Resolved Question: I am thinking of entering the nfl next year and thinking of buying life insurance?
(Fri, 19 Feb 2010 03:12:59 GMT)
I am thinking about going into the nfl next year, does it matter when I buy life insurance. Also term versus whole and what about disability. To rates increase since I am a professional athlete. Does it matter if I buy it before I am technically a pro athlete? Supposed to be a 5th rounder, making about 700k my first year I have friends that work with northwestern mutual and was curious if they would be able to help me out?

Resolved Question: Mother in law getting married too fast...?
(Fri, 12 Feb 2010 23:38:35 GMT)
I asked this earlier, and really got no good advice. So I will make the story shorter. Long story short, my MIL is getting married in less than a month to a guy she just met in November. My husband has met him, guy is a jerk, won't work, and just dumped my mother in law during the entire month of December to be with his 2nd ex-wife. My MIL is completely desperate to have a man in her life, and almost did this 2 years ago (with another guy). Luckily, the guy left her for another woman and it didn't happen. It seems these men use her to make their ex-wives jealous, and she can't see that. How can my husband talk to her about it? He doens't want to tell her what to do, and isn't judging her...there is just alot of stuff she won't ask men that is important to a marriage. She says things like what kind of debt, if any, the guy has, life insurance, where they will live, what his kids are like (he has 6 grown children and 14 great-grandchildren) are none of her business...?? We've been asking her questions that you typically ask someone close to you getting married, and she has no idea. All she knows is that he's been married 2x, that he's on disability, and goes to the same church as her. This has barely a 25% chance of this working, and she already is pressed for money. I'd just hate to see her marry this guy out of desperation, get used, and then have to pay money for a divorce and whatever else my happen during the marriage. My sister in law has already tried to talk to her, but she says that her kids just don't want her to be happy and that she deserves this. She's hasn't been a bad mother to my husband and sis-in-law, but she certainly hasn't been the greatest. Ever since she divorced their dad, she will "abandon" them as in not returning their calls, never coming to visit, going on long trips with the guys, etc. and ignoring her kids. Their dad died last year, and I think that they are hurt by their only real family. Should we just not say anything, perhaps let her marry the guy and learn her lesson the hard way, or should he sit down and say hey, I really think you should get to know this guy better...what's the rush? I'd really like some advice from someone who has perhaps experienced this. And, before you say it's none of my business, it is when it comes to holidays and family events, and my husband and his sister are devastated because his mom won't come around when she's with a guy. And, to be quite honest, he has a career and I'm in a professional school, and I'm not inviting random guys to holidays at my (most likely very nice) house someday to avoid making her mad. I mean, this is the kind of stuff that makes shows like forensic files, etc. Garnet, your answer really isn't answering the question as to how we should VOICE our opinion. She allowed my husbands father to beat both children, broke bones and all for their entire lives, because she is selfish and didn't want to "not have a man". When he started bringing other women to their house...then she had no other choice. Anyway, she is all they have, and after their crappy life of being put thru being around one horrible man, she continues to do so and it hurts them...because like I said...she is their mother and although she has given them a crappy life, she is the only family they have. And no, I never ignored my parents advice. I heeded it. Obviously you are a bitter old lady just like my MIL. We are trying to help and trying to find the best way to go about it....that's all. NOT tell her what to do.

Resolved Question: Am I responsible to pay erroneuosly recieved disability payments from Socail Security?
(Fri, 29 Jan 2010 16:33:48 GMT)
OK further on. I was on disability for a number of years due to on going health issues with my blood and my legs. I am no longer and have not received any benefit payments for over 2 years. I received a letter from Social Security stating that I had "erroneously" received payments from 2003 to 2007. With this they are saying I need to pay it back. The reason I was on disability is that I have been dealing with venal stasis ulcers for more than 25 years. I have had deep venal thrombosis in both legs and experienced a pulmonary embolism, major, in my right lung. Due to the thick blood it causes extreme swelling in my legs. This is ongoing even though I have chosen to return to the work force. My question is this: Can they take legal action, such as the US Marshal's coming in and taking all of our belongings to sell at an auction? This is something they do with the IRS at times. We do not have the money nor do I anticipate a way to get it. The money is gone as it is what we lived on and without the Medicare insurance I would never have received the care I needed in order to be where I am now. My disability was not physically noticeable, unless I wear shorts, so it is not a back injury nor a neck injury or anything else which hampers mobility. I simply can not remain on my feet for extended periods of time, nor can I remain seated either. I must sit with my feet elevated above my heart for at least 15 minutes every hour. Try explaining that to an employer. Any professional legal advice would be appreciated, with case supporting information of rulings. Thank you.

Resolved Question: Why the rush for a healthcare plan..?
(Wed, 18 Nov 2009 01:16:17 GMT)
I'm just curious about this sudden rush for this something, anything..after all these years. The Obama administration wants to take billions of dollars out of the Medicare program -from seniors & those w/disabilities- in order to finance this; Secondly, they want to cut the payments to Medicare doctors & specialist who treat them -the result of that will surely be that more of these fine professionals will simply cease taking Medicare patients altogether. Thirdly, a government system will put all or most insurance companies out of business. Fourthly, whatever happened to government setting price controls on Pharmaceuticals so that Americans don't have to pay the highest price in the world for their drugs? It is a fact that we pay more for them than ANY other country in the world for drugs -what happened? What happened is that the Obama admin made 'a deal' w/the Pharmaceutical Industry so that they would 'embrace' their healthcare plan -no matter what, in exchange for the government not asking to bargain for lower prices. There are many Americans perhaps 10yrs or more so before retirement losing their jobs, or simply not being hired because there are younger people willing to work for a lot less -where do these people go for healthcare? I think it's far better for the government to work in INCREMENTAL stages for a healthcare system, seeking a broad consensus for the nation -not a few ultra-Liberal political hacks & some of their looniest ideas brought to fruition, at the taxpayer's expense. As well, I think everyone surely knows that a National Healthcare Systerm will assure illegal-aliens, people who don't belong here in the first place -a new program to leach off of- costing the taxpayer even more as their numbers keep exploding -if denied it, they will take it to the courts & it will be tied up in legal battle for years. These are all good reason against a government-run healtplan & NOT to rush anything into place; YES we need healthcare reform, I disagree that we need a government-run system for EVERYBODY. 'Sweet Emotion' -I think it's quite obvious that you don't know what you're talking about -but that wouldn't be a first for a Liberal..

