Resolved Question: If you got into an auto accident?
(Mon, 01 Mar 2010 22:23:35 GMT)
You got into an auto accident and no one got a ticket but, you used someones car, there was no insurance, and that person was legally disabled. The state sent them a letter saying they had to turn in their license and tags. The person filed an appeal and the state did not take the license or tags but, the person with the disability cannot renew their tags due to the accident that the other person had in her car. That person needs the vehicle for Doctor's appointments for her and her Mother who has MS. They live in a small town where there is no public transportation and no one to transport them. Is there any exemption for that person so she can get the tags for her vehicle? She is on SSi and cannot afford an attorney and legal aide said they do not handle cases like that. The insurance company totaled the other persons vehicle when it only had a dent in the rear passengers door for $10,000.00. I have searched the web all day and cannot find a thing. I live in Texas but, she lives in Iowa. Legal advice would sure be appreciated. I don't know how to help her. Thanks. She didn't have insurance becaue the car had a mechanical problem and she could not afford, at the time, to repair it. So, in order not to pay insurance for the car that didn't work and was sitting, she let it lapse. She has a van she can use. Now, she cannot get tags for either one of them.

Resolved Question: Is Republican Governor McDonnell lying again in his opposition speech?
(Thu, 28 Jan 2010 03:33:31 GMT)
WRONG ON ECONOMIC RECOVERY Gov. Bob McDonnell: Today, the federal government is simply trying to do too much. Last year, we were told that massive new federal spending would create more jobs 'immediately' and hold unemployment below 8%. In the past year, over three million Americans have lost their jobs, yet the Democratic Congress continues deficit spending, adding to the bureaucracy, and increasing the national debt on our children and grandchildren. [McDonnell Prepared Remarks, 1/27/10] CBO: The American Recovery And Reinvestment Act Has Created Up To 1.6 Million American Jobs. According to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, "CBO now estimates that in the third quarter of calendar year 2009, ARRA's policies raised real GDP by between 1.2 percent and 3.2 percent, lowered the unemployment rate by between 0.3 and 0.9 percentage points, and increased the number of people employed by between 600,000 and 1.6 million compared with what those values would have been otherwise." [CBO, 11/30/09; emphasis added] CBPP: Recovery Act Is Keeping 6 Million Americans Out Of Poverty. According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, "Although meant chiefly to help the broad economy, the stimulus plan Congress enacted earlier this year (the American Recovery and Re-Investment Act of 2009, or ARRA) had the important secondary effect of significantly ameliorating the recession's impact on poverty. This analysis, which comes one day before the Census Bureau will release updated poverty figures (for 2008), examines seven of the recovery act's provisions - two improvements in unemployment insurance, three tax credits for working families, an increase in food stamps, and a one-time payment for retirees, veterans, and people with disabilities - and finds that they alone are preventing more than 6 million Americans from falling below the poverty line and are reducing the severity of poverty for 33 million more. Those 6 million people include more than 2 million children and over 500,000 seniors. This analysis includes state-specific estimates for California, Texas, Florida, New York, and Illinois." Resolved Question: How do I enroll my mom in unemployment, food stamps, disability, etc, in the state of Texas?
(Wed, 28 Oct 2009 19:21:29 GMT)
My mom quit her nursing job in February 2008. They were about to fire her so she gave them her two weeks notice and resigned. She cashed out her 401K which was about $14,000 and lived off of that until August 2008. After that she was bouncing from one nursing job to the next. She is 60 years old and got fired from many of these jobs because she didn't move fast enough, couldn't keep up and do the job well enough, etc. I gave her around $3000 that fall of my student loan money just so she could make bills and have something to eat. She got really sick. She thinks she has diabetes. She has no job and no insurance so when she went to the doctor she just told him she has diabetes and he gave her some medicine for it. There were no tests run for anything. She is still not doing any better. The speaks and moves very slowly and she is just not herself. We have all been really worried about her but she insists nothing is wrong with her, and refused to go to the doctor to get further testing. Finally, four days before rent is due this month, she finally admits she is too sick to work. She is currently working for a nursing home. When they hired her they (verbally) told her she would get every other weekend and two evenings per week. They haven't put her on the schedule in over a month. She went in there practically begging them to fire her but they won't because they said they have nothing to fire her for. I am assuming they are afraid of having to pay unemployment benefits if they do fire her since they have no reason to. They keep telling her that she was hired on a on-call as-needed basis. My mom is requesting the employment paperwork from them but we are pretty sure that it won't have the schedule that they verbally agreed to on it, it will just say "as needed". It's really not fair for them to keep her hired there and never give her ANY hours. She has exhausted all of the nursing resources in our city and is really not well enough to be working anyway. I am out of money and I have no more money to give her. My question is, should we try to file unemployment? Should we take her down and get food stamps? welfare? I guess she needs to be on disability but she will have to visit a doctor to accomplish that. Is there a medical program for people in this situation so I won't have to pay for all these expensive medical tests she will need? How long does it take to get approved for any government funds like disability? What order should we do these things in? Please, serious answers only, any help appreciated!!

