Voting Question: How do I set up a Roth IRA in my twenties?
(Sat, 13 Mar 2010 11:29:00 GMT)
I'm a part-time student and a part-time food service worker in my early twenties. I make about $12,000 to $14,000 a year. I have absolutely no savings whatsoever, and very little knowledge on the subject. I'm considering opening a Roth IRA to start saving for retirement. Anybody have any advice for me? Is it easy to set up? How much should I contribute? Can I put as much in whenever I want, or is there a minimum you have to contribute? How is the interest rate determined? I'm sorry to ask so many questions, but I'm really quite confused on the subject! Any advice would be appreciated. I also have a question about 401k plans, if anybody can help me out with that, too! http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Aplt8J4Df3e8__.hOjmxf4bsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20100313023709AAG9Mhi

Resolved Question: I don't love my boyfriend, but I can't tell him because I'll break his family's heart...?
(Wed, 03 Mar 2010 21:44:14 GMT)
My boy friend loves me, I'm sure, but... I don't... He doesn't even talk to me at school or hang out with me. And he quit P.E. to join football after we agreed how much we hated that sport and stuff, but I can't break up with him because his parents and big brother are so proud of him for getting a "cute, smart, nice" girl like me. I don't want to break their hearts, though I'd love to take my boyfriend's heart and stomp it into the ground. He says he's going to have two boys *with me* and then go off into the military, though I don't see how, because the only reason he's actually passing the eighth grade is because he looks over my shoulders in class and copies. Plus, he's planning on leaving the *boys* with me until he gets back from *retirement*. I can't help but get the feeling he's taking advantage of me... Any advice?.... :'(

Resolved Question: Some career advice..?
(Tue, 02 Mar 2010 12:53:16 GMT)
Here is the situation, a lot of things have been happening fast, and I'm stuck at a crossroad. College is coming up real soon, and at this point I'm confused on what I should go in for. I'm constantly back and forth between teaching (always been what I wanted to do) and going into business (I studied this all throughout high school, and even a little bit on the college level). I under with teaching, it's low paying, but rewarding, and I have to complete anywhere from 4-6 years of school to find a job. With going into business, I can continue working for the company I do now and move up into management (making for $100,000 annually), I don't really have to go to college, but I think it would help me out to at least get a associate degree, or maybe even a bachelor's degree one day. I'm very conservative, so I don't really like taking risks, with going into teaching I consider that a risk, because 4-6 years of school can get expensive, and it's not promised I could get a job as a teacher, then I would be stuck. With staying where I am at now, I could retire 7-8 years before I could teaching, it's a secure job, and I believe I have what it takes to move up into the management position. What would you do in my situation? I know it's a weird question, and I know I'm too young to be thinking of retirement, but I've always been a planner, I can't stand doing something without a direction of which it might take me. I typically always have a back-up plan. One reason why I am more shifted to stay where I am at now is that I could maybe even go into some kind of business venture myself. I've done numerous projects in school where I had to write a business plan, or something of that nature. It's always been somewhat of a dream of mine to open a restaurant of my own (I love to grill, and I love bbq, so I would open a bbq restaurant). I'm not looking for a smart-a response, I am looking for some advice, maybe someone who has traveled down the path I am looking at now. Thank you in advance.

Resolved Question: I need advice from restaurant owners...?
(Mon, 01 Mar 2010 15:57:33 GMT)
So, my dad wants to own his own sports bar. He's 45. He's the VP of a logistics company (24 years) and he's sick of it. He's opening the restaurant in hopes that he can live off of the income and build a retirement for himself. Lucky for him, my husband is unemployed with a culinary degree so he plans to have my husband run the kitchen for him. Is there anything we're being naive about? Everything is moving so fast. I don't want to see my dad run this place into the ground because he doesn't know what he's doing. We're a family that gets along great so I don't foresee any problems there. I've seen the show Kitchen Nightmares and so have my dad and husband so we are aware that not all restaurants make it. Please, any advice you can give would be helpful. Thanks!

