government is quietly shifting the days that millions of claimants will receive benefits. Gary Vaux looks at the implications Did you know that there was such a word as "periodicity?" I didn't, until I heard about the Department for Work and Pensions' periodicity project. It describes some important changes to the way the DWP pays benefits and allowances. These changes will take place over a two-year period starting on 6 April. The result will be that some claimants may be left for two to three weeks without any benefit income, except for a repayable loan. Article continues below the advertisement The change will affect families and individuals who are receiving income support, incapacity benefits, jobseekers allowance, severe disablement allowance, bereavement benefit or widows benefit. They do not apply to attendance allowance, disability living allowance or carers allowance. Payments in arrears People who now receive their benefit weekly will be paid fortnightly instead. Most importantly, all payments will be in arrears. The day that benefit is paid may also change. From 6 April, Jobcentre Plus will use claimants' national insurance numbers to decide which day to pay. This means that if the national insurance number ends with the final two digits between: ● 00 and 19 they will normally receive their benefits on a Monday. ● 20 to 39 on a Tuesday. ● 40 to 59 on a Wednesday. ● 60 to 79 on a Thursday. ● 80 to 99 on a Friday. Jobcentre Plus will write about these two changes to all claimants affected by them. The combined effect could mean some claimants having a one-off gap of nearly three weeks between benefit payments during the changeover period. The DWP will offer the claimant an interest-free loan while their payments are changing, but these loans will not be provided automatically - the claimant must apply for one. About four weeks before the change, the claimant will receive a letter from Jobcentre Plus, advising them when their benefit payments will change. It will include a loan request, which must be signed and returned. The loan is interest-free and will cover up to 100% of the missing benefit but the claimant will have to re-pay it in six fortnightly payments, by direct deduction from benefit. No awareness campaign The DWP is not planning any publicity or awareness campaign to alert claimants to these changes. Claimants who have deductions from their benefit to cover, for example gas or electricity charges, will have those deductions suspended in the week the payday is changed. Jobcentre Plus will write to all companies on the claimant's behalf. "Simplicity" for the DWP is being achieved at the expense of claimants, who will not gain from being paid two weeks in arrears until they come off benefit. There may be extra pressure on social workers, especially from those who do not pay much attention to the "warning" letter sent four weeks before the changeover. Of course, some claimants will realise that it's better to ask their social worker for a non-recoverable payment under childcare legislation than it is to apply for a repayable payment from the DWP. ● More information about the changes can be found on the Jobcentre Plus website or e-mail the periodicity and payday project team. Different formats of the information will be available from the website by the end of February. Gary Vaux is head of money advice at Hertfordshire Council. Indigola...please note I did not say 'want to' I sais have to, and for your information I like most claimants have paid our dues some members of our families do still pay over the odds and if my son for one was not paying for mp's extra homes and for junkets etc., and numerous other things and was the money he earns my receiving benefits would not only be 8necessary but he would probably be paying for proper treatment from the nhs which is one of the reasons I am unable to do as I want and be out there working instead of in a wheelchair and virtually housebound through medical negligence, sorry to rant but I asked what you thought of the government not the genuine claimants who do appreciate the help but not the way the system is being abused lately by the people who administer it OK!lol. sorry for typos my hands are not so good as they were and i get rattled sometimes and miss keys etc as well.

