Open Question: I have a bankruptcy question, odd situation. I tried to stay out of bankruptcy for 20 years, but because of?
(Sat, 19 May 2012 22:52:52 GMT)
failing health and my house falling into disrepair, I think I have no other option. All my debts are credit cards, about $40K.
Important points: 1) my brother, who lives in another state, owns half my house here in Oregon; 2) he has also helped me stay afloat with little personal loans; 3) I am on SS disability of $1600+ per month, no savings, no stocks or retirement; 4) my house payments are $880 on a $100K balance; 5) I have no luxuries, like cell phone, cable/satellite tv, high-speed inter

Open Question: Can a legal seperation be used to manage a planned bankruptcy?
(Fri, 18 May 2012 15:28:58 GMT)
I'm a married father of four kids and I'm currently on an organ transplant list. So far I'm healthy enough to keep working, but in the next few years I'll be too sick to work and need to get a transplant.
My condition is genetic, so I started saving for it when I was 18 and currently have $35,000. But since I'll miss two or three years of work, plus the out-of-pocket costs of the transplant, I'll likely have over $150,000 in debt when I'm able to go back to work. I have no other real asset

Voting Question: If you get injured and have long-term disability insurance............?

supposedly,
you can continue collecting income for the next 40 years........

Providing: You are unable to return to work.
Question: Is that rule, that if you are able to return to work, you must do so.....
is that rule strongly enforced? Realistically, if someone recovers from their injury, can they continue collecting without getting busted? How exactly do they enforce this? Who decides if someone can return to work? How often do th

Resolved Question: How should I feel about my girlfriend being in my opinion way too close to her mother?
(Sat, 12 May 2012 21:05:32 GMT)
Ok, so here's the scoop. I'm 28, she's 29, we're lesbian and have been together for like a year and a half now. I work full time and pay for most everything since I have a better paying job and she works for 12 bucks an hour at a daycare center. That in itself is stressful to me because I have to do the most to stay afloat. I myself do not have a family to fall back on in case times get tough and have learned at an early age to take care of myself and solve my own problems but I can't solve th

Resolved Question: With SS, do people on Disability get changed to Retirement when they hit 66/retirement age?
(Wed, 09 May 2012 21:31:25 GMT)
My hubby read that somewhere. He turns 66 in January. I know retirement SS pays less, so I'm curious if he's right. (I can't find what he saw.)
Added question: Anyone know how much of a dip we're looking at? Maybe a rough percentage? I know you can't tell specifically, but he's talking a 1/4th-1/3rd dip, and he's the one bringing in the "big bucks" between the two of us, so it will hurt.
(And try not to fixate on "tightening your belts" or "Why are you both disabled?" I've been disabled long

Resolved Question: Concurrent Receipt? (Military Disability)?
(Thu, 03 May 2012 14:04:21 GMT)
I was medically retired from the Air Force last year. I was rated 90% by the VA and 30% by the Air Force.
I did receive my first retirement check but after VA kicked in I haven't received a check yet. My understanding is that concurrent receipt takes effect at 50% disability. But does that go by PEB/MEB rating or by VA rating.
At the time I was being discharged I was told I'd be receiving both checks. Does anyone know if I should be?

I am disabled waiting for my social security disability to go through. My ex wife thinks I am not paying all of my child support. With my long term disability check I am making 50% of what i was making.
I was given my ex wife the checks every month. All of a sudden she won't take my checks and wants me to pay the office of recovery services. I have written them a check over 3 weeks ago. The check has not been cashed. They are trying to research why the check hasn't not been cashed yet.

A lot of people support the so-called Buffett Rule. But a lot of folks don't. But I have my own thoughts on it.
I can see both sides of the issue and I have a counter proposal. I call it the Buffett Rule 2.0.
I propose a 3% added federal income tax. Every person who lives in the US, and every person having American citizenship and living outside fo the country, pays the new tax.
No matter what you income tax return looks like, if you have more than $1,000 in income, any income of any kind,

While I was teaching money was taken out of our paychecks every month to go towards retirement instead of Social Security. Because I had to retire early I receive a smaller amount of money every month than I would have otherwise but it is still considered "retirement".

Resolved Question: New welfare reform policies?
(Sat, 14 Apr 2012 00:53:33 GMT)
There are scores of federal bureaucracies that deal directly with welfare. I think that we could save billions and provide more benefits by coalescing these wasteful offices into a single government office. (Social Security being an obvious exception, since it provides various other services in addition to benefits) We could do away with Medicare as it is currently known, eliminate Medicaid grants to states and encourage states to end their Medicaid program. In the place of these programs, we

Resolved Question: What happens to a TSP loan when you medically retire (90 day repay, non pay status, or something else)?
(Mon, 09 Apr 2012 12:55:21 GMT)
My husband is medically retiring from the Army soon and we are strongly considering taking out a loan from his TSP. Ideally we would leave the money in there, but it is not feasible at the moment. Due to his injuries the two of us together are unable to make enough money to bring in what he was making in the Army with BAH and BAS factored in. Once he gets the rest of his disability money from the VA, we will be fine, but until then we don't have enough money to pay rent and put food on the tab

Resolved Question: What happens if a person is on disability then gets off it right before retirement age?

If my understanding is correct, SS retirement is calculated based on the BEST 35 working years (highest earnings) and then averaged.
If a person becomes disabled and goes on SSDI long before retirement age, that person is not penalized for those lost working years.
Ok, all is good. However, what about some pour soul who loses their disability at the 11th hour, ie right before retirement age. How are that person's retirement benefits calculated - do they get penalized for all of their lost