Resolved Question: I'm 46, disabled, no College degree, what to do?
(Thu, 08 Oct 2009 21:10:30 GMT)
I'm a 46 year old guy, disabled in a motorcycle crash three years ago. My residual disability is a leg that is mostly metal and still hurts, every single day - bone pain, nerve pain, muscle pain, plus pain in other joints from not walking properly. My kid is in Elementary school, my wife is 38, and I feel like a washed up mess. I've thought about vocational rehab to learn a new career (can't do my old line of work because it has a physical component that I can no longer meet) - my old career was extremely lucrative, and in order to replace that income, I am going to need to get (at least) a Bachelors degree, as well as some training in a new career, but I have no clue where to start, and my messed up State has very weak support in the area of vocational rehab for injured workers - they just clean 'em up and park 'em in the front of the local Walmarts as Greeters - and that is not a future of which I want any part. Do any of you disabled people out there have experience with getting an insurance company to send you back to college/professional school/Graduate school? And if so, what the hell do I do? No jokes, please - I am entirely serious. Thanks in advance!

Resolved Question: Was this emotional abuse?
(Tue, 22 Sep 2009 05:52:12 GMT)
Yes, I know I need to seek more professional help with this issue, but I'd really like some quick input to begin with. I've been having horrible relationship problems, and it's just really hit me that I may be the victim of emotional abuse and neglect as a child...my mother chooses to devote her attention to loser men, while mostly ignoring/neglecting me. My mom isn't a terrible person. For most of my life, I've had to deal with her choosing some of the worst of men (alcoholics, high school dropouts, ignorant, unemployed and refusing to be employed, verbally abusive, etc.). My current stepdad is all of the above, and he's essentially a dependent of my mom (though he has no disability other than being a good for nothing deadbeat...though to hear him talk in his loud, boisterous, obnoxious voice, he's king of the world). After more than a few years of just doing odd jobs, while she provided him with a home, money, medical insurance, etc., he’s only now agreed to go to a community college and take a course in being a taxi driver. A major part of this problem is that, while catering to these men, following them around like a puppy, so eager to help, she generally criticizes me, ignores me, corrects me, doesn’t divulge much about herself and questions every single last detail of my life. As a child, I was so terrified and miserable, as my now step dad was so mean and threatening to me all the time. Despite all I'd suffered, she even married my stepfather while I was at college, and never even told me...one day when I happened to call home, he answered and, gloating, filled me in on the news. If I call her for something, she’ll sometimes ignore me and respond later, but she always makes sure to answer when my stepdad calls. When I have good news, she answers with the same, generic, “Oh, that’s great!” She's also made the statement that, unlike what other parents often tell their children, there’s no such thing as my being too good for just any man. She almost seems to encourage the mistakes I make in my life, and embraced my previous boyfriends who I (later, of course) and any other friend acknowledged as a complete loser. She's always made sure that all my material wants are met, and she claims to love me, but emotionally, I've always felt a bit empty and envious while she lavished most of her attention, personality and concern on these horrid men...my own relationships have definitely suffered, and I’m generally a flipping emotional wreck most of the time. It was recently her birthday, and while I tried to give her the best gifts I could, he, as usual, got her nothing. What was worse was how, while she smiled and thanked me for my gifts, she said gifts weren't really important to her, and she wasn't that kind of person – as if my efforts were nice, but unnecessary. I've done all I can to prove to her that I'm worthy of her attention, but she just doesn't seem to see it. What is the issue here...I know none of this bs is my fault, as it began when I was a very small child? Any ideas what her problem is (I suspect my grandfather was very controlling when she was young)? Thanks so much for any input (other than to run far, far away, screaming, with my arms flailing all about)!

Resolved Question: How do you tell if you have a learning disability, I feel like I could have one.?
(Thu, 27 Aug 2009 15:42:00 GMT)
I struggle a lot in school. I overall just feel stupid. Im in 11th grade. In fifth grade i was tested a my school for learning disabilities. My teacher thought I had dyslexia. But no results ever came and my parents wanted to take me to professional and get tested but they never looked into it and if there insurance covers in. The symptoms I have are. - trouble writing and copying from a board. -trouble focusing - I struggle a lot in math I cannot do word problems at all. -I am better at oral test compared to written - I daydream and zone out a lot - I get headaches when I read - I mix up letters and numbers - I reverse or turn letters and numbers - I have a very low reading comprehension - i have problems putting my thoughts into words - I am very distracted b every little sound - I have a very poor memory with facts and stuff from school - I am very quiet in class because i do not want to ask a question or say something and sound stupid. This past year i had chemistry and i struggled in the class. i stayed after near the end of the year to get help with the final and my teacher asked me if i had dyslexia because he had noticed it all year! I try to hide it because i feel embarrassed. Does it sound like I have dyslexia or another learning disability? And how do I go to my parents and asked them to get me tested? Should i tell my teachers at the beginning of the year instead of struggling the whole year?

Resolved Question: California disability insurance SDI and tax return?
(Thu, 20 Aug 2009 17:58:30 GMT)
I wonder if California's EDD would check my tax return to confirm that during the time of disability, I didn't receive any other income? The reason I am asking is that because I would like to claim as "real estate professional" on the tax return as I had spent quite a bit of time on it, however, I am not sure if EDD would have problem with it. They would say since you are disabled, you can't be performing any tasks, while the reality is that my disability disallow me to perform my usual occupation as an engineer but I am still ok to do real estate activities. any ideas?