Voting Question: Can our country sustain with our current health care system?
(Wed, 21 Oct 2009 23:22:41 GMT)
With medical costs taking a greater and greater percentage of our incomes, when will the breaking point come? With more and more people going uninsured, whether by choice or because the cost for insurance is out of reach, how can our government survive? Since our laws prohibit turning away emergency care for anybody who walks through the hospital doors, someone has to end up paying those bills. Many people are struggling to merely pay their mortgages or rent, let alone save cash for that $50,000-$100,000 hospital bill that comes in the mail after some accident or extended hospital stays. The uninsured might often find that it's easier to declare bankruptcy, kicking the burden right back to the American taxpayer. And for the uninsured with jobs, sure, if a judgment is placed against them, the medical bills can be garnished from their wages. (Exceptions are: North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas and Pennsylvania) But then legal costs pile on top of medical costs and large medical bills will still go unpaid. That does not even include the costs of deferring care for disease. People who are diagnosed with serious illnesses can end up being disabled because they are not getting the care they need or perhaps don't even know they have a serious illness until it is symptomatic because they do not get routine checkups. Once they're on disability, we will be paying even more than we would have if they had been able to get preventative and necessary care. It seems to me that our money would be better spent to keep people healthy, working, and paying taxes than it would be to let their medical conditions deteriorate to the point of disability. IF we did not already have laws stating that hospitals must render care, that people can shift their debt to the government through bankruptcy, or that people can collect disability and welfare, our current system might be sustainable. But unless these policies are reversed, how will our country sustain itself with our current system? Memphis--insurance companies are profitable only by collecting more in premiums than they pay in claims. It's the UNprofitable people who are getting kicked back to the taxpayers. That is unsustainable and is, in effect, subsidizing the health care industry. The government is already heavily involved in paying for these problems, but it's the insurance companies that are receiving payments from health care. The Dark Knight--increasing revenue is the only way to pay for increasing expenses. With our current system, tax increases are inevitable. Omega57--although I'm not sure if the proposed bills would make things worse, a single payer (Medicare for all ) system seems more logical to me. It is a political hot potato, just like deportation for illegal immigrants was 30-40 years ago when it actually would have been a viable option, but it seems much more straightforward than what is happening right now.

Voting Question: Denied Medicaid/Medicare?
(Thu, 13 Aug 2009 18:31:37 GMT)
I've been trying to help a friend who is a widower on perm disability, who escaped an abusive household, get on his feet. He's living with another family member and paying 500 dollars of his 600 dollars monthly money for rent/utilities, leaving him 100 dollars. this family member also bought a car that he's letting my friend used, and added him to the insurance policy (which is probably why he's paying so much for rent). He recently managed to get government medical care for his (rotten to the core) son (who picked up the abusive behavior from the rest of the family) as well as 150 dollars in food stamps a month. Unfortunately he was denied TANF (apparently 600 dollars a month is too much for support for a disabled person and their eight year old. It may be that they considered the other family member's income or something, despite the fact that the other is receiving 500 dollars a month for his expenses. What's worse is he's terrified that he's going to have to move back with the abusive family due to financial issues. He was also denied Medicaid/Medicare for himself, despite the fact that he's on SSDI and has been for years due to his disability. He's bright, I'm sure he'd work if he could, I'm trying to get him into Vocational Rehabilitation. He's suffering from severe depression, thoughts of suicide but not actions aside from cutting. He needs to see a doctor, get diagnosed, and get on some medication, etc. I don't know if VR can help him if he's so severely depressed and without medication. How can one appeal to TANF/Medicare/Medicaid? Is there an advocacy group out there or a lawyer or something that can step up and speak for him, or should he just give it up and move back to live with his abusive family? He's in Travis Country (Austin), Texas.

Resolved Question: Can I qualify for medical disability?
(Mon, 03 Aug 2009 13:05:31 GMT)
I really do not know much about this at all so any answers will help. I am in Texas. I have type 1 diabetes and thyroid disease. I am also being tested for Lupus. I am 21 years old. I got divorced and lost my insurance a year ago so have not been consistanlty taking my meds like I need to. I am dealing with the consequences of that because of the complications not taking it has left me. I am in constant pain, I have nerve damage, and my vision has decreased dramatically. I just think this may be my only option. I have three babies to take care of and need to get well. Do I qualify? How does the process work?