Resolved Question: 2 weeks pregnant with 3rd child; my partner doesn't want it?
(Sat, 27 Feb 2010 16:29:40 GMT)
My partner is the only one who works in our family right now. He's 44, I'm 38. He says he's too old and cannot afford another child and that we should terminate the pregnancy because in his words it will put too much stress on our relationship and life. He wants to provide our 2 children with a good education and he says having a 3rd child might compromise our plans. Plus he thinks this will means he'll have to work past retirement age. Being religious, I am against abortion plus I am concerned about the medical risks or delayed effects to my body internally. But I don't want to jeopardize our marriage. Any advice? Have some of you never heard of a positive pregnancy test?

Resolved Question: I'm 26 and looking for some opinion on my saving/investment history to see if I am on the right track...?
(Thu, 25 Feb 2010 00:32:19 GMT)
I am 26 years old and have about $50,000 total invested. Its all money I've earned working since I turned 18. These are my main investments I've done, the rest I've held in cash. Last year I invested $9028.89 in the stock market with the idea to hold for one year and sell and then evaluate my performance. I had never done stock market investing before so I saw it as a learning experience. After one year I sold my stock and got a profit of $521.66 which came out to 5.8%. I also have money invested for retirement and have two accounts. $8000 invested in account #1 earned $1,337 which comes to a 16.7% increase over 5 years $9103.19 invested in account #2 earned 3,990.18 which comes to 43.8% increase over 7 years So am I doing OK? My plan is to continue to invest in the stock market and eventually buy a apartment to rent out. Any tips, advice, or suggestions?

Resolved Question: How has your TSP worked out for you in the military and any advice?
(Fri, 05 Feb 2010 02:29:40 GMT)
Husband and I recently started up our TSP. We're 23, and he's 1 1/2 years in and plans to go the full 20 to retirement. We started the first few months all in the safe G fund since the economy sucked, and now have switched it all over to the Lifecycle 2040. Currently we have about 2300 in the account with 114 going in monthly. I was curious how other military members faired with the TSP over the years. Make money, lose money? It's a little hard to make recommendations with differing economies, but any advice to us? I also would like to start up a Roth IRA, but know nothing about them. How much to put in each month? What's the return? Any info would help really.

Resolved Question: Questions about a future career in Medicine?
(Tue, 02 Feb 2010 01:22:39 GMT)
I am currently a sophomore in high school and am my ambition is to attain a career in the medical field, but I have some questions concerning preparation for Med school and Pre-Med. - What sort of science classes should I focus on in for the next two years of high school? (I am currently enrolled in chemistry, and plan to take physics in my junior year and human anatomy and physiology as a science elective in my senior year, but I am also considering adding in an AP science course to my senior schedule.) -What sort of extra curriculars would colleges be most interested in for a student applying for a science major or pre-med if possible. (currently in mock trial and speech competitions, but joining debate next year, and wish to apply for summer volunteering at hospitals or retirement facilities.) -I am currently enrolled in geometry B and am taking alg II/trig C my junior year, and pre-calc my senior year, but would it be advisable to take alg II/trig over the summer so I can take calculus my senior year? (should I get a leg-up on calculus before entering college?) -What other classes should I be focusing on that may help me in the future? (i.e. would you advise studying up on bio chem and organic chemistry in my free time?) -Final question ( please excuse my long explainations, I am a bit wordy : / ) Have any of you gone to med school or have taken pre medical classes, and can you share you experience with me? (how difficult is it, and advice?) Thank you. :)