Resolved Question: DLA AND CARE COMPONENT TO BE AXED WHAT DO YOU THINK AND WHAT OF THE ELDERLY AND SICK?
(Wed, 05 Aug 2009 09:08:21 GMT)
DLA threat and AA threat What exactly is the Green Paper about? The green paper is about the problem of paying for care as the UK’s population ages. It proposes setting up a National Care Service, like the National Health Service, to provide a universal system of care throughout the UK. Much of the document is devoted to discussing how to pay for this service, including: making everyone pay a flat rate of £25,000 before or after they die, whether they ever need care or not; or making everyone over retirement age pay into an insurance scheme; or making people pay for part of their care depending on their means. This is in addition to the proposal to take disability benefits off claimants and hand them over to the care service. The National Care Service would only deal with your care needs. If you had to go into residential care you would still have to pay for accommodation, heating, lighting, food, clothes, toiletries, etc. But at least under this system everyone would have the right to the care they need, even though it might mean getting rid of disability benefits, right? No, not at all. Everyone would have the right to have their care needs assessed but only the most severely disabled would actually receive any care. The way it would work is that under the National Care Service everyone in the UK would have their care needs assessed using the same criteria wherever they live. This might be done by a national body – it’s easy to imagine a company like Atos who currently do benefits medicals being employed to do the assessments – or it might be done by local social services departments all working to the same system. As a result of the assessment, some people would be awarded a ‘personal budget’ – a cash amount that could be used to meet their needs. Many people, however, would receive no care whatsoever, because their care needs would be below the threshold set nationally or by individual local authorities. For example you might be assessed as needing help with washing, dressing and undressing because of arthritis. But you’d be very unlikely to actually get this help from the National Care Service. Resources would be reserved for those with higher needs than yours. One of the concerns of disability agencies, including RNIB, is that many people who are currently entitled to DLA or AA would not be entitled to a personal budget from the National Care Service. At the moment, most local authorities do not currently provide help for people who ‘only’ need help with washing and dressing. Still, those with the highest care needs would be able to purchase whatever they wanted with their personal budget, wouldn’t they? No, not at all. How the budget would be spent would depend on what agreement individuals were able to reach with a social worker. If you have ME/CFS, for example, you may rely on your DLA or AA to pay for alternative therapies such as acupuncture, homeopathy, herbalism or chiropractice or you may use it to pay for dietary supplements that you know help you. However, professionals may dismiss these as quack remedies and you may not be able to use your personal budget for those sort of things. It wouldn’t be your cash to spend as you choose, in the way that DLA and AA are. Won’t there be some sort of transitional relief for current claimants? Yes, there may be. But you might not like it. One proposal is to ensure that all current claimants get a care package of at least the value of their current disability benefits payments. But the amounts paid for DLA and AA wouldn’t get you very much care. Middle rate care DLA and lower rate AA are worth £47.10 a week, for example. This might get you help with washing and dressing in the morning and getting into bed at night for two, or at the most three days a week. The other four or five days you’d have to manage alone. If your care needs are at night, your benefits would pay for one night a week for someone to sleep in your house and not even a single night for someone to stay awake. Lower rate DLA wouldn’t pay for even two hours of care a week. In fact it might not get you any hours at all, but instead be used to pay for aids or adaptations. Yes it is, but green papers are the first step on the road to new laws. If politicians sense from the responses – or the lack of them - that disabled people and disability organisations won’t put up too much of a fight then they’ll see that as a green light for abolishing DLA as well as AA. You keep going on about ‘disability benefits’ but what exactly are they? Good question. We only keep going on about them because the green paper does. Resolved Question: CPAs - Financial Professional - Clients - Help...?
(Fri, 26 Jun 2009 05:47:09 GMT)
I am a financial professional... doing all types of insurances but mostly specialized in life, disability, education planning, long term care, retirment, estate planning, and business succession... I am just getting in Auto, home, business, health insurance... so I have this CPA who wants to work together in his office selling insurance... But as I was talking to him I never felt like he knows how to recomend people in certain financial product in order to save money on taxes for the clients.. I have a feeling that he never worked with any financial professional and don't know if I can teach him what to look for in terms of people's finances in order to referr business to me...another thing he told me was that he doesn't not solicit life insurance and if this is the case how he expects to work with me?? I want to hear what you all have to say ... and what should I do with him to help him understand what's behind financial planning... and how important it is... ??

Resolved Question: Why does it seem that folks with Medicaid and disability abuse the system?
(Fri, 19 Jun 2009 12:41:00 GMT)
I am a heathcare professional and see these folks coming to Emergency room for something as simple as a diaper rash on a baby. They are frequent flyers in the ER. They get mad because they were seen last after heart attacks and car wrecks because they are coming in for ridiculous reasons. Many of them complain and are demanding. I have insurance with a $1000 deductable. I can't afford to run in and out of the ER for simple things (or big things for that matter) and I make a decent wage. If I needed surgery if would really slam my finances but these folks get the free ride and don't appreciate it. Anyone else share my frustrations?

Resolved Question: I might be off to Al-Khobar in a few months time?
(Sat, 13 Jun 2009 19:49:30 GMT)
Assalam U Alaikum, Sorry for a very lengthy post. I am a Pakistani citizen currently living and working in South Africa. I have a bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering and my current job involves working in the field of engineering information technology. I have around 7 years of professional experience. My employer has a branch office in Al-Khobar and they have offered me a transfer to this office in Al-Khobar. I have a wife and three children (4 years, 2 years, and 10 months). My wife and I have no problems going to Saudi Arabia because we are muslims (Alhamdulillah). The problem is that I have no idea about the cost of living in Al-Khobar that includes living, food, clothes, children's education, transportation and any other thing that is not coming to mind right now. I don't have any friends and relatives in Saudi Arabia who could guide me. Though I am sure this topic might have been discussed several times but can you guys please help me making a decision if I should accept this offer or not. Below is a breakdown of all that they are offering to me. All the costs are based on per annum but will be paid on monthly basis. - Base Salary = SAR 110,472.80 per annum - Housing = SAR 32,067.00 per annum - Transport Allowance = SAR 18,000.00 per annum - Travel Subsidy for return flights to Pakistan once a year = SAR 12,262.00 - Group Life, Accidental dealth, and Disability cover - Health Insurance (I am not sure if this covers only medical or medical and dental both) - End-of-service award payment of 21 days (30 days after 5 years service) salary per completed calendar year of service (They say that only the base salary as provided here shall be computed as part of the Employee’s end-of-service award) In addition, they are paying for our flights to Khobar at the time we leave, they are accomodating us free of cost for the first month in Khobar and also paying me two advance base salaries to buy household goods in the beginning. I am simply not able to decide if or not this is a good offer keeping in view the usual expenses. I realize this also depends upon the life style so just to give you an idea that we have just a modest life style. The maximum entertainment we do is to eat out for two or three times in a month and take our children to places like theme parks and zoo etc. If you do the calculation based on the figures I have given above, how much you think will be paid to me per month after all the deductions? (I am asking this because I know there isn't any tax but not sure if there are usually any other deductions from salaries in Saudi Arabia). If I would be able to save anything from this salary at the end of the month? If you think I am missing out anything here, please let me know about it. If you have any suggestions or anything you think I should discuss with my employer before I make a decision, please let me know about them as well. I'll be grateful if you guys please advise me accordingly. Many thanks. Junaid