Resolved Question: child custody ~ child support ~ disability income?
(Sun, 03 May 2009 04:35:23 GMT)
child custody ~ child support ~ disability income? i am fighting for custody of my two kids. my kids dad currently gets chld support that i pay and he gets disability for our two kids due to him being on disability. he thinks that since he isnt working and is on disability that if i do win full custody that he would only hav eto give up the disability checks since they automatically go to the custodial parent. he thinks that he would not have to pay child support since he isnt working and the disability checks that the kids get ($162 a month each ) would be the child support pmt. is he correct that he would be have to pay child support and i would just get the disability checks? ps we live in TEXAS. I dont care about the money and am even ossibly willing ot pay fo the health insurance and lower child support to be less than the standard 25% so i dont care about the money I am just trying to figure out his thinking and find out if he is right. ps he is on disability due to having a kidney transplant last year and the disability is temp i was told he gets it for either 6-9- or 12 months forgot the exact length but i know after a certin amount of time it stops. he is not "un able to work". he was told he can hold a part time job and still collect disability but if he gets a full time job it stops. he is a very lazy person and lives off the government. i dont understand why he would exempt from taking care of his responsibility as a father for any reason. he made kids and has a responsibility. he can get a part time job to pay child support if he had to but he is too lazy to get off his butt and get dressed to go anywhere i have ben told that if a parent is not holding a job then the order would be for 25% of the average min wage job at working 40 hours a week. and they have to find a way to pay it one way or another ps i have a lawyer and he doesnt so our upcomming court will be him against my lawyer

Resolved Question: Does anyone know about Short Term Preganancy Disability Insurance?
(Mon, 02 Feb 2009 22:19:39 GMT)
My Husband and had been trying for a little over 6 months. Finally we got our BFP last week. I'm searching for Short Term Disability Insurance and I was wondering if anyone knows of any company that offers it. I know Afflack does but that's an employer sponsor plan. I started my new company almost a year ago, but they recently decided to stop offering Short Term Disability and unfortunately I'm left out with no insurance. My corporate office had told me to wait and see if could negotiate a good rate with a company but today I spoke with the lady at my office and she said to start looking. Now, I'm worried that because I'm already pregnant they wont accept me! Do you know of any companies I should try out? I live in Texas (Dallas) I looked into that with my Doctor (at her office) and she said Texas does not cover it.

Resolved Question: Can someone help me find a car for struggling families?
(Mon, 08 Dec 2008 00:19:26 GMT)
I am living with my girlfriend who has 4 children, two with special needs. We are in desperate need of a van or SUV, something we can comfortably move 4 kids around in. I have a small compact car which I'm borrowing. We both work, but we have poor credit. Were in need of a vehicle but we can't get a loan, even if I could I wouldn't be able to afford car insurance on it because of laws of carrying full coverage on financed cars. Does anyone know of a service that helps struggling families find cars in North Texas? She will be getting child support and disability for one of the children in January. I lost my job and I am looking everyday. We can't afford a car payment and need help finding a service that helps out struggling families. Thanks for your help! In response to Firebird: The reason I'm in this predicament is because I just went through a nasty divorce where I have to pay a lot in child support. I don't receive any money from the government. She does because her a-hole ex husband makes 80k a year but can only pay her $500 a month, which is less than what I pay and I only make $25k a year. I am taking on a second job AND enrolling back into school. I do have to sleep to keep my sanity. I'm not stealing, I'm trying to help her out. Also, I'm being evicted from the family that I'm staying with for personal reasons and I can't survive on my own with my income the way it is. All I'm looking for is a little help for her. Some "civilized" people don't own cars, so that is a stupid statement. My lifestyle isn't an issue because I don't eat out ever, I don't drink or smoke or use drugs, I don't rent movies, I have the basic of basics. Back off on the married crap, were are both divorced, IF I married her I would have to pay for her kids (cont.) I "was" married and supported a family with two kids, but the ex has my kids and I pay out the ass, so obviously your misunderstood my question and took it in a whole other direction. I'm just trying to help my GF out because my car won't hold 4 children. Her idiot ex is so far in debt that he is losing a house and both cars, and she foolishly trusted this military moron. Regardless dude, I work, she works, were doing the best but I was hoping for a response from someone who knows of charitiable services, private services that will help her get a larger capacity vehicle. Oh yeah, and yes you can have "poor credit" and still be struggling. Again your way off...