Resolved Question: A close relative is milking her short-term disability for thousands of dollars...how can it be proven?
(Wed, 25 Feb 2009 07:41:50 GMT)
A close relative of mine went on short-term disability leave back in September right before having early-stage breast cancer surgery and has been receiving short-term disability payments from her employer's insurance company ever since. Following surgery and subsequent radiation (she didn't need chemo), more and more "stuff" started appearing at her house that she'd been buying with the insurance money--new clothes, a new sofa, she's talking about getting a treadmill, etc.--and spending hours online looking up genealogy-related stuff, which is a big hobby of hers. She's also taken a number of trips to see relatives around the state and has gone with them on hobby-oriented excursions for several days at a time (some of the relatives are self-employed while others are retired) and apparently having a grand old time. Meanwhile she's had no medical treatments in nearly two months--she finished radiation in January--but she says she still doesn't feel well enough to go back to work, and oh yeah, she also mentioned out loud on at least one occasion that she's making more money from short-term disability than she does from her job. But she feels really lousy and can't go back to work because she's not ready, yadda yadda yadda, but you wouldn't know it from the way she's been acting and the way she's been spending money on things she doesn't need to live. I'm waiting to hear back from her insurance company on an anonymous call I placed to their fraud hotline, but it got me to wondering...I and many other relatives are seeing her do all of these things, but she's apparently still giving her doctor this line that she's not ready to go back to work, etc., and besides the fact that she's stealing from the system, it's really creating major tensions within the family. So what I'm asking is, once I give the insurance company the details of what I know and what I've observed, how can it be proven that she's milking the system and what can be done to stop her? In the back of my mind I'm thinking it could even get her arrested if this sort of fraud is deemed serious enough, but not having dealt with anything like this before, I'm not sure how this plays out. Anyone have any insight on the process in reporting insurance/disability fraud and how insurance investigators go about proving something like this? I realize people can't give legal advice on here, but I'm just trying to understand how the system works and anything else that might be a consideration. So tell me, Melissa, when did fraud become legal? I'd bring up the fact that it's unethical, too, but you wouldn't understand, obviously... SunAngel, I grew up in the same house as this person and see her several times a week, so I'm a very close relative... Maybe I should send her over to your place to rob you instead, Katherine. Just because she's not robbing me but robbing the system doesn't make it right. In fact, yeah, I'll send her over to your place to steal all your stuff because she's entitled to do so if she wants. Unless of course you believe she shouldn't, but it really doesn't matter what's right or wrong as long as it doesn't affect you, right?

Resolved Question: I'm scared to go to the police about my husband stealing my pain MD'S(his father is a Miami ex-detective)HELP!?
(Sun, 01 Feb 2009 05:34:12 GMT)
I asked the following question before. I got excellent answers, however, many stated I should go to college to find better people. Just to let you know I went to college, I have a graduate degree in Accounting & I still owe $55,000 worth of student loans. I would like to change careers but I'm struggling VERY HARD with my disabilities from my car accident that happened in 2004. I have had 9 operations since & I just came home from the hospital today for the 10th time since. I went because I suffer extremely painful spasms that radiate from my brain stem to the left side of my head. I have Occupital & Trigenimal Neuralgia among other things. If I don't stop the pain the inflamation affects my motor functions & if left untreated I will have permanent brain damage. The car accident was not my fault. The person who caused this 3 car pile up on I-95 (where I was the middle car that landed on the car in front of me and then my car fell backwards) was obligated to pay me via their insurance paid their policy limit which was $100,000 within months of the accident. This just barely covered my hospital bill. My Lexus was totaled. I'm in serious debt from this accident & had to take a huge cut in pay because I physically can't handle what I used to before the accident. My employer said I'm not the same person because of all the mistakes I make (which I never did before the accident). My employer is right (acknowledged by all my doctors), thus, I also have been told by all my doctors to go on disability. I'm working on getting partial disability mainly for protection against discrimination for my current medical condition. I'm allowed to work while partial disability, The limited income threshold from receiving partial disability will help supplement from what I'm making now. As far as religious groups. I have tried but it's hard to be around people when you don't want to feel like a burden because of my ongoing medical problems. Also, the only sibling I had died in the auto accident & my parents can't handle anymore stress so sharing this problem with them would be too overwhelming for them. I know this because I have hinted enough to see what their reaction would be. Finally, I'm 37 with a 15 yr old daughter who's staying with my parents for the first time in her life while I stay close to Nova University to be a guinea pig to receive any treatment available since their a "teaching hospital" in medicine who works closely with John Hopkins. Anyways, with that said, here is my question that I posted several weeks ago. Sorry for the lengthiness. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm scared to go to the police about my husband stealing my pain meds(his father is a Miami ex-detective)HELP!? I asked this question before but apparently did not provide enough information. I do not want to snitch on my husband. I have tried to hide the medication but he gets extremely angry (but does not hit me). However, I have been a victim of domestic violence before (where my ex-husband tried to kill my family & stabbed me with a knife) so I don't know if I'm extra fearful about confronting him and/or putting my foot down; I was in counseling (as well as my family) for that for 5 years before I met my new husband who is well aware of my past. I have tried to talk to his family who not only is in denial or "tired of dealing with the problem" as they put it as long as he acts "productive" to them that's all they care about. Plus, he's a "momma's boy" so it's like he can do no wrong. The only time that I know (I suspect there were more now) that he was "busted" by them for abusing pain medication he said the pain medication was mine. However, this pain medication was something he bought online & took a much hire dose in a short period of time & when he ran out of those he vomited so much (as well as experiencing other symptoms) for 4 days before being forced to go to the hospital via ambulance (in front of his parents) & when he got there he was so dehydrated (he couldn't hold even Gatorade) that when his toxicology screen came back for opiates he was "clean." He was honest to the drs at the hospital about his opium use & that's why they suggested he see a GI doctor because his intestinal tract was in such bad shape due to ulcers from the pain med. However, since he also had food poisoning (as well as I but did not suffer because as much because I had a better GI tract) and was given antibiotics his originally suspicious parents believed that it was just food poisoning & that this non-prescribed stash was mine, which has now ruined my relationship with my in-laws even though I told them to blood test me anytime & even offer me a lie detector test. I only take my pain medication when I have spasm from MS, and now occipital & trigenimal neuralgia that I was diagnosed with after a severe 2004 auto accident for which I have had already 9 operations. I never have dealt with someone with substance abuse but due to