Resolved Question: How can I contact a Bureaucrat in the DC area via email in order to interview them?
(Mon, 01 Feb 2010 23:21:04 GMT)
I have a new assignment in my government class that requires me to interview a Bureaucrat by sending them questions through email. How can I contact a Bureaucrat in the Washington DC area who works for one of the 15 cabinets or their sub-agencies? I need a response within three-four days. This is the survey- Name of Your Agency: a) Is it a part of a larger body or department? Title of Your Position: a) How did you get your job with the federal government? b) What educational credentials do you possess? Number of Years Working There: a) Have you held any previous jobs in the federal government? Location of Office: a) Have you worked for the federal government outside the Washington Metropolitan Area? What work does your particular office do? What specifically do you do on a day-to-day basis? What is the more general mission of the larger agency of department you work for? What aspects of your job do you find the most rewarding or appealing? Are there any frustrations you have as a civil servant? What negative stereotypes exist about government employees, and are they at all based on reality? Do you have any direct of indirect contact in your job with the political appointees? Do you plan to continue in the civil service until retirement? Have you ever regretted your decision to work for the federal government or considered private sector? How would you compare the positives and negatives of government employment versus employment in the private sector? What advice would you give a recent college graduate considering employment with the federal government?

Voting Question: Why would they encourage retirees to spend every dime?
(Mon, 01 Feb 2010 18:28:10 GMT)
http://finance.yahoo.com/focus-retirement/article/108713/the-spend-every-penny-retirement-plan?mod=fidelity-readytoretire How in the world did this become good investment advice? They are basically advising retirees to spend every dime of their retirement savings. That now it is becoming "increasingly popular" not to leave a legacy to family and to spend every last dime on country clubs, fancy dining, and cruises? I understand when you are retired you should spend some money on yourself...but why are they encouraging retirees in the middle of a recession to not save for the future and to spend, spend, spend??? What if they sick? What about medical bills? Is the economy so bad they are trying to bankrupt retirees so they will spend their money instead of hoarding it in the bank?

Resolved Question: Starting my retirement portfolio at 22 years old?
(Tue, 26 Jan 2010 18:55:14 GMT)
I'm 22 years old and with the money I'm now making I'm ready to start contributing $5,000 annually into a Roth IRA. I have been looking at Vanguard, but I would like to know who you would recommend for me and what type of funds I should invest in? I plan on retiring in about 40 years or so (age 60-65) with comfort. Any advice would be very much appreciated!

Voting Question: Tax advice, what do I need to file my taxes?
(Mon, 25 Jan 2010 03:33:44 GMT)
I don't know what paper work we will need to file our taxes this year as many things have change for us this year. I am now a full time student with no job, I recieved a Pell Grant that paid all my tuition and I also took out a subsidized loan, my husband is unemployed and has been drawing unemployment for all of 2009, he also cashed out his Edward Jones retirement plan early on in 2009 because we needed it so bad, we have two children. Can someone tell me how this will affect out return this year and what we need to take with us when we go to file. I wanted to file my taxes myself through the free e-file, but I fear it my be to complicated. Mostly I need to know how my loan and Pell Grant and the retirement money will affect things.

Resolved Question: Military divorce questions...?
(Thu, 21 Jan 2010 22:11:21 GMT)
The office at JAG is closed for now, but I plan on making an appointment asap. So, I was hoping for the best info I could get before I consult an attorney. Husband is Army E-4 with 7.5 years in, no articles 15's. DC BAH is around $1790. Been married the last 4.5 years of that. I am legal resident of Maryland, his is Hawaii or home of record is in Montana. No kids. Neither one of us cheated. He called it irreconcible differences. We have always had separate checkings and savings account, retirement funds, etc. Only real debt is car @$7750 left. He plans to have me move out of the residence at the end of March since his LPN at Walter Reed starts in early May. He plans for us to sign a legal separation agreement at end of March since in the state of MD, a couple must be legally separated for a year before they can get an absolute divorce. MD says it is an equal distribution state. SO, question is how much is he required by law, if any, to pay me in support? We'd still be legally married until April 2011. He says I will get my health & dental insurance still and that he will pay me $700/month and pay the car off & put it only in my name(will be around 1.5-2 years left in payments). He's been planning this for so long and knew so many of the laws, and it came as a shock to me when I thought we were about to just have a serious talk about the relationship. He says we are not happy and not fair to one another to stay together. I have gone through a series of emotions. Even when I got to the point where I started getting mad, I was using a normal tone of voice, but asking very direct questions. Last night he just threatened to take away some of the monthly $budget. I want it to work out, but he's already made up his mind and only has to wait due to the law. He does not want to go to marital counseling. Renting a room here to keep my job in a high cost of living area, is a tough choice since hard to find another job. My family is in Alabama so I'd probably move back there. I make only $14/hr here & once I did find a job in AL, it might be only $12/hr. I currently work as an 1:1 aide at a private school for emotionally disturbed students and also have experience with autistic spectrum disorder. What legal suggestions and tips do you have? Thank you for your time in reading this and offering advice.