Resolved Question: Where does one turn, when disabled in Texas on fixed SSD income, when your utility bills almost double?
(Sat, 09 Aug 2008 07:44:30 GMT)
What I have found is, that unless you have minor children at home there is no help available. In my situation I was barely making ends meet between rent, utilities, necessary car expenses and medical costs not covered by medicare. Now in the last 6 months gasoline, food and both NG & electric rates have risen beyond my ability to cope. What I is in the very few places that do help...is they have set income levels so low and the other requirements so high that the average disabled person can not qualify for any help at all, unless they get evicted and are in the street literally with nothing. I fall undr the qualification for SSA disability. I do not own $2000 in any kind of assets. My car isn't worth more then $500. But my monthly disability is above what SSI pays ($623). Right now my rent is $650 Electric is running close to $300 Gas about $25 to $30 Water, trash sewer min $68.60 (and I try darn hard to stay under min) My isp is the cheapest I can find at $9.95 My phone is $58.97 once they add all the taxes on. And that is my only non-necessity...I do not have cable tv or even own a tv. Don't have a cell phone. Don't have DSL. I don't go out to eat or to the movies. Can't afford recreational activities. My car insurance is $53 a month...for bare min liability. Have to have a car, as there is no public transportation out in rural Texas. And nothing is within walking distance, especially with my back problem. So car is an absolute necessity for medical and grocery needs. I fill the tank ( all 9gals) once a month. This is what has to go out before I eat or buy my medicines. I have to have a/c in this heat...otherwise my asthma kicks in, then I am in real trouble with more meds to buy & possibly ending up in the hospital. When it was still cold...I had to have enough heat to keeping from hurting all the time. Only heat the house to 72 and shut off all rooms not in use. Barely made it thru the cold season this year. Believe me I conserve where ever I can. Only run 1 flurescent light and my pc at anytime. Live mostly in the kitchen or the bedroom. Close everything off when not in that room. So where does one turn, when you hit the wall and can't cover the electric bill this month? This is making me crazy. I have called churches....either don't have any funds to help or have requirements I can't meet. Called the 211 line... income limits are so low it isn't even funny. Can't qualify for food stamps...income is a few dollars above the max allowed in Texas. Please son't be telling me I should move somewhere cheaper. Moving takes cash in hand...way more then I have available at any time. Already did that last year, this place was the cheapest I could find in a safe area to live. And this is farther out then I would like to be. Was lucky to find this place when I did. Rents in rural Texas are no longer as cheap as they were even 5yrs ago. So any truly constructive suggestions out there? Thanks in advance to those willing to share. I am plum out of ideas myself. Closest homeless shelters are about 60 miles from here. No money to buy gas to go there and back just to see if they can help.. They won't tell you anything on the phone....have to go in person and sit around for hours just to get the answer. I referanced the $623 as what SSI pays... that is the basis (maximun) used for getting help in Texas. I specificly said I recieve SSD not SSI. I have just over $1100 & yes I am short every darn month now. It amazes me how some people do not read what is written or they read into it what ever they want to see. Things do not work the same in Texas as they do in other states. Texas could care less if you starve or go homeless. If I were back in Calif. I would have access to an abundance of help. Not so here. If you are above the SSI rate of income for Texas you qualify for nothing. Belive me I have applied for anything that I could find.. turned down every time.

Resolved Question: Does anyone know how someone who needs surgery, but has no money or insurance can get help?
(Wed, 30 Jul 2008 20:46:57 GMT)
I have a friend who has been out of work for over 3 years and is in desparate need of a hip replacement. I took her to the emergency room because she had twisted her hip and was not able to walk and they said she needed the surgery asap. I have tried everything and I am out of solutions for her. She lives in Texas and has gotten disability but she wants to work and be able to walk again. If anyone knows any options to help she would be thankful.