Resolved Question: Is it fair to charge my child chores and room and board?
(Tue, 30 Dec 2008 02:30:26 GMT)
I am having a disagreement with my daughter. She boarded at school last year which left me with a $27,000 debt. She flunked out - didn't even earn one credit for all that money . Is living at home this year going to school online and working full time . I have asked her to do one small chore a day and pay $200 a month board. I even give her back $50 back as a bribe if she doesn't overdraft her checking account( which she was doing excessively paying the fees) so actually ends up $150 a month. In return I pay all her bills including car insurance ,cell phone, tuition, books - all much more than the $200 a month yet she complains and fights with me and says is unfair. Seems more than fair to me when alternative is to give her all her bills. I am now on disability and barely making ends meet - yet she somehow thinks I should cover all her bills without help while she keeps all her pay as play money and leaves the house a mess - not helping around the home at all. I am tired of fighting with her and having her so unhappy. Like other's opinions. Am I wrong to think she should help at the age of 20 working full time with a disabled parent? She actually had the nerve to tell me today that I sit on couch and get my money and she works for hers so she wants to keep it. I was crushed at work in an accident last year and am still recovering hoping to go back to work - trying to survive on 60 percent of my salary . Thanks for your input. Thanks to all for responses so far. Good to read that I am not off base as she makes me feel I am at times. I don't know where I lost authority over her. Have told her if this was a job she'd have been fired long ago. She says I don't appreciate her or love her but is other way around. I have told her if she doesn't like the arrangement she can move out and although I would hate to do it - may have to force her to for her own good Thanks again to all

Resolved Question: How would I go about obtaining info on disability insurance due to pregnancy and childbirth?
(Mon, 22 Dec 2008 23:37:00 GMT)
I live in GA and I am the only source of income for my family of three (about to be four) I am eight months pregnant and I do not qualify for FMLA or any type of paid maternity leave through my work. I talked to the Department of labor today and they said that since I will be unable to work then I do not qualify for unemployment insurance. A friend suggested that I may qualify for some type of short-term or temporary disability assistance, but I haven't had any luck through online searches and I do not know what agency I would even ask about something like that. Can anyone help me? I only worried about maintaining some type of income in the weeks it takes me to recover from childbirth, I do not consider children a disability. This is my second.