Resolved Question: Dallas, TX residents or law professionals only please...?
(Fri, 24 Apr 2009 05:57:34 GMT)
1. Does anybody out there have links to personal injury attorneys for me in the Dallas area? 2. Has anybody out there (in the Dallas area) suffered from an on-site, work related injury/temporary or permanent disability? (if so, please tell me your story) Long story short. In a menagerie of owners, general contractors, subcontractors, and employees I was injured while performing my job. I worked through the injury (in much pain) in order to complete the project. Yes, the injury was reported to my employer...the subcontractor. He did not suggest, advise, or otherwise seem to terribly concerned about getting me medical attention. Now I know why. He had no Workman's Compensation insurance. Here's the problem: My employer is based out of Colorado. Also my home state. PI attorneys here in CO will not touch my case because the injury occurred across state lines. So, I have 2 options once I can find an attorney in the Dallas area. 1. File a claim/suit against the general contractor. 2. File a claim/suit against the owners of the property. Please help. I'm in constant pain and have not held / cannot hold a job since Nov. 17th, 2008. To add insult to injury, my former employer has not responded to any of my phone calls or emails re: said injury. Any ideas appreciated. Plz and Thx. ~peace~

Resolved Question: So, who thinks it's just awesome Obama plans to release YOUR "private" health and medical records for sale?
(Sat, 28 Mar 2009 15:02:14 GMT)
[LIFE WITH BIG BROTHER] "Your health records on sale block" 'Critic says patient consent unneeded in stimulus plan' Posted: March 27, 2009, 7:50 pm Eastern | By Bob Unruh © 2009 WorldNetDaily http://www.wnd.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=93084 The head of the Institute for Health Freedom says now is the time for American residents to rise up if they want to keep control over their health records, because the data soon will be for sale and is forecast to become the next "gold rush." WND has reported several times on similar issues, including when parents in Minnesota recently sued the state to prevent the collection of their infants' DNA without permission to use it for research. Institute President Sue Blevins said the new "stimulus" bill approved by Congress provides for electronic health records for all Americans. The move, she says, weakens an individual's control over his or her own health records to the point that data could be employed for research that may end up being used against the patient. "The economic stimulus law plans for every American to use an electronic health record (EHR) and allows those records to be sold for research and public-health purposes – without patients' consent," she explained. * * * * * What do my medical records contain? Medical records are created when you receive treatment from a health professional such as a physician, nurse, dentist, chiropractor, or psychiatrist. Records may include your medical history, details about your lifestyle (such as smoking or involvement in high-risk sports), and family medical history. In addition, your medical records contain laboratory test results, medications prescribed, and reports that indicate the results of operations and other medical procedures. Your records could also include the results of genetic testing used to predict your future health. And they might include information about your participation in research projects. Information you provide on applications for disability, life or accidental insurance with private insurers or government programs can also become part of your medical file. http://www.privacyrights.org/fs/fs8-med.htm

Resolved Question: Student loan and mental health disability?
(Thu, 05 Feb 2009 00:43:22 GMT)
Student loan debt and disability?!? (long)? long story short, I started college at age 18, and did ok for the first two semesters. I struggled to go to class and get through the day because I had some mental health disabilities. At age 22, I finallly got some help from professionals and have been pulled out of work and school. I have a hard time functioning with people and it caused me to have severe panic attacks and anxiety along with other things. I am now 24 and have been seeing a cousnler for two years. I have been out of work and school for two years. I have been diagnosed with being bi-polar and having Borderline personality disorder. They say the anxiety and panic attacks are common among patients with those problems. They've tried medications on me, and every day is struggle to do the simplist things. Many of the medications put me over the edge and i feel extremely suicidal and therefor come off them. ONly to be tried on another new medication. Currently they are trying me on Trileptal. The point of asking this is: I have about $20,000 in student loan debt and my husband works but makes right at the poverty line for our family. We make ends meet and pay the importnat bills each month (all the utilities and housing) we receive foods stamps and state funded medical insurance) which has allowed us to have a loan deferrment on our student loans, but we are now going to loose that ability to use that after another year. Because I have a mental health disorder and have been told that It's unlikely that i will ever be able to work, is there some kind of way to deal with these loans with a the involvement of my dr's? I have applied for SSD, but have not received it because i'm in an appeal process. I was told most people are denied the first time around. Any information is appreciated. I'm starting to stress over the bills pileing up. And please dont 'say go back to work. I become a nasty volitile person when out in public. thanks

Resolved Question: I have been on disability in California for almost 2 years, and from what I am told, my payments will stop...?
(Thu, 08 Jan 2009 19:45:14 GMT)
I already applied for SSI, but in February my Disability payments from my employer's insurance company will cease and I was just told that the approval for Social Security could take months. I need some kind of income or I will lose my apartment and not be able to pay my bills. What can I do? I have a lawyer, but he didn't fully address my concern the last time I met with him. I need to know what my options are... Please, I need professional answers so if you don't know, don't guess. I appreciate your help.

Resolved Question: New LGBT equality laws go into effect in Calif.?
(Tue, 06 Jan 2009 01:43:53 GMT)
Three new laws broadening protections for California’s LGBT community have gone into effect. The laws protect seniors in assisted living and young people in schools and foster care. The Foster Youth School Safety Education Act helps protect foster youth against harassment and discrimination at school. The new law educates foster care youth and their caregivers about existing California laws that protect students against bias. It was authored by Assemblymember Julia Brownley (D) and supported by the National Association of Social Workers and the Gay-Straight Alliance Network. The second new law will help prevent bias in senior care facilities and nursing homes. Authored by former Sen. Carole Migden (D) it requires licensed healthcare professionals who have constant interaction with seniors to participate in a training program that focuses on preventing discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Many health professionals already receive cultural diversity training, but it does not include information and education about LGBT issues. Basic rights, such as the choice to live in the same nursing home with a partner and the right to hospital visitation are routinely denied to same-gender couples in older age, according to a 2000 study from the Policy Institute of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. The study also found that same-gender partners lack essential protections, including Medicaid benefits and access to pensions, which typically protect the homes and retirement funds of surviving spouses who are married. The third law is the Civil Rights Act of 2008. It strengthens existing law to ensure protections based on gender, race, color, religion, ancestry, national origin, disability, medical condition, marital status and sexual orientation. The law clarifies sections of law that prohibit discrimination in insurance and government services and activities. In addition to support from EQCA, it was endorsed by the California State Conference of the NAACP. Looks like a reason for optimism in CA? Maybe prop. 8 will be overturned, no?