Resolved Question: Could I get a lawyer to help me answer this?
(Fri, 06 Jun 2008 14:28:50 GMT)
I am an honorably discharged, disabled American veteran. My disability rating is 70% but I receive 100% benefits due to unemployability. All of this is concerning the State of Texas. Please keep in mind that this is NOT the entire story. My daughters were living with their mother and others many of whom were drug users and alcoholics. They were in a dangerous and neglectectful situation and I wanted to get them out. I tried the court but I didn't have the money to hire a lawyer as my rating was not as high as it is now. I tried going to the city and county, but everyone assumed that I was a disgruntled ex and did nothing about the situation. The only recourse I felt that I had was to stop paying child support. I chose to do this ONLY because the money wasn't going to take care of them anyway. Food stamps were feeding them, the State was providing medical insurance and the only time they had better clothes was when I bought them. There was no rent or bills to be paid by my ex as she was living with her mom and step-dad. I did not stop providing for them, I just stopped providing cash to their mother and the rest. I stopped paying it in hopes that someone would pay attention and get me the help I needed. They certainly paid attention... They put me on probation for 10 years and labeled me a deadbeat dad. A few months later my ex showed up and left the girls with me while she disappeared to South Texas. I had no problem with that as I was getting what I wanted. My girls were living with me. I went to the state and sought help due to the fact that I could not afford to pay child support (which I had been maintaining since the court put me on probation and refused to hear me out) and support my children at the same time. Finally, I found someone who would listen. I told the woman the entire story and she gave me a stack of paperwork to fill out. She told me that the paperwork would cease the child support order until we went back to court, and it would help me get custody of my girls and hit my ex with a child support order. I filled out the paperwork and turned it in the next business day. The woman told me, after she looked it over, to stop paying my support immediately and their office would take care of the rest. A few months went by and I heard nothing from them. I would call every now and then but they would only say that they were working on it. One day, my ex showed up and wanted the girls back and informed me that she would be moving to South Texas with them and that they wouldn't tell me where they were living, effectively canceling my visitation rights. I called the state office again and told them what was going on and they told me that I had no choice but to give her the girls, but that they were still working on my situation. In the midst of all of this, I had met a woman online and had fallen in love. I chatted with her every day and we got along really well. Things were going well between us. At one point in time, it became apparent to me that I would not get to see my girls again, as I was not even sure where they were at the time. The state was doing nothing and life without my daughters was not great. I went to my probation officer and asked him if I could have his permission to visit her, as she lived out of the country. He worked it out with the State Attorney General's office and I left with the intention of returning in 2 months. Our relationship was really good, and good for both of us and as I still didn't know if I would ever see my girls again, I asked him by phone if I could just stay. He worked out a deal with the State Attorney General's office which gave me permission to stay out of the country IF I would pay my support and pay up the back dated support. They didn't care about the other situation, as long as they got the money. I made a verbal agreement with them and gave them a fax number to send the paperwork to, so we could legalize it. They never sent it. Over the next few months I called them many times to get them to send the paperwork because I didn't want any more troubles with them. I even tried to get them to send it to the American Embassy here, but they never did. I didn't have an attorney, but I'm not stupid. I was not going to start working on a deal without signatures. In April 2007, I received a letter from the V.A. telling me that the State of Texas had issued a warrant for my arrest and called me a fugitive felon and as a result they were going to stop my disability payments if I didn't fix it with the State. I called the State again and made yet another deal. This time I didn't wait to have it in writing. As per the deal, I send $1,000 to them for back support out of my next check and they were supposed to erase the warrant. They admitted to me on the phone that they made a mistake, but they would have to have some gesture on my part to make it right. So I sent the money. A couple of days later, I called to confirm that they had received it, and they had. The

Resolved Question: Help with back pain, cortisone shots/surgery/physical therapy..ect.?
(Thu, 01 May 2008 18:33:21 GMT)
I was diagnosed with a disk protrusion two years ago (L-1/L-2 vertebra). Since then I’ve had two cortisone injections, physical therapy and a diskectomy (sp??) where the Dr. surgically trimmed off the portion of the disk that was protruding. It did feel better for about a month but started hurting again. Since then I’ve had another MRI which showed that the disk has collapsed, another cortisone injection and no relief. It has actually gotten worse since the last cortisone injection to the point that I have a hard time walking, can’t sit for more than 30-45 minutes, can’t pick up my daughters, and now have a sharp pain running down my right side when I stride out while walking. I’ve spoke to my Dr. about a Tens Unit and will be getting one shortly, he has also recommended two more cortisone injections (a week apart), and we have ruled out physical therapy as it seemed to have little to no effect. Now for my questions: 1.Would it be worthwhile having two more injections? The last one did help relieve the pain but it only lasted about a week at best, and the pain is much worse now than before. 2.I am thinking about filing for disability, it’s been two years since I was able to work (5years as a Paramedic, Two years as a Lab Specialist), as I can’t perform my required duties because of the pain. I’ve been told that it’s very hard to get any type of disability for back pain, is this true (I have MRIs that show the damage, along with medical records for the treatments and medical visits)? 3.I am also thinking of trying to file for a handicap sticker until I get either the problem fixed or the pain managed (I am now having a hard time just walking thru the local Wal-Mart parking lot these days!!). I am in Texas and can’t find any info online with the state giving the requirements and guidelines for handicap stickers. 4.Are there any other ideas that one might have that cold help with the back and pain issues? I really don’t want another surgery if I can avoid it, I’ve also found that soaking in a hot-tub helps more than anything but that just isn’t an option financially and I don’t think that my insurance (while very good (Tri-Care, military) would be willing to shell out the cash for a hot-tub to make my back feel better!! I love em, but I don’t think they love me as much to be willing to do that!! I’ve tried cortisone shots, physical therapy, surgery, soaking in hot water, using one of those bath spas, resting, exercising, prayer, chiropractor, massage therapy, dancing in the rain.. You name it I’ve tried it!!!! I’m hoping maybe someone might have other ideas.. Any help on any of these questions would be most appreciated. Thanks for your time and help.