Voting Question: Need some help please I'm confused?
(Tue, 19 Jan 2010 06:13:42 GMT)
I was married for 24 + years with 2 grown kids, as far I remember we fight and have many disagreements all the time about priorities in hour relationship but instead of her to listen how I felt about being and doing everything with some one from her family she became offended and her way to settle everything was buy hitting me and calling me all kinds of names and treat me with divorce or separation, month a go I decide to take her proposal and ask her to either buy me out or give her 50k and leave, by the way she never contribute with a penny for the mortgage or for bills, she by me out and got piss off because I ask her for half of her retirement plan and treat me for spousal support, so I tell her to go for it an do whatever make her happy but now that I file for divorce and start the process to buy my own house she's realizing that she really love me and regret for everything she did and that she hopes thinks work out, I still love her but I'm not putting up with her raising the hand on me and push me to do the same. P.S. at 51 and married for almost 25 and dedicate most of the time to my kids I'm still inexperience about life and need some advice, thank you

Resolved Question: What should i do in this matter?
(Mon, 18 Jan 2010 08:13:36 GMT)
i just got married with my husband on dec 2009 and just for your info, we have known each other for a little over a year before we got married. I realize that after a few weeks into the married life, i found myself crying and upset of his attitude and so called maturity. i found out that he did not pay 3 years of taxes ( which i consider a lot for a sufficient person ), but he has a new motorcycle, ducati, a flat screen tv and made plans about re painting the whole house. isnt it crazy? i also found out that he declared bankruptcy because he has a lot of debt? i am shocked to find that he doesnt have any savings at all, no savings for retirement or for emergencies and anything like that. i am worried. i think i chose the wrong guy. i want a kid, he wants one but i don`t think he can ever support me physically and mentally with this kind of attitude. I have already talked to him many times and i gave him his own space to think about it ( because i know most men don`t like women who are too controlling ) but he never do anything to improve this attitude and he never tell me how he feels, what he thinks, what`s our plan next and whatever. he prefers to watch the TV than to spend sometime and talk with me,. what should i do? i am considering a theraphy or counseling. i don`t like being in the situation where i may be in a difficult situation ( which may be prevented before that happens ). I have my own money (saved up since 6 years ago) for emergencies, i have a steady job and most importantly, i have faith that everything will work out fine. please i need some advice. serious people only.

Resolved Question: Anyone got good finical advice?
(Sun, 17 Jan 2010 23:03:35 GMT)
I'm 19 and just starting out in the world. (I plan to go to college eventually, but it's not realistic for me right now.) Are there any books I could read to get myself prepared for handling my fiances? I've been good with saving money, but I know there are tips and tricks for people who understand the system. Right now I live in an apartment in NYC and am 100% independent of my parents (finally! It took 1.5 years to be able to support myself.) I literally have a savings account and a checking account. No retirement fund, no health care (as of yet), no credit score, no stocks, ect. I know there are tons of books/web sites/whatever to get started on this stuff. Any one have any good suggestions to point me in the right direction? In this economy, every penny counts.