Voting Question: SSDI Award and Unemployment Benefits Question?
(Sat, 13 Dec 2008 19:50:26 GMT)
I am 59 yr old and have been a primary caregiver for 15 years now. My last patient died in April at which time I applied for unemployment insurance. After having only collected this for a couple of checks my Doctor put me on State Disability due to arthritis problems in my hands and needing surgeries. As time went on I was made to sign up with the Dept of Rehab who in turn made me file for SSI and SDI because it was going to go on longer than the year State Disability would pay. Again as time goes by I was denied my SSI because State paid to much which was expected. Now, on the first of the month State Disability discontinued me 5 months earlier than thought. At the same time I received an award letter for SS DI for a very small monthly amount. When I called and told them That State has been discontinued they kicked in the SDI both totaling 870 a month. anyway I had already reapplied for the rest of my unemployment online which pays twice the amount for the next 5 months anyway it would give me a few months to prepare for such a larger reduction in income. Questions is how do I put SSI on the back burner for this time and can I even do this and still collect it when then times comes and can I continue to receive SDI during this period. Anyone?????? druski I understand the consept of not being able to claim both.. I was recieving unemployment benefits until State Disability kicked in. This I along with millions of people have worked hard to earn.. not a gift or hand down. I need a couple of months to be able to take the half cut in income they are giving to me and just wanted to know if the money we all work hard to earn is able to be collected and SSI put on the back burner until unemployment runs out and if so do disability payment continue which also we all pay into all of our lives and is based on what we have earned all of our lives. Resolved Question: What tax forms do I need to receive before I can file federal taxes?
(Mon, 27 Oct 2008 16:40:47 GMT)
I know it is early, I am just planning ahead. I know I will have to wait for W-2s, but I'm not sure what else. Here's what is going on: I have started school with student loans and receiving GI Bill Spouse is in school with no student loans and receiving GI Bill Spouse is contributing to a retirement plan (not 401k) Spouse has life insurance from employer. Spouse has health insurance for our entire family through employer. Spouse has FlexPay card through employer Spouse is receiving disability from government for injuries sustained while serving in Iraq I think that is it. I am not sure what we will get forms for and what we will not. Will he recieve some kind of form for his disability even though it is not taxed (am I right that it is not taxed?). Will either I or my spouse receive something from our schools for tuition expenses? What about interest on my student loans? Will we recieve anything for the GI Bill we receive even though it is not taxable (am I right on that one as well?. Will the contributions to my spouse's retirement plan show up on the W-2 or is that separate? Will we receive anything for the FlexPay card (that is a card that we decide how much money to put on it and pay it off in equal installments through automatic deductions from my spouse's paycheck. The money can only be used for medical related expenses and this program is only offered through the employer and is a federal program [if I am not mistaken]). We usually do our taxes online, so I like to know what I need to have before we can file. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much in advance!

Resolved Question: I live in Stark County Ohio and my parents are kicking me out, I have no way to fend for myself.?
(Thu, 25 Sep 2008 02:50:28 GMT)
I live in Stark County Ohio and was recently in a car accident. I was injured pretty severely, but unfortunately I don't think I can collect disability because I will be able to work within a year. My parents are threatening to kick me out, drop me from their health insurance which I am in dire need of, they told me to drop out of school. They say I'm a "miserable hurtful" human being who constantly tries to hurt people's feelings. When in actuality I'm a 21 year old female with bipolar mania, a shattered thigh bone, a shattered elbow, and I have no use of my dominant hand and won't for a possible year due to radial nerve palsy. I'm currently taking online courses to maintain full time status to keep my insurance, but if they drop me I'm screwed. I have no kids, no car, and am unable to work. What can/could/should i do? OK some of you ppl obviously didnt read the question correctly. Ive been employed since I was 14, have never asked for money from them and have never accepted it. Second of all I cant STAND UP and I have to type one handed and you cant read my writing. I could be a greeter at walmart BUT have no ride. IM COMPLETELY IMMOBILE!! and another thing, ive never gone off of my bipolar meds. my condtion is under control with meds, but i need insurance to pay for them, one is 300 a month without insurance.