Resolved Question: Career Research Family Consumers?
(Tue, 16 Dec 2008 12:49:24 GMT)
Hi, My name is ___________, the carreer I decided to investigate was Seconday Education, which is a high school teacher, now you may think a teacher is a person who is making your life impossible but thats just Mr. Chain. Their are more than 1 million secondary school teachers employed in the U.S., US teachers are generally paid on graduated scales, with income depending on experience. Salaries vary greatly depending on state, relative cost of living, and grade taught, salary for a teacher with a bachelor's degree being an estimated $32,000 in the early years of teaching, usually teachers will get an increase in their salary yearly. They are employed by contracts, some contracts may include long-term disability insurance, life insurance, emergency/personal leave and investment options, one of the highest incomes of a teacher is usually maximum of $42,000. The first years in teaching are said to be very tough since its not a high paid job considering you are barely coming fresh out of college, if you love Roman Noodles then the financial should be no problem since thats what you are gonna be eating for the next 4 years. Teaching has an extremely high level of Work-Related Stress or WRS abbreviated, the degree of this problem is becoming increasingly recognized and support systems are being put into place. Misconduct by teachers is extremely untolerable, as punishment can be from banned from schools or long term prison sentence. A study by the AAUW reported that 9.6% of students in the United States claim to have received unwanted sexual attention from an adult associated with education, not necessirily a teacher but it could be by a volunteer, bus driver, administrator or other adult - sometime during their educational career. A good high school teacher is someone who loves helping others. Some important general work activies are developing constructive and cooperative working relationships with others, and maintaining them over time. Identifying the developmental needs of others and coaching, mentoring, or otherwise helping others to improve their knowledge or skills, identifying the educational needs of others, developing formal educational or training programs or classes, and teaching or instructing others. Use public speaking techniques, a bad one is ensuring correct grammar, punctuation, or spelling. Prepare educational reports, advise students, record student progress, resolve behavioral or academic problems, establish and maintain relationships with students, select teaching materials to meet student needs, develop course or training objectives, adapt course of study to meet student needs. Some more specific stuff includes attending staff meetings and serve on committees. Use computers, audio-visual aids, and other equipment and materials to supplement presentations. Establish and enforce rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining order among students. Prepare students for later grades by encouraging them to explore learning opportunities and to persevere with challenging tasks. Prepare, administer, and grade tests and assignments to evaluate students' progress. Attend professional meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops to maintain and improve professional competence. Chat with parents or guardians, other teachers, counselors, and administrators to resolve students' behavioral and academic problems, sponsor extracurricular activities such as clubs, student organizations, and academic contests. Instruct and monitor students in the use of equipment and materials to prevent injuries and damage. Interview (Mr. Buller) 1.Do you sign a contract when you get hired? 2.Do teachers get an increase in their salary yearly? 3.What are the requirements to teach science in high school? 4.Can you just quit if you want or do you have to finish your contract? 5.Can a person get hired as a teacher if in his/her past has committed a serious crime like murder or rape? Personal Information: Why I chose to research on the teaching category is because teachers are almost the people that have more days off in their life, I want to specifically study on Science, it involves obtaining a Bachelor's Degree which is a 4 year college education, and later in life I want to be a Coach, because its fun making people run until they puke. Now if you know anything about Nader he is not a raciest and when he said that he stuck to his guns he did not have to apologize because he did not use in in a racial context the man is Lebanese and a first generation American and has helped out all minorities. whats really odd is that the media didn't want to put the spotlight on him so they never made a big deal. the media and the two parties don't want people know anything about Nader so they talk crap about him and try to keep him and his campaigns out of the spotlight.

Resolved Question: NJ Temporary disability insurance?
(Wed, 03 Dec 2008 04:20:43 GMT)
This has nothing to do with SSDI. Nj has short term disability insurance for up to 6 months. I am trying to find out if there is a provision to work part time ($100/wk) and still get benefits--from what I heard it is all or nothing... I actually do better when I am working, but just had a major setback today. I can still work a couple half days......and I am afraid if I stop providing service to one of my clients he will fall through the cracks--as it is the other socalled professionals treat him like he is an cognitively impaired--yet he does have age appropriate cognitive skills--it is a 5 year old who has been sight reading at least a year--but the others insist he only knows a few letters--he knew most letters 2 years ago--they think he only recognizes a few numbers--when he can actually count at least to 10--and recognize the numbers and put them in order... it is 11 o cock at night--I can't call now--and I am worried--not to mention--It may take days to actually get somebody on the phone that will pay attention i can't hobble down to the office--they don't let you--its done through the mail--maybe I can try a singing telegram...that might stimulate their brain cells...

Resolved Question: Is Spinal Stenosis serious?
(Thu, 27 Nov 2008 22:53:57 GMT)
I herniated a disc (L4-L5) a year ago at work. After a year and a half of pain, problems, work comp docs, insurance companies, attorneys, and a settlement, not once was my spinal stenosis mentioned. It wasn't until I had a second opinion (1 month ago) I would have never known about it. The doc said it was at the same level as the h.disc and was severe. So, why did none of the previous professionals mention it? Is it not serious enough to be considered a disability?

