Voting Question: Can medical settlement be amortized over years?
(Wed, 25 Aug 2010 20:01:17 GMT)
I worked for over 40 years and had to retire early because of total disability. I was receiving a monthly check from the insurance company for my former employer. The insurance company (Unum) contacted me last year and offered a settlement based on my salary and the number years I would have had to work before I retired. We took the cash settlement because we had so many bills to pay (my husband is retired). The settlement put us in a higher tax bracket. I know I should have had taxes withheld

Resolved Question: What is the best ER in the NYC area to go to when you don't have health insurance & suffer from depression?
(Sat, 14 Aug 2010 12:32:46 GMT)
I had lost my job this past May the day after my Short Term Disablity benefits were exhausted. I lost my psychotherapist, my mental health and chemical dependancy group therapy program, as well as my primary care physician and physical therapist. I have been stalked by the disability insurance carrier my company used, UNUM, to go on Long Term Disability, but I do not feel too comforted when speaking with any of their reps that it would benefit me at all to go on their plan. I did not saving

Resolved Question: Disability Insurance Regulations, or good sources for reading about them?
(Sat, 26 Jun 2010 21:40:01 GMT)
My mother has recently been having problems regarding her short term disability insurance, and I am wondering about the regulations on such insurance policies, because for what they are doing to be legal, it makes no sense.
Here is the situation. My mother had disability insurance at her old job, which worked her until she had a breakdown and is mentally incapable of working (seriously, totally incapable). So the company pays out her benefits after putting up a bit of a fight, fine. But now s

Resolved Question: Long Term Disability payback (Is it legal)?
(Sat, 17 Oct 2009 22:38:24 GMT)
I have a Long Term Disability (LTD) claim with Unum through my work. Prior to becoming disabled, pretax money was deducted from my paycheck for this LTD insurance. They have been paying me ~$2,000 / month for two and a half years. I applied for SSI disability around the same time I submitted a claim to Unum. Unum starting paying me about 6 or 7 months after I became disable. I was recently granted SSI disability and SSI sent me a check for “back pay” (about $32,000) and started paying me about

Voting Question: Can your employer "OWN" your medical records?
(Sat, 01 Aug 2009 19:34:26 GMT)
I recently had surgery for chronic diverticulitis in which I had 18" of my colon taken out. My "Previous" primary doctor didn't fill out the documents correctly for me to get my short term disability in which I was Denied and I fought with Unum Provident on why I was denied and had surgery a week later. I requested the documents that they based their decision on and they got back with me and said, "No, we cannot give your medical records as we asked your employer and they are denying me my rec

Resolved Question: Unum is telling my Mother that she owes them backpay? LONG Question, 10 points for BA!?
(Tue, 21 Jul 2009 04:23:05 GMT)
My Mother had Long Term Disability coverage from her employer (that she paid a premium for, every paycheck for years) managed by Unum.
In January of 08, she developed Addisons disease that was so severe she couldn't work. Later in 08, around July when she was medicated enough to function - she realized that she should apply for benefits from Unum.
They paid her 60% of her pay on a Short Term Disability claim in one lump sum for the amount she would have earned from the onset of her disabili

Resolved Question: is it legal to fire someone on state approved short term disability?
(Fri, 20 Apr 2007 17:54:32 GMT)
was in outside sales. w/ documented depression (not faked). company kept contacting me about doing paperwork so THEY can say i'm on disability - i "had" to get approval from their insurance company UNUM. my doctors were not as diligent as i wanted them to be and they missed a deadline, so the company said that because i missed this deadline, i was terminated as my leave could not be substantiated by UNUM. (1) should they have even been asking me to do all that ? especially since i WAS ALREADY