Resolved Question: what happens if my parents were to die? debts&disability?
(Mon, 01 Sep 2008 07:50:20 GMT)
I am a 35 year old disabled man living with my parents. I currently live from SSI check every month, but i'm worried about my parents debts after they die. I have heard that the debts get attached to their estate, and they are leaving me 2 houses and a condo. I have spoken to my father about them getting a special needs trust for me, he was reluctant, eventually said he would make his own special needs trust, and seems to have never done that. Being disabled I worry about my future very much. After having researched that under a special needs trust a disabled person cannot draw from the trust monthly to pay for living needs, well, seeing how little i receive, and how expensive the cost of living in a house is, i realized that I'd have to live in one property from the income of the other two. mowing the lawn is $100 a month. telephone, electricity, food, and home owner fees, water, trash pickup, those things add up to quite a bit, and i'm thinking $620 wont cover all of those things. so if i can't draw past $620 i'd need to try and live from their remaining estates. the worst part of the situation, there is no full time rental security, and getting a realtor costs money, taking away the first months rent from your renters. I have some very expensive medical bills too, so a big loss of losing SSI would be not just not being able to live, but losing my doctor visits, and my medication. I know that my father has life insurance, and my mom has explained that would be used to pay their debts and funeral, i'm just not entirely sure that life insurance will cover their debts, and seeing as their properties will be the very force that keep me breathing on earth, its very important for me to figure this out before anything happens, so if i must do something to not be in a really awful situation now, then i must do it -- somehow. (somehow being the operative word. my disabiltiy doesn't allow me to work, else I would) I am concerned about their debts, not wanting their creditors to take away what they leave me after they die, or perhaps whether a special needs trust is the best thing to do, because i have heard of horror stories where if you draw a little bit every month to pay for living expenses, *even* if that amount is not a whole lot, it can keep you from being able to receive SSI. I was hoping those of you who had knowledge of these types of situation would advise me as to the best course of action. Again, my father took it upon himself to say he'd make his own special needs trust, somehow not liking the prospect of dealing with a lawyer, and not only has he not done it or mentioned it, my research online seems to indicate you must have a lawyer. appreciate any help here. I receieve a very good reply from Chiliswoman. i've come to the realization that i might have to live off the income of two properties, being disabled, and i know that my parents haven't died yet, however i feel this is very much something that ought to be figured out beforehand. the two properies bring in both $1500 a month. that has to pay for living expenses, doctors, and medication as well as maintain a vehicle because there is no bus transportation here. this is a very frightening thing to have to think about. i wish there was someway my dad could create a -proper- special needs trust on his own, with the correct wording, because if he does go through with it, that'll be the way he wants to do it. and i know he'll get it wrong too, so i'm not sure what to do.

Resolved Question: Help with back pain, cortisone shots/surgery/physical therapy..ect.?
(Thu, 01 May 2008 18:33:21 GMT)
I was diagnosed with a disk protrusion two years ago (L-1/L-2 vertebra). Since then I’ve had two cortisone injections, physical therapy and a diskectomy (sp??) where the Dr. surgically trimmed off the portion of the disk that was protruding. It did feel better for about a month but started hurting again. Since then I’ve had another MRI which showed that the disk has collapsed, another cortisone injection and no relief. It has actually gotten worse since the last cortisone injection to the point that I have a hard time walking, can’t sit for more than 30-45 minutes, can’t pick up my daughters, and now have a sharp pain running down my right side when I stride out while walking. I’ve spoke to my Dr. about a Tens Unit and will be getting one shortly, he has also recommended two more cortisone injections (a week apart), and we have ruled out physical therapy as it seemed to have little to no effect. Now for my questions: 1.Would it be worthwhile having two more injections? The last one did help relieve the pain but it only lasted about a week at best, and the pain is much worse now than before. 2.I am thinking about filing for disability, it’s been two years since I was able to work (5years as a Paramedic, Two years as a Lab Specialist), as I can’t perform my required duties because of the pain. I’ve been told that it’s very hard to get any type of disability for back pain, is this true (I have MRIs that show the damage, along with medical records for the treatments and medical visits)? 3.I am also thinking of trying to file for a handicap sticker until I get either the problem fixed or the pain managed (I am now having a hard time just walking thru the local Wal-Mart parking lot these days!!). I am in Texas and can’t find any info online with the state giving the requirements and guidelines for handicap stickers. 4.Are there any other ideas that one might have that cold help with the back and pain issues? I really don’t want another surgery if I can avoid it, I’ve also found that soaking in a hot-tub helps more than anything but that just isn’t an option financially and I don’t think that my insurance (while very good (Tri-Care, military) would be willing to shell out the cash for a hot-tub to make my back feel better!! I love em, but I don’t think they love me as much to be willing to do that!! I’ve tried cortisone shots, physical therapy, surgery, soaking in hot water, using one of those bath spas, resting, exercising, prayer, chiropractor, massage therapy, dancing in the rain.. You name it I’ve tried it!!!! I’m hoping maybe someone might have other ideas.. Any help on any of these questions would be most appreciated. Thanks for your time and help.

