- Resolved Question: Do the young voters supporting Obama know what his raising taxes will cost them?
(Sun, 04 May 2008 22:39:26 GMT)
Individual retirement account :
Tax increases to fix entitlement shortfalls hurt younger workers more than older ones. Yes, those close to Social Security's retirement age will also pay higher payroll taxes â?? for a time. Younger voters will pay more for a lot longer. Not only is the Baby-Boom cohort of retirees in the Baby Boomer generation, medical progress ensures that they will live to riper and riper old ages. And yet the Boomers want the same benefits offered to seniors when they were footing the bill â?? despite the

- Resolved Question: Retirement savings risks?
(Wed, 20 Feb 2008 13:56:46 GMT)
Individual retirement account :
What do you think the risks are regarding shifting demographics and retirement savings? It has been noted recently in the news that people are having to borrow from their retirement accounts in order to make ends meet in basic needs, often at the risk of having to pay heavy tax penalties for not being able to pay it back. Do you think that given the profound economic leverage certain industries (i.e energy)exert on the world economy, and the increasingly heafty amount available in 401Ks puts

- Resolved Question: Self-employed individual- how to keep my savings tax-exempt.?
(Sun, 03 Feb 2008 03:09:33 GMT)
Individual retirement account :
I just learned the hard way this year about how not to manage one's money when self-employed... $4,000 in taxes on $16,000 in income... yeesh.
So aside from better record-keeping for 2008, what's the best program for keeping the money in my savings account tax exempt- that is, the money I am saving up for retirement? I put about half of my gross income in a savings account this year, but lost a good deal of it in my tax return.
- Resolved Question: Best savings account for self-employed individual?
(Sun, 03 Feb 2008 02:56:23 GMT)
Individual retirement account :
I am looking to open a savings account this year, and was wondering what the best starter account for my budget would be. I am very frugal and save about half of my gross income. So, here's the stats: I'm 26, self-employed as a Pilates teacher in NYC, live with my boyfriend, and make $12,000 gross income every year. I'm also a full-time student, and have an expected contribution of $400 per year.
Should I stick with my current (basic) savings account, or look into a CD? I want to start
- Resolved Question: Why not make housing payable with pre-tax dollars?
(Sun, 27 Jan 2008 05:13:30 GMT)
Individual retirement account :
Currently, you can set aside $$$ pre-tax for certain things: Medical, Dental, Travel, Retirement, etc...
So, if I am in the 25% tax bracket and I set aside $100 a month for medical expenses, I am essentially setting aside $125 a month.
Why doesn't the government set up a government-run 'business' that allows people to put $$$ into an account, then once the business receives the funds, they will pay it towards the individual's mortgate? (similar to a government-run financial recovery system: I

- Resolved Question: Should a married woman have a separate account?
(Mon, 05 Nov 2007 18:42:55 GMT)
Individual retirement account :
Should a married woman (or man) have a separate savings account (or investment vehicle) from any joint accounts that they may have with their spouse? I read this somewhere and I thought it was interesting. The premise of the article was that a woman needs a separate account to establish her good credit and to have money in case she needs to leave her husband. I'm just wondering what others think of this.
This applies to non-retirement accounts. I certainly think each member of a marriage

This is for my retirement fund. The more I read about retirement (lack of cash flow vs inflation, especially), the more I want to build as large a cushion as possible. I really feel for kids today (by saying kids, I mean anyone from 0 years old to mid lifers who haven't started saving yet), as there's no one actively looking out for their welfare. Social Security was a mistake, but the Feds should actively encourage people to vigorously save on their own. If I were king, I would propose ma

There are 76 million baby boomers going through major financial crises and there about 176,000 of us who are qualified to help them. Because of this, retirement age has now adjusted to age 67, going 70. If we won't help resove this issue, we might end up at age 75 or more and still working because we cannot afford to retire. (Wed, 28 Mar 2007 00:30:16 GMT)
Individual retirement account :
I recently took an early retirement due to health issues. For the last 9 1/2 years that I was working I was depositing $50.00 a month into a 401K Plan. I realize that this is not a very large amount per month. However, over these 9 1/2 years I have only managed to gain approximately $2,000. Whether this is due to the small amount of money I contribute or the ups and downs of the stock market (probably both) it is rather discouraging. Now that I am retired I am allowed to roll over my 401K