Resolved Question: Apartment (Trained) Service Dog information?
(Sun, 16 Nov 2008 19:08:48 GMT)
Before I start, I found SOMEwhat of my answer here: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080620052538AACfBlB But my question is this: My Dog is getting trained over the next 6 weeks as a Service Dog, through a professional trainer. We are training her to do things like balance me when I get dizzy, sense negative thoughts or moods and get me outside - or play with me during those times to break the bad thoughts (this is not a trained thing, this is a "I have a damn good dog" thing I think), remind me to take my medicine, stabilize my mood, ease my anxiety, sense when I have a panic attack coming on and calm me down, and get me outside of any contained building on command (like when I start to overstress). My apartment complex is requiring I get a letter from a doctor stating this is a service dog, is this legal? The letter will not be giving to me by a regular medical doctor, only a psychiatrist. Because I am not insured atm, this will cost me close to 400 dollars (on top of the money I am putting into training, vests, equipment, etc which is quite a bit) , IF that particular psychiatrist will give it to me in the first 1-2 visits (Not likely). I am not currently under treatment with a psychiatrist because the dog is doing me so much good there's really no reason for that cost atm. Come a few months down the road when my dog is trained and stable I plan on getting a part time job, where I'll get insurance but.. in the mean time, do i HAVE to spend this money? I know its required for ESA (emotional support animals) but my dog is (will be) specifically trained by a professional and therefore is classified as a service dog. By getting a letter from my doctor I am revealing my disability and Is (i thought?) against ADA. A letter from my trainer seems more on queue with what they would require. I mean, would deaf people require a letter from their doctor stating they are deaf and the animal is a hearing dog or would the certificate from their training be enough? Thank you for all your help and answers, I'm going through that court case now. BTW, I am legitimately and legally disabled, and the service dog in question has had approximate 4 months of previous training, and the 6 weeks of training is for basic things (actually its 8 weeks, 1 week of private training before and after). We have both decided we want to commit to training but we have to take it one step at a time! I am having previous proof of my disability mailed to me, even though its more then a year old. Hopefully the apartment complex will accept this, and if they don't - the (refundable) fee for pets in the apartment is cheaper then the actual paper from a doctor, for the time being. I agree though eventually I think this "piece of paper" will help open doors a vest and training wont.

Resolved Question: Why are Americans so opposed to socialized/single-payer healthcare?
(Tue, 07 Oct 2008 18:30:10 GMT)
I've been a nurse at multiple institutions in the U.S., including the world-renowned Mayo Clinic, and I can honestly say that most people do not get what they pay for, and many healthcare professionals are both overpaid and overworked, which leads to poor quality, expensive healthcare experiences for many patients. I've been shopping around for countries to move to, because my own healthcare is becoming too expensive (I have chronic cerebral vasculitis and an AVM, requiring several brain surgeries and am in the process of filing for bankruptcy for in excess of $100K that my private health insurance plan will not pay), and I need care, but if I stay in the U.S., I am going to have to file for disability and live off the government in order to get my care. My two jobs do not provide me with healthcare benefits, and I have reached my $750K lifetime maximum with my private health insurance plan, and will never be able to get private health insurance again - unless it is associated with a group healthcare plan with a full time job. My health is brittle enough that I'm predominantly only able to do per diem work. I need the flexibility to sit out from work for a few weeks if I have a bout with seizures. Though per diem work pays quite well, it's rare that it includes healthcare benefits. I've spent a great deal of time in Canada, the U.K., France and Italy, and they all have really phenomenal healthcare systems that are available to people regardless of their ability to afford or even find private health insurance. Many people who would otherwise not be able to work, because they need to be made impoverished to be covered by the government in the U.S., are able to work in these other countries. The current U.S. system seems to encourage capable workers to file for disability and "live off the government," because you have to be very poor in order to get government assistance for medical bills here. Why do people support this? I don't want to be forced out of work. I'm fully capable of working, but just under unusual conditions. Why not just set up a system where healthcare is covered by the government just like education, police, firefighters, military defense and tons of other services that people don't balk about having to pay taxes for? kathy069: As I've said, I've lived in Canada. Much of my family has moved there since the election of 2004. One of my significant others is based there. Their tax rate is not 50%, I'm sorry you have been misinformed on that. And their healthcare does exactly what it sets out to do: provide quality and thorough healthcare to everyone, regardless of their ability to pay, and regardless of their having private health insurance. I get my information from personal experience, not from the news. answer man: On the contrary. I've had brain surgery in both the U.K. and Italy (I have had 11 brain surgeries in 15 years), and in both cases, I was admitted immediately after having seizures, and received surgery within 8 hours of admission. That wasn't too long of a wait. It's terrible that you have been misinformed. Jen: I speak from experience. I am not talking out my ass here. Yes, it is true that in most countries with socialized medical care, there is a distinct shortage of primary care physicians (though that is becoming increasingly true here as well - they just don't make a lot of money anywhere), and so if you want a regular doctor, you have to wait. But if you have a problem that needs quick attention, you just walk into an E.R. in these countries, and you're in right away, and don't have an enormous bill (or one at all) afterward. It's true that cosmetic and unnecessary procedures are not covered by socialized healthcare plans, but they're not covered by our insurance here either. Everything that is medically necessary - even experimental treatments, have been covered by the government for my friends and family who live in Canada, the U.K., Italy and France. In cases where they do not have the capability to provide those procedures, those systems often send patients to the U.S. black leopard: You talk nonsense, and fear not - things are so bad in the U.S. that even the illegals are leaving in droves: http://online.wsj.com/article_email/SB122289829299095859-lMyQjAxMDI4MjAyMjgwOTI4Wj.html Personally, I don't think that it's worth wrecking an entire population that needs affordable healthcare in order to keep those pesky illegals from getting any care. As it stands right now, those illegals walk into any E.R. and they have to receive treatment, because of the COBRA antidumping Act of 1985. But it's unlikely that an uninsured illegal is going to pay for the services that they are required to receive, so guess who foots the bill? You and me and everyone else! But in the meantime, the rest of us who are legal and concerned about our credit have to worry about bankruptcy and poverty from our medical expenses. At least socialized medicine makes it so that *