Resolved Question: How can I locate a professional to provide a medical disability assessment for an insurance settlement?
(Thu, 27 Mar 2008 22:33:21 GMT)
I need to find an independent, qualified person/service to provide expert testimony for an insurance settlement case. Specifically, to provide an assessment of the nature, extent, and prognosis of injuries I sustained in an auto accident - with the possibility of using this information if the case goes to court. I have looked online for "disability assessments", "disability profiles", etc., but am not finding anything in my local area (Portland, Oregon). Any suggestions?

Resolved Question: for those of you who think Obama has accomplish nothing?
(Fri, 15 Feb 2008 05:58:50 GMT)
Obama passed legislation with Republican Senator Jim Talent to give gas stations a tax credit for installing E85 ethanol refueling pumps. The tax credit covers 30 percent of the costs of switching one or more traditional petroleum pumps to E85, which is an 85 percent ethanol/15 percent gasoline blend. -After a number of inmates on death row were found innocent, Senator Obama worked with law enforcement officials to require the videotaping of interrogations and confessions in all capital cases. -His first law was passed with Republican Tom Coburn, a measure to rebuild trust in government by allowing every American to go online and see how and where every dime of their tax dollars is spent. -Obama created the Illinois Earned Income Tax Credit for low-income working families in 2000 and successfully sponsored a measure to make the credit permanent in 2003. The law offered about $105 million in tax relief over three years. -Obama joined forces with former U.S. Sen. Paul Simon (D-IL) to pass the toughest campaign finance law in Illinois history. The legislation banned the personal use of campaign money by Illinois legislators and banned gifts from lobbyists. Before the law was passed, one organization ranked Illinois worst among 50 states for its campaign finance regulations. -As a member of the Veterans' Affairs Committee, Senator Obama has fought to help Illinois veterans get the disability pay they were promised, while working to prepare the VA for the return of the thousands of veterans who will need care after Iraq and Afghanistan. -He traveled to Russia with Republican Dick Lugar to begin a new generation of non-proliferation efforts designed to find and secure deadly weapons around the world. -Obama has been a leading advocate for protecting the right to vote, helping to reauthorize the Voting Rights Act and leading the opposition against discriminatory barriers to voting. - In the U.S. Senate, Obama introduced the STOP FRAUD Act to increase penalties for mortgage fraud and provide more protections for low-income homebuyers, well before the current subprime crisis began. -Obama sponsored legislation to combat predatory payday loans, and he also was credited with lobbied the state to more closely regulate some of the most egregious predatory lending practices. -Barack Obama introduced the Patriot Employer Act of 2007 to provide a tax credit to companies that maintain or increase the number of full-time workers in America relative to those outside the US; maintain their corporate headquarters in America; pay decent wages; prepare workers for retirement; provide health insurance; and support employees who serve in the military. -Obama worked to pass a number of laws in Illinois and Washington to improve the health of women. His accomplishments include creating a task force on cervical cancer, providing greater access to breast and cervical cancer screenings, and helping improve prenatal and premature birth services. -Obama has introduced and helped pass bipartisan legislation to limit the abuse of no-bid federal contracts. -Obama and Senator Feingold (D-WI) took on both parties and proposed ethics legislation that was described as the "gold standard" for reform. It was because of their leadership that ending subsidized corporate jet travel, mandating disclosure of lobbyists' bundling of contributions, and enacting strong new restrictions of lobbyist-sponsored trips became part of the final ethics bill that was signed into law. I really could list many, many more but I fear it would be too much to take in at one time. I hope this helps some of you know him a little better. Everyone seems to be jumping on his "Change" bandwagon. However, he does have the record to back it up. haha..i know jonathan..just spreading the message..u know

Resolved Question: I don't understand Family Doctors and Medical Records.?
(Thu, 14 Feb 2008 02:02:37 GMT)
I'm on disability (car accident). If I need blood work, I just call, ask if they take my insurance, and schedule to come in. Same thing with foot doctors, etc. I don't understand what I need a Family Doctor for. They seem incapable of making as good as references as if I had looked up the information in a phone book or online. The disability office requires that I submit medical records of all surgeries and doctor visits since my injuries for claims. I don't have that information at this time. Do I ask my Family Doctor to get them.... and will he keep them on file for as long as he is my family doctor? Because if that is the case, that would be very convenient. If not, and he is only there for references and approvals, that is lame and useless.

