I am a single mom with 2 kids; the youngest is disabled. In my divorce, my ex agreed to pay the mortgage instead of child support. He lost his job almost 2 years ago and couldn't pay the mortgage any longer. My children receive Medicaid due to my income status and my son's disability. I took my ex to court to get child support a year ago since he wasn't paying the mor

Another exercise in extremism. That’s our take on the new party platform adopted by Texas Republicans at their state convention on June 12 in Dallas. See our analysis of the platform here. The full platform is here. Among the planks:
* Separation of church and state is a myth.
* Teach junk science in public schools.
* Give politicians on State Board of Education — instead of teachers and scholars — even more power to decide what students should learn. (And give the SBOE authority

Resolved Question: Why do people think unemployment is welfare?
(Wed, 09 Jun 2010 10:40:02 GMT)
Extensions aside, lets just discuss the 26 weeks of state unemployment. Your employer pays premiums into an insurance fund. Laws of economics say that this is money you would otherwise have on your paycheck. The state banks these premiums the same as an insurance company would. If you are unemployed you get biweekly checks the same as you would with, say, private disability insurance. So when has insurance become welfare? It's not even income redistribution on the state level. You had t

Resolved Question: just something i found on the web?
(Sat, 17 Apr 2010 21:14:42 GMT)
The US Military has a “you break it, you buy it” philosophy when it comes to troops getting injured in the line of duty — namely, if you become disabled while serving your country, the US Government just “bought” whatever you injured as is responsible for providing you medical care (at the Government’s expense) for that disability.
Never before has a politician suggested that men and women wounded in the defense of their nation should actually be responsible for paying for their own treatment

Resolved Question: Are there advocates or agencies who assist a clmt in the repaying overpayment of private disability benefits?
(Tue, 22 Dec 2009 21:44:28 GMT)
I worked for The Hartford Insurance company when I became totally impaired. Although I signed a Authorization form for them to communicate with Social Security, they now indicate I have been overpaid $40,000 and must repay it. I believe at least 1/2 of the liability is theirs as the dropped the ball by letting my claim sit for 2 years and then suddenly writing that I owe them this large sum of money. I live on a fixed income as they have already, without notice, lowered my payment by $1000.