Resolved Question: Should I put it in savings, invest it in retirement savings or pay off the car?
(Tue, 12 Jan 2010 12:56:23 GMT)
I got a bonus from work that is almost $6,000. I bought a car in April so the bulk of my monthly payment is still interest. The current pay off amount for the loan is just under $7,000; I would need to take an extra $1,000 out of savings to completely pay it off. My payment is about $200 a month, so it would only take me 5-6 months to pay that amount back to the savings account. Plus, I'd save $1000+ in interest over the next 4 years. If I put it in savings, I'd only be earning 1.75% even on our money market account. However my husband will only be able to work part time this summer because he's in grad school. Our income will be reduced by about $800 a month. If we can't make the monthly bills, it would be nice to know the extra money is there so we don't have to dip into our emergency savings. The third option would be to put it into my IRA. My husband has a 401K which we contribute to monthly. I have an IRA that I only contribute to when we have some extra money an/or we need the tax deduction. This is the first year we will not have a child to deduct, so we may need it. My husband and I are 50 and are planning on retiring in 12-15 years. It would really ease my mind having the money in the bank, but I know that's not where I'm going to see the highest benefit, so that's probably the least likely option. I love the idea of paying off the car as I think that will probably give me the "highest return" for the money, even over the IRA at this point. But I really need to wait and see what our tax liability is going to be. Anyone have some advice as to what would be the best option?

Voting Question: Need advice for saving for retirement?
(Tue, 12 Jan 2010 02:07:08 GMT)
I'm 41 years old and need some advice with planning for retirement. Until 5 years ago I had been pretty much living paycheck to paycheck. I now have a better paying job and have been able to put some money aside and save. With an inheratiance I was able to put 25% down on a house in San Francisco. I currently make about $45k/year Have $7000 in a ROTH IRA (500 Index) which has been loosing money $15,000 in a saving account earning 2% $5,000 in a 3year CD earning 3% My car is paid off and I have no debts aside from my house. I'm wondering if I should just continue to put money into my savings or CDs or should I continue to put money in my IRA?

Resolved Question: Was GW really the idiot President?
(Fri, 08 Jan 2010 23:55:46 GMT)
If George W. Bush had been the first President to need a teleprompter installed to be able to get through a press conference, would you have laughed and said this is more proof of how he inept he is on his own and is really controlled by smarter men behind the scenes? If George W. Bush had spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to take Laura Bush to a play in NYC, would you have approved? If George W. Bush had reduced your retirement plan's holdings of GM stock by 90% and given the unions a majority stake in GM, would you have approved? If George W. Bush had made a joke at the expense of the Special Olympics, would you have approved? If George W. Bush had given Gordon Brown a set of inexpensive and incorrectly formatted DVDs, when Gordon Brown had given him a thoughtful and historically significant gift, would you have approved? If George W. Bush had given the Queen of England an iPod containing videos of his speeches, would you have thought this embarrassingly narcissistic and tacky? If George W. Bush had bowed to the King of Saudi Arabia and the Emperor of Japan, would you have approved? If George W. Bush had visited Austria and made reference to the non-existent "Austrian language," would you have brushed it off as a minor slip? If George W. Bush had filled his cabinet and circle of advisers with people who cannot seem to keep current in their income taxes, would you have approved? If George W. Bush had stated that there were 57 states in the United States , would you have said that he is clueless. If George W. Bush would have flown all the way to Denmark to make a five minute speech about how the Olympics would benefit him walking out his front door in Texas , would you have thought he was a self important, conceited, egotistical idiot. If George W. Bush had been so Spanish illiterate as to refer to "Cinco de Cuatro" in front of the Mexican ambassador when it was the 5th of May (Cinco de Mayo), and continued to flub it when he tried again, would you have winced in embarrassment? If George W. Bush had mis-spelled the word "advice" would you have hammered him for it for years like Dan Quayle and potatoe as proof of what a dunce he is? If George W. Bush had burned 9,000 gallons of jet fuel to go plant a single tree on Earth Day, would you have concluded he's a hypocrite? If George W. Bush's administration had okayed Air Force One flying low over millions of people followed by a jet fighter in downtown Manhattan causing widespread panic, would you have wondered whether they actually get what happened on 9-11? If George W. Bush had failed to send relief aid to flood victims throughout the Midwest with more people killed or made homeless than in New Orleans , would you want it made into a major ongoing political issue with claims of racism and incompetence? If George W. Bush had created the position of 32 Czars who report directly to him, bypassing the House and Senate on much of what is happening in America , would you have approved. If George W. Bush had ordered the firing of the CEO of a major corporation, even though he had no constitutional authority to do so, would you have approved? If George W Bush had proposed to double the national debt, which had taken more than two centuries to accumulate, in one year, would you have approved? If George W. Bush had then proposed to double the debt again within 10 years, would you have approved? So, tell me again, what is it about Obama that makes him so brilliant and impressive? Can't think of anything? Don't worry. He's done all this in 11 months -- so you'll have three years and seven months to come up with an answer.