Resolved Question: Why are Americans so opposed to socialized/single-payer healthcare?
(Tue, 07 Oct 2008 03:47:24 GMT)
You don't have to read all of this below... but it's some background so you can know where the question comes from: I've been a nurse at multiple institutions in the U.S., including the world-renowned Mayo Clinic, and I can honestly say that most people do not get what they pay for, and many healthcare professionals are both overpaid and overworked, which leads to poor quality, expensive healthcare experiences for many patients. Why not just set up a system where healthcare is covered by the government just like education, police, firefighters, military defense and tons of other services that people don't balk about having to pay taxes for? Michael I: I am both a patient with a chronic illness and a nurse. I have spent months at a time in Canada, France, the U.K. and Italy. They have superior healthcare systems. I worked at the Mayo Clinic. I watched foreigners come over and die, because they thought they would get superior care here. I speak from experience. I think for myself. Your condescension is noted, and not appreciated. I ask a question in genuine curiosity, not hostility. Please treat me with respect, and I will grant you the same. 8***L: So what if there are still private systems for people who can afford it? People who want to pay tons of money for FedEx, UPS and DHL have those options as well. What makes you think other systems are terrible? Why are Italy and France ranked number 1 and 2 by the WHO for their healthcare systems. Why is the U.S. between Costa Rica and Slovenia, at 37? Why is the U.S.'s infant mortality rate so high? Why is it that me, a capable worker, is being forced to file for disability, because no job will have me with my chronic illness which requires me to have weeks off at a time? If I work, I make too much to get Medicaid. So now I have to file for bankruptcy to get my unpaid medical bills discharged, and disability to get future bills managed. 3rd Party 2008: As I said, I am looking for other places to live. I don't think that prohibits me from asking the question, though. It's still a "mostly" free country. If I only had $900 to pay for shots, then that would be great. I pay for my $300/mo meds no problem. It's the $100K leftover from brain surgeries I've had in the past 4 years that I can't cover, and now have to file for bankruptcy to manage. asmith1022_2006: On the contrary, the Canadian and U.K. systems do exactly what they set out to do - give citizens access to adequate healthcare regardless of their ability to pay, and without their having to file for bankruptcy or go into debt to get their basic healthcare needs met. I call that a good system. I'm always amazed at how many Americans assume that socialized healthcare systems are horrible, but have absolutely no evidence to back that up. Paki88: You are a very wise 15 year old. I hope you use those smarts and that insight to change the world for the better. Sorry we've left it such a nasty place for you and your generation. We've been most irresponsible. Kimberly G: I completely empathize with you. Part of me is a little smug that because I have no other option, the option I have to take is actually forcing everyone to pay for my healthcare. People tell me they don't want to pay for my

Resolved Question: I'm having to file for bankruptcy due to exorbitant medical bills. Advice?
(Thu, 02 Oct 2008 19:03:04 GMT)
I've just found out today that I am likely to have to file for bankruptcy. I have a chronic medical condition that has required multiple hospitalizations in the past 15 years (cerebral vasculitis), and I've just been informed that I've hit my lifetime maximum ($750K) with my particular private insurance policy, and they will no longer cover my healthcare expenses. For the previous 5 years, I've paid a total of $28,000 in premiums to my insurance company. My remaining medical bills total over $100K. I make too much to qualify for Medicare. My principle professions are per diem nursing and exotic dancing. Neither of these jobs offer group health plans. I've come to a point where I just do not know what to do. I am planning to file for bankruptcy to have my medical bills discharged, but it is not as if my medical condition will go away. I've been a per diem nurse, because this particular professional configuration allows me to work when I am well, and does not punish me for multiple absences when I am going through a particularly bad spell of seizures. The same is true with my particular exotic dancing job. After this - bankruptcy, plus meeting my lifetime maximum in medical expenditures - I will never be eligible for private health insurance again, unless it is associated with a group plan. So I'm in a quandry. I could potentially quit the dancing career that I love and try to find a full-time nursing job in order to get group health insurance... but this will be something that I find completely unfulfilling personally, and when my health gets particularly bad, I'll probably be wearing the patience of my colleagues and bosses. Or I could quit both of my jobs, file for disability and live off of the government and your tax dollars for the rest of my life. The second choice is, of course, easier... and probably the route I am going to go. But I'm wondering if any of you have any experience in this and have better advice? Palin Power!: You're right. I do make more than enough money to pay for my anti-seizure meds and steroids. What I don't make enough money to pay for are the 6 brain surgeries and extended post surgical recovery periods I have had in the past 15 years. FBH: Thanks. I do speak Spanish. And as a nurse, I can tell you that what you think illegal immigrants are getting away with in terms of healthcare is not true. Hospitals often dump their indigent and illegal immigrant patients, if they don't have staff that call ICE on them while they're in the hospital. No2McCain!P: Don't worry. I'm voting for Obama, and I registered 67 people to vote this week too. Every single one of them said they were voting for Obama. He may not get us closer to better healthcare, but I do trust his ability to get us in a better place financially and diplomatically as a country. Too bad things are so bad for so many people right now.

