Open Question: What is a good retirement gift for my dad?
(Thu, 02 Sep 2010 02:36:14 GMT)
my father has decided to retire from his job as a lawyer after nearly 40 years. Me, my wife, and my sister and her husband all want to buy a nice gift together and we are unsure of what to get him. Price/money doesn't matter, we just want him to love it. Any ideas?

Resolved Question: Going back to college at 26?
(Thu, 26 Aug 2010 06:41:17 GMT)
I am wasting my brain. I did terribly in high school but only because I hated the mundane curriculum. I graduated, of course, and have taken several college courses and excelled in them,
My Achilles heel has always been math. I just don't have the mind for it. My creative writing professor told me I had a gift and he didn't seem like the type to just say that to anyone. That is what I truly want to do. I want to earn a degree in English lit with a minor in creative writing, teach Englis

Resolved Question: Is it worth it to become a neurosurgeon?
(Mon, 23 Aug 2010 00:41:09 GMT)
I'm pretty young to be thinking about my career and all, but neurosurgery fascinates me. I spoke to a family friend currently in residency to become a general surgeon and he laughed when I told him about my aspirations and told me I probably couldn't do it, considering the approximated 15 years of prior rigorous education and training in addition to the fact that the process is highly selective and I'd have to be the at the top of the class to do it.
My family agrees that I'm nuts for wanting

Resolved Question: What should I do about underwater home - mortgages?
(Sun, 22 Aug 2010 18:01:15 GMT)
I live in SW Florida where I owe $335,000 for a house surrounded by homes forecloure specialists are enjoying profits from selling at $125,000 (in much better condition than mine), and at least another thousand brand new unoccupied homes nearby. Flood insurance just became mandatory and rates went up.
I bought in '06, it was the best I could get then, but in very poor shape compared to the quality of currently available homes. It would take another $20,000 just to make it marketable to sell f

Voting Question: Why shouldn't I draw from my 401(k)?
(Sun, 22 Aug 2010 01:25:23 GMT)
First off, I absolutely agree that you should put money into their 401k if your employer will match your contribution. That is like free money.
I also recommend leaving it in if you aren't capable of saving for your future. I'm not trying to sabotage my retirement. I have faith that I won't be struggling to survive when I reach retirement though.
So here's my reasoning behind pulling my money out. I'm looking for flaws in my logic because I don't pretend to know all the details about it.

Resolved Question: Is this a financial/investment scam? So, i had a meeting with a "financial planner" that I met through?
(Tue, 10 Aug 2010 19:05:01 GMT)
met him through a friend. He first asked what my retirement/money making goals were. Then he began to speak about referring people to his company and that I could make money from that working in a part time capacity as i would be "my own boss". After I mentioned that I would probably not be interested, he began talking about investing/asset allocation and stuff like that. I noticed that he had a giant superbowl type ring on his finger with the name of the company on it. Obviously a gift given

Resolved Question: Giving a $200K gift in one year and receiving $12K gifts in subsequent years?
(Thu, 10 Jun 2010 17:08:23 GMT)
To avoid the whole mortgage and/or rental property process, we would like to give our daughter $200K to buy a condo. I know we would have to file IRS Form 709. Since this is part of our retirement income she would then gift us $12K every year for the next 20 years. Is this allowed or would the IRS insist it be treated as a loan and suffer all of its consequences - interest income, etc?

Resolved Question: Why do most muslim parents consider their daughters as their 'retirement investment'?
(Wed, 09 Jun 2010 14:08:17 GMT)
in islam, a mahr is a monetary gift paid by the groom to the bride's parents. in middle class families this is around $20k and in upper class families it can be upwards of $1 M. most of the time the parents will choose the man who is able to pay the most dowry (i.e. an older established man ) this is the reason why young girls are married off to older men because parents don't really care about their daughters life. she is basically just sold to the highest bidder. do you think this is fair?

(Wed, 02 Jun 2010 03:00:47 GMT)
Giving a group retirement gift to my daughter's teacher. Most families donated money but not all. If I sign the card in general from all the families is that appropriate or should only those who gave money get their name included and leave out those who did not? My plan was to sign it from all the 2010 families. Those that did donate I think would be o.k. if all were given credit. It doesn't feel right to exclude someone especially if they couldn't afford to donate.

What keeps your heart beating when you are on the road? Anyone have a motorcycle?

Resolved Question: should i accept money as a birthday gift?
(Sat, 24 Apr 2010 15:34:54 GMT)
okay, so my mom's friend gave me $100 for my birthday! I was all happy, but maybe a few days later, I felt bad.
My mom's friend is in retirement, and I bet she needs the money more than I do.
The money was in a check form.. and she mailed it to our house.
Now, i feel like not accepting it because i feel bad, mom's friend needs the money more than me.
Well, she lives kind of far away, but we can drive there.
So should i accept the 100 dollars ? But i have that guilty conscience, though.