Resolved Question: Too late for making 401K Contribution for this year (2009)?
(Wed, 30 Dec 2009 16:08:48 GMT)
Only two days left for the year to conclude, I have never made any 401K contributions so far for this year. Infact I am thinking about retirement plans for the first time and my employer have offered me this option few months back. I know that max pretax contribution that can made for 2009 is 16500. Should this amount be contributed before the end of the year or before i file taxes for 2009 ie (April 2010). I just realize that if I had maxed out my 401k contribution I would have saved around 2K on taxes! Please advice

Voting Question: On the unemployment line - need financial advice?

Need advice - Should I sell or retirement? Help - Sell? Or Retirement or What? Maybe there are some people who went through a divorce who can help me. I have two grade school kids. I went through a divorce that ruined my credit when my husband left for another woman. He is a high powered lawyer and I couldn't afford one so he is paying minimum child support, less than the mortgage. I then lost my job. I have looked for another one for 7 months. I am over 45 and over educated so I can't even get a job at Sears. I need some financial planning advice. I have a home worth $250,000. The mortgage balance is $120,000. An apartment with two bedrooms in my area is $500 per month more than mortgage. I can't get an apartment because of my credit and no job. I have $50,000 in my retirement account. Question: Should I take out my retirement? It would help me pay the mortgage and expenese for three years. I would have to hope that I have a job or some business by then where I have income. I could sell the house but then where would I live? Maybe there are solutions that I do not see. I can't see. I have condidered suicide. I really need some guidance here.

Voting Question: Help with this math problem please?
(Sat, 19 Dec 2009 01:33:35 GMT)
Your brother, Eric, has asked your advice on creating a retirement plan. He is 35 years old, earns US$60,000 per year with average raises of 3% per year, and plans to work until the age of 65. His company offers a 401(k) plan with matching contributions of up to 6% of his income that has been earning an average of 8% per year. Your brother is very active and loves to travel. After retirement, he plans to travel the world and be very active. He is unsure how to plan for retirement, does not understand the different retirement investment options, and needs your help. Individually: Develop a spreadsheet that shows how much Eric can expect to have in his retirement account when he turns 65 if he begins depositing 10% of his salary now. As a group, prepare a presentation for Eric that explains how to plan for retirement, common retirement investment options, and the tax implications of each investment. Using the spreadsheets prepared by individual team members, explain compounding, the time value of money, and the importance of retirement planning and investing. Make a recommendation to Eric about his retirement account. I have no idea how to set this problem up.... please help...

Resolved Question: Military officer planning full retirement at 45 need advice?
(Wed, 16 Dec 2009 13:33:34 GMT)
First off thanks for reading and helping out, I'm not much of an experianced investor. A little about me, I'm 20 I signed on as an enlisted marine at 17 and have been selected for mecep which is a program that enables an enlisted marine to serve at a civillian college earn his degree and then be commisioned as an officer. So I am not an officer at this time but it is my abitious goal. I have decided to invest 30% of my income into 3 funds, retirement, home, and general. I plan to retire at 45 with my military retirement and investments carrying me through. I know I cannot rely soley on an ira being that I cannot use that money until I am 60 to 65. I need an investors advice I know the basics of investing and the thought of paying ever rising capital gains tax on that large of a sum of money worries me. Thanks again, and semper fi.