Resolved Question: How can I express my dissatisfaction HR with whom I will have to deal with in the future?
(Thu, 25 Sep 2008 03:06:46 GMT)
My company recently consolodated their HR services, removing human resources representatives from the individual stores, selecting a limited number of these supervisors to float from location to location. these floating HRs, along with a newly instituted call center, are how the employees such as myself are to get information on benefits and resolve whatever issues we may have. Unfortunately for me, this change-over happened just as i was beginning to compile my paperwork & information for my impending maternity leave. Upon calling the newly minted hotline, I was directed to speak with the floating HR for my location (of course they didn't have any information on the HR like a name or number to reach them, nor could they tell me when i might catch them at my location.) As luck would have it, I did bump into her a month or two before my due date but she had zero information to give me. I was hoping to find out when i could stop working, how to file for my disability insurance (that i pay into), when i should put in for my vacation etc. Basically I wanted whatever information I needed (to have "all my ducks in a row") to ensure that i would not have to go without a pay check. She kept giving me information for the neighboring state while telling me she was unaware of the company protocal for the state i live/work in. this was of course because she services stores in this neighboring state plus one in my state (my store.) I ended up dragging myself to work up until my due date, working on the sales floor, running around as big as a house and the week I was due i was actually on a week's vacation. Only once I was home on vacation was I made aware of the fact that I could have stopped working 2 weeks prior to my due date as part of my insurance agreement. This was just a case of getting lucky and getting someone on the hotline who actually knew something. (everytime you call you get a different call center rep who tells you something completely different.) Of course finding out I could take 2 weeks, paid prior to the due date was useless since it was after my due date by this time. I came in a month prior to my return date to put in for my remaining 2 weeks of vacation time and iron out my schedule for once I return with my supervisor. My supervisor conferred with this same floating HR to verify that all the necessary paperwork had been filed etc. When I returned to work this week, not only was i sent home because I was not yet entered into the system and the HR has failed to make me (& my supervisor) aware of additional paperwork necessary for my return. This delayed me 2 days returning to work (for which i obviously didn't get paid for) and necessitated my making an additional trip to the doctor to obtain this paperwork (thus spending additional money for an office visit). To top it all off when I finally was able to return to work I did not receive a paycheck for the 2 weeks of vacation time i had put in for a month earlier. this was because I was not entered back into the system (because of her.) I feel this woman is a disgrace to her position. If I were as inept at my job as she is at hers I wouldn't have a job. If i do not know the answer to a query at work, I am expected to research it and get the answer. "I don't know" is not acceptable unless it is followed by "but I will find out and get back to you asap." that's just being professional, which she obviously is not. She is collecting a paycheck for work she is not adequately performing and caused me (and who knows how many other employees) significant hardship. All this may not seem like much but I worked while pregnant 2 weeks after my feet stopped fitting into shoes when i could have been on paid leave, wasted a week of vacation I could have spent later with my baby, worried endlesssly about whether or not all my paperwork was correct and I would actually receive a paycheck or not once i was on leave, returned to work after leaving my baby only to be sent home 30 minutes later, missed 2 days of pay and almost had a stroke when i got an empty paycheck upon returning to work. Mind you, I had to scramble to correct all of her oversights... Obviously i may have to deal with her in the future, since I have no other options, so despite my desire to tell her how inept i think she is, how she should be ashamed of herself --I can't. But I don't think she should get away with her less than professional behavior and below parr performance. Plus it's just plain mean, i spoke with her candidly about my specific and overwhelming worry about making sure money kept coming in at a steady pace and she completely disregarded those worries. Forget that I have been a top sales person for this company since 2001 who has been paying into these benefits without ever using them all this time. I'm just disgusted. I just don't think i can let it go without saying/doing something.... How would you handle this situat How would you h

Resolved Question: How can I locate a professional to provide a medical disability assessment for an insurance settlement?
(Thu, 27 Mar 2008 22:33:21 GMT)
I need to find an independent, qualified person/service to provide expert testimony for an insurance settlement case. Specifically, to provide an assessment of the nature, extent, and prognosis of injuries I sustained in an auto accident - with the possibility of using this information if the case goes to court. I have looked online for "disability assessments", "disability profiles", etc., but am not finding anything in my local area (Portland, Oregon). Any suggestions?

Resolved Question: Guardian disability insurance questions?
(Tue, 24 Jul 2007 22:10:16 GMT)
Is this a good policy? My broker says it's better than Aflac because it's non-cancellable and lasts until I'm 65 should I need it. He said that as a white-collar professional, long-term disability ins is important for me which I can understand since I need to protect my income. He gave me a health questionnaire to fill out. I'm not totally comfortable filling it out - is it standard to fill one out and do a physical exam and bloodwork like they want? If I take this policy, does this long-term disability ins totally replace Aflac (I have a 6 month policy through my employer). Does it make a difference that my broker is a proponent of the Lifetime Economic Acceleration Process (LEAP), which I think is hooey (I know LEAP is a subsidiary of Guardan)? Aside from that his description of Guardian disability insurance makes it seem like a good choice among several (Met, NY, Std).

Resolved Question: maternity leave?
(Fri, 09 Mar 2007 20:07:14 GMT)
I have posted this already but didn't get many answers so I am posting again...I am desperate ok, I am due to have a baby in May. I have been having many problems with work since they found out I was pregnant. I have been paying a short tem disability premium since I started so therefore I will be paid for 6 weeks of my leave. The company does offer 12 weeks of leave though (FMLA). Well my original plan was to leave and not come back, but not make them aware of that until I found a new job. I can't tell them before I leave because I don't think that I will get my short term disability if they know that my last day will be the day I go into labor. Here's the real prob, if I tell them after I get all my short term disability pay and stuff then they could force me to reimburse them for the 90% of my medical insurance that they will be paying while I am gone. I am really in a predicament and need some advice from an HR professional or someone who knows about this stuff.

This "leftover" from cancer is really getting to me. I've had 4 surgical treatments, several cortisone treatments and antibiotics, periods of bleeding, discharge and extreme urgency issues that have me on disability. I just made it back from the store barely. I can't go for walks, interact with people, or can I afford more professional intervention as my health insurance stopped and the new policy won't go into effect until next year. I was told it would start right away but it turned out to be a lie. No one cares as I contacted media and State people who are supposed to step in and help when trash like this happens. I guess they do if it's high profile enough to make them some bucks. I'm venting here some, but I'm looking for someone that has been there and found a way back.

Resolved Question: Death and Taxes... How do I seperate my inheritence from estate?
(Tue, 05 Dec 2006 10:34:39 GMT)
My mother passed away several months ago and tax season is looming. My brother and I received 6k each from her benificiary disability thing, there was car life insurance that paid on the car with another 1k to pay back from the time she was disabled, we've also gotten the pension worth 12k. We're waiting on the 401k, a group life insurance of 42k, 8k of which is going to the funeral home, and a individual life insurance of 36k which will go through her sister to us. My question is, how do I figure out what I should file for my own taxes and for my late mother's taxes. o_O All the money has been switching hands between us and being paid for this or that, and trying to get all this paperwork done. What is taxable? What's not? Are we being really stupid? Do I really really have to go hire a dang professional? :P Thanks

Resolved Question: Can someone give me advice?
(Mon, 25 Sep 2006 06:44:46 GMT)
I had a drunk driver hit me while I was traveling on the job. My recovery took a year. I was already physically disabled sense birth. I learned to walk at age two. When I had the accident I had to learn to walk all over again. It took one year of recovery. By the time I recovered my employers would not let me return to work. I lost my job! The drunk drive that injured me did not have insurance and could not pay my medical bills. Before the accident I was a confident professional single woman and loved my career. I got stuck with paying for everything! From this day foward my life has been a mess. I am still unemployed and I am struggling. I am not the same person. I do not have the symptoms of post stress traumatic disorder but I have gone through personality changes. I feel irritated easily. Before the accident I never felt anger even when it comes to my physical disability. I feel resentful that I lost my job and cant find another one.My relationships have suffered