Resolved Question: Where do I find free information on frugal living or penny pinching?
(Wed, 23 Jan 2008 01:39:59 GMT)
I have been out from my job on disability since September 07. I received a letter today that said I was terminated for not returning to work. I can live without the paycheck but not the insurance. My husband makes too much for me to get assistance even though I am permanently disabled. So the thing is that I can get Cobra to cover me but it will be $400 a month that I don't have now that I don't have a job. I have been searching online trying to find ways to save money so that my family doesn't suffer. I know I can save $400 a month but I don't know where to start. I have heard about frugal living and stuff but I keep being asked to "PAY" to get the information. Anyone know where there might be free info? Any tricks or tips? Thanks

Resolved Question: Is with-holding PTO hours at work legal?
(Thu, 30 Aug 2007 01:42:16 GMT)
I have accrued "paid time off" hours at work (for vacation, sick pay, holidays, whatever). I have been saving them for my honeymoon, and now the boss is telling me I can have the days off, but not use the PTO time to get paid for the days I'll be gone. I was depending on that money to help with the bills and expenses. Is it legal for him to tell me I can't use the hours? Everything I've found online says the hours are for me to use at my discretion, yet he's telling me no. He says he wants us to have at least 120 hours at all times in case we get sick or something. I thought that is what I had short term disability, hospital, and accident insurance for. What can I do to get my hours? I only have 2 weeks. Thanks.

Resolved Question: Ballpark estimate of disability insurance premiums?
(Tue, 01 May 2007 14:04:23 GMT)
My husband's employer does not offer disability insurance and we are looking at getting a simple disability plan from our private insurer State Farm. I would just like to know roughly how much premiums are for this kind of dis. insurance. I've looked online, but you have to enter all kinds of personal information before any company (whether insurance or quote finder) will send you any info. Seems like putting a big sign on my email and screaming "SPAM ME!" So just curious what other people pay for this. My husband is 28, non-smoking, not overweight, and is healthy. He's a high school teacher.

Resolved Question: What type of lawyer is needed to fight my private disability insurance company?
(Sun, 18 Feb 2007 23:06:34 GMT)
What kind of lawyer should I look for to assist me with a devious disability insurance company? I want to stop them from harrassing, aggravating, and interferring with my recovery. I've paid into this long-term disabilty policy for years, but now that I'm recovering from severe depression, I've had nothing but trouble from these people. Plus, after putting my through months of hell, now they want me to go to their doctor for a second opinion...is this legal? They've done alot of under-handed and shifty crap regarding my claim, but I just don't have the energy or strength to fight them alone while I'm trying to recover. Is there any place online that I can go to research this kinda of stuff? Please help....I'm at my last straw.

On top of that I'm 100% sure I have bipolar disorder and am trying to find a way to be diagnosed & treated but w/o insurance it's a long process. I need to get on disability so I can survive while picking up the pieces of my life if that's possible.

Resolved Question: I need help in making Health Insurance decisions.... let me explain:?
(Thu, 09 Nov 2006 16:15:04 GMT)
My husband and I are both disabled. We both receive Medicare Parts A & B. Husband took disability retirement 8 years ago from the VA (Federal Government), and through them, we pay a monthly premium for Aetna health insurance, which helps to cover my expensive prescriptions. We thought that Aetna would pick up the leftover costs of whatever Medicare did not cover. WRONG. The Aetna policy we have is not a Medicare Supplement plan; just a plain vanilla healthcare HMO. I've been trying to do some research, but it is driving me crazy trying to decipher what the Federal Government offers its disability-retirement employees versus what Medicare offers, including its Plan D for prescriptions. I've already used some of the online decision-making tools, but I'm still not getting a clear picture of what's out there and how we would save any $$.There are seminars all over the county put on by local BC/BS Medicare Advantage plans, but they are all trying to sell something.Whom can I trust to help?