Resolved Question: Illegal Debt collection practices ?
(Sun, 13 Apr 2008 23:06:55 GMT)
I do not have medical insurance. I have a chronic illness that puts me in the hospital a lot. I can't work because of it. But, because I haven't work enough to acquire enough credits, I can't get Social Security Disability. Because I can't get that, I can not get Medicaid to help with my medical bills. I had over 1 million in medical bills when I filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. It was discharged in 2000. Now, I have a lot more bills that I can't pay. One collection agency -West Asset Management located in Georgia keeps harrassing me over an $18,000 bill I owe a hospital in Texas. I have explained the situation to everyone that calls. I have sent 6 letters via certified register return reciept requested mail, requesting that they have no further contact by phone wih me. my husband, my children, my neighbors, etc. I have the reciepts where someone signed for 4 of the letters. But, they continue to call - often 6 times a day at my home - they even call neighbors, etc

Resolved Question: I want to SUE?
(Fri, 14 Mar 2008 02:57:22 GMT)
I bought a 1990 4 Runner on Nov 25th,07 for $2,500, I got the title & bill of sale. On Nov. 26th I went to get the title transfered into my name only to find out that the person I bought it from never took the time to transfer into his name. The seller has lied to me and jerked me around. Last month my teenage son totaled it and now the insurance can't pay me for it since the title is still not in my name. I also found out last month that the only reason this guy had the vehicle was because he put a mechanics lien on it, so the owner signed it over to him. I am a single mother on disability and am not having to go to churches & such for food, because having to pay car rental while we try to get this straighten out. Can I take him to court and sue him big time, not small claims. I want to go after him for all of the distress he has caused me and my kids, plus reimbursement for the car rental and what I paid for the vehicle, plus what I had put into it for repairs. In Texas. As far as him jerking me around. He would tell me he would meet me at DMV to get it taken care of wouldn't should, ignored my calls as to where he was, etc. I even made a hour drive one way to his work because he told me he finally had the corrected title(meaning title in his name) and he was a no show. I'm on disability for depression and disability, he has not helped that at all.

Resolved Question: how much taxes are they going to hold out of my check?
(Wed, 20 Feb 2008 06:31:34 GMT)
I just got a new job making $41,000 a year. All of my insurance is paid for so they will not hold out anything for health insurance. I will probably have dental held out which will be about 15.00 a month or so. I might have short term disability held out as well for about 7.00 a month. They will also be holding retirement but I am not sure how much. I live in texas and was wondering if some one could tell me about how much taxes they are going to be holding out of my check. I am thinking about claiming 1 which is me. I have no kids, single, and not married. Just want an estimate. My monthly gross would be 3416.00 a month and I will be getting paid every 2 weeks. any ideas?

Resolved Question: Can you collect disability for not being able to work due to bipolar complications?
(Sun, 03 Feb 2008 01:08:38 GMT)
Hi. My girlfriend has just been diagnosed with Bipolar disorder (she was hospitalized). She was a home maker for several years in a previous marriage and hasn't been employed over the last few years. Additionally, she had no medical insurance, but is now getting help via medicaid. She is also pregnant... so working is tough. Can she collect disability in the state of Texas? How do you go about looking into this? Not sure where to start... Thank you for your answers!

Resolved Question: Nephew has mental disabilities and issues. Social Security Questions.?
(Sun, 23 Dec 2007 21:27:36 GMT)
My nephew has been diagnosed with bipolar and Autism. He is having extreme difficulties in school and is in need of physiatrist visits on a regular basis. We have fought for his rights in the school system and have gotten him into a school program that will help him with the issues but doesn’t provide a physiatrist. We live in Texas. He isn't an angry person just an unhappy person. He is getting older and we feel that these issues must be worked on before he enters high school. He can't get insurance because he has a previous mental condition and the social security office told his mother that he can't get social security disabilities to pay for the phyc visits because she owns a house and car. I don't feel that this is neither right nor correct. What can we do to get this child help?

Resolved Question: Why can't the rest of USA do this Social Security Alternative Already Working in Texas?
(Mon, 03 Dec 2007 04:35:08 GMT)
The personal retirement plan sketched out in President Bush's State of the Union Address has been universally derided by Democrats as an unworkable privatization of the retirement program. "As we fix Social Security, we also have the responsibility to make the system a better deal for younger workers, and the best way to reach that goal is through voluntary personal retirement accounts," Bush said during the address Wednesday night. "Here is how the idea works: Right now, a set portion of the money you earn is taken out of your paycheck to pay for the Social Security benefits of today's retirees," Bush explained. "If you're a younger worker, I believe you should be able to set aside part of that money in your own retirement account, so you can build a nest egg for your own future." President Bush warned the nation that 13 years from now -- in 2018 -- Social Security will start paying out more than it takes in. He also had a message for Americans 55 and older: "Do not let anyone mislead you;" he said: "For you, the Social Security system will not change in any way. For younger workers, the Social Security system has serious problems that will grow worse with time." Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said on Wednesday that all 44 Senate Democrats were united against the president's plan to reform Social Security. Without knowing any details, Reid told reporters, "President Bush should forget about privatizing Social Security," adding, "It will not happen." But privatized Social Security has been a fact of life for municipal employees in Galveston County, Texas, for nearly a quarter century. Local government workers voted overwhelmingly in 1981 to opt-out of Social Security in favor of a locally controlled system that has since been widely described as a phenomenal success. Under federal law at the time, municipal workers had the option of not participating in the Social Security program, replacing it with private retirement accounts. The private system is subject to regular payroll deductions and employer matches, essentially mirroring Social Security tax withholding and employer match provisions. "There are a number of [county employees] that are strong advocates and say it's really a very, very good, solid, strong, financially and fiscally strong program that is for the benefit of county employees far in excess of what Social Security would be," Galveston County Legal Department Director Harvey Bazaman told Cybercast News Service. Under Galveston's "Alternate Plan," the county withholds approximately six percent of each employee's salary for retirement. That money, along with a partial match by the county, is invested in personal accounts for each participating employee. The remaining county match covers the cost of disability and life insurance policies for employees, which also pay benefits much higher than those offered by Social Security. While the employee-employer funding formulas are nearly identical under both Social Security and the Galveston Alternate Plan, the results are very different. The U.S. Treasury Bonds purchased with money from the Social Security "trust fund" pay approximately two percent. But for the period from 1982 through 1997 the rate of return on funds invested in the Galveston plan has averaged 8.6 percent, a return more than 400 percent greater than Social Security. Data from First Financial Benefits, which administers the Galveston Alternate Plan, shows that county workers earning slightly more than $17,000 a year can retire at age 65 with a monthly payment of $1,285 compared with $782 a month under Social Security. Due to having more money withheld and the effects of compounding interest, higher income employees in Galveston see even larger benefits under the Alternate Plan. Workers earning $51,263 a year could retire at 65 with a monthly benefit of $3,846, while the same worker participating in Social Security would receive $1,540 each month. Even the relatively low "guaranteed rate of return" in the Galveston plan roughly doubles the rate of return for Social Security. Funds already invested in annuities have a guaranteed yield of 3.75 percent, according to Bazaman. As for money being placed into private accounts today, Bazaman said the rate is slightly higher at 4.24 percent. "They have never lost money. They have gone through double recessions in the 1980s, recessions in the 90s, and a tech boom and bust in the 1990s and into 2000," said Charles Jarvis, chairman and CEO of USA Next-United Seniors. "They've gone through another recession, an attack on this country and wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, yet they have steadily provided income for people." The Galveston County, Texas Alternate Plan enacted in 1981 with the approval of 78 percent of local employees proved popular locally. By 1983, local government workers in three nearby municipalities -- Brazoria and Matagorda Counties, and Texas City -- also voted to quit Social Security in favor of

Resolved Question: I reappled for long term & short term insurance at work and once again was denied. Is this LEGAL?
(Tue, 24 Jul 2007 22:05:45 GMT)
A few days ago, I received my letter denying me long term & short term insurance coverage. The letter stated, "As you know, the insurance you are applying for is medically evaluated and certain health standards must be met to be eligible for enrollment. Another review has been made of the insurability applications you completed. Based on your condition of insulin dependant diabetes diagnosed 1989, it has been determined that our original decision to deny Short and Long Term Disability insurance coverage cannot be changed. Other pertinent health history includes high blood pressure and acid reflux." The letter goes on to state I have 90 days to appeal this decision. I must say I HAD this insurance and dropped it shortly after starting at The State of Texas. Does this mean I will never be eligible or should I fight this with an appeal? I can brag and say I don't call in sick (very often) and do a great job at work. I work 13 hour days and have a 2 year old son!!!!!!!!!

Resolved Question: Doctor Bills, Insurance or Cash, Should they be forced to take both?
(Wed, 09 May 2007 01:55:00 GMT)
I moved to Las Vegas a year & a half ago from Texas. I am legally blind and have been a diabetic for the past 4-years. I work live most people do and do not receive any government assistance for my disability. When I finally found a doctor that would accept me, that I liked & that was close to my home, I made sure that he knew I did not have any insurance and that I would be paying him in cash for his services. He understood & accepted me as his patient, gave me a check-up, I paid the bill in full, got my meds and went on my way. Well, I called him today to get a re-fill on my meds and some blood work done as he had asked me to do when my meds were about to run out. Without notice or an explanation, his receptionist told me that, I could not see my doctor, as they no longer accept patients that don’t have insurance. Am I missing something here? I’m not a new patient; my bill was paid in full from last years visit, I never ask for a discount. Do you think that was right?

Resolved Question: How will getting married to an ill person for ins., with lrg. medical bills, effect me if the worse happens?
(Wed, 14 Feb 2007 17:05:16 GMT)
My boyfriend whom I love very much, is ill. He does not have insurance or a job. We live in Texas, so we could very easily be common law married. If something were to happen to him, will I end up having to pay his medical bills? Will this effect the disability he is receiving from the US government?

Resolved Question: I need a LOAN to make repairs on my home. I own my home outright but my only income is disability.?
(Sun, 04 Feb 2007 07:35:35 GMT)
Is there a special program for people like me - government or otherwise? My bank will not make me a home equity loan because they say my income-to-debt ratio will be too high. The "energy efficiency" program offered to low income people with older homes has a 5-8 year wait in my part of Texas. Hurricane Rita affected my roof - but not enough for my home-owner's insurance to cover. State Farm said my roof was already over 15 years old and probably needed to be replaced anyway. They also said that the damage was not severe enough -just multiple leaks but no shingles torn off. I need a NEW ROOF most of all, especially before there's anymore damage inside my home. Does anyone know where I can turn for a loan or a grant? Thank you, Terri

Resolved Question: I'm 30 years old, should I file for bankruptcy?
(Mon, 27 Nov 2006 10:09:45 GMT)
I have about $30,000 in debts. Mainly from credit cards dating before 2002. I used to pay my bills on time, however, in 2002 I was diagnosed with a disabling illness and fell way behind on my bills. I no longer am able to work and have been on Social Security Disability Insurance for 6 months now. Would it be worth filing for Bankruptcy? or should I just wait till the "7 year reporting period" from creditors have passed, and not file? I really want to improve my credit rating ASAP! Also, I live in California and I'm planning on moving to Texas very soon. IF I should file for BK, Should I do it in CA or TX?

Resolved Question: Where is the best state and city in the US to live, if one has no insurance but has some medical problems?
(Mon, 10 Jul 2006 12:48:59 GMT)
Also, no disability insurance, but enough income to live comfortably if careful with money? Not enough money to purchase so-called 'high-risk' insurance, but enough to buy needed medicines for a chronic condition, the kind insurance companies refuse to issue policies because of? I know that Texas is NOT the place, but it's where I live, and I'd like to move without making more mistakes. Somewhere nice for older, retired folks would be a boon.

Resolved Question: Where Can I Find A Dentist That Would Donate Their Services?
(Thu, 29 Jun 2006 21:14:02 GMT)
I live on San Antonio, Texas, and I live on disability. I had had cancer, beat it, but now I need some restorative dental work done. I don't have dental insurance, and I have constant pain with my teeth. I need 4 teeth to be extracted, and get a set of dentures. I tired the local dental school, but their not taking applications right now. I've tried a couple of local dentist(for instance Dr.Crouch) but they want $ 2,000 to $ 4,000. I certainly cannot afford that. All I want is a nice set of dentures, by a dentist that knows what they are doing, and that don't look as though they were made with Sculpey Clay. Know anyone like that? I've already tried, they would not take any apllications right now We did have a kind of dental clinic called Affordable Dentures; but the closed down the location here in town