Resolved Question: What are the things you should discuss before marriage?
(Fri, 11 Dec 2009 13:49:08 GMT)
Me and my fiancee are getting married next October. We have discussed children (we both want them, a few years after were married, and I will be a stay at home mom, as we both feel a traditional family structure is the best way to raise kids). We already have a pretty seamless financial plan, which we worked out before we ever moved in together. It has worked well for us for years, is changeable as life changes, and is fair to both of us. We have also discussed how finances will change after we have kids and I stop working. Neither of us have any debts, we paid for college as we went (which took much longer to finish), we paid for our shared car cash, we haven't bought anything ever on credit, and we don't have credit cards. We set up a high yield savings account a few years ago, so we have a good chunk of money waiting for a down payment on a house when we're ready for one. We both carry health insurance, have car insurance, and renter's insurance. Our wedding will be small, and we can more than afford to pay for it up front, without having to make payments. We have discussed our individual future goals, and touched on the subject of a retirement fund. We work out our disagreements respectfully and productively and never ever go to bed mad (a bit of advice from my parents, who have been happily married for 37 years). I think we have the big issues in life covered, finances, children, future goals. We're going into this debt-free, so we won't have to worry about that. We love each other, and we can work through anything life throws at us (we started dating when we were both at the lowest points of our lives and worked up from there together, which wasn't easy, but we made it). We just wanted to hear some advice from both sides, those who have been happily married for years and those who got divorced. You can learn as much from other peoples mistakes as their successes. This is a HUGE step for us, and we want to make sure in the remaining months before our wedding to iron out anything else that may become a big issue later on. What other types of things that we haven't discussed should we before we tie the knot? Thanks :-) We do know things change and don't always go as planned. But we just want to start out with a good framework so we can build on it and focus more on a happy marriage than stupid little things. On the subject of religion and children (or in general), he was raised in the Potters House (a Christian church), and I was raise Catholic. Both of us lost all faith in going to church over the years. You don't have to sit in a building with a hundred other people on Sunday to find God, pray or have faith. Both of us believe that. Our children will be raised on that basis, and if when their older they want to attend a particular church, or become a particular religion, that will be their decision.

Resolved Question: What professional do I ask for this?
(Fri, 11 Dec 2009 04:26:23 GMT)
Husband and I own one home and are upside down, can't get help due to we are not in a hardship situation, I want advice on that to see if we have any options open to us...we still need to re fi soon or mortgage will go up. Also, would like to buy a 2nd home in my name only since everything else is in my husbands name, need advice on that. Also wondering if the fact that we usually file taxes jointly will hurt me getting approved by myself for a home, or if we should file separate (we still have that option) and if that would be better for us. Financial planners seem to be mostly about retirement planning & funds investing...or are they? Is there one professional to help me with all these questions? Or do I have to search around separately?

Resolved Question: Is this being hypocritical?
(Mon, 07 Dec 2009 18:17:19 GMT)
If George W.. Bush had been the first President to need a teleprompter installed to be able to get through a press conference, would you have laughed and said this is more proof of how inept he is on his own and is really controlled by smarter men behind the scenes? Bush had bowed to the King of Saudi Arabia , would you have approved? If George W. Bush had visited Austria and made reference to the non-existent "Austrian language," would you have brushed it off as a minor slip? If George W. Bush had filled his cabinet and circle of advisers with people who cannot seem to keep current in their income taxes, would you have approved? If George W. He's done all this in 5 months -- so you'll have three years and seven months to come up with an answer.

Resolved Question: Did Obama really do all of these things?
(Thu, 03 Dec 2009 22:15:36 GMT)
I received an email that began with "IF George Bush would have..." it goes on on to detail a long list of undesirable actions for a president. Then at the end, it says that Obama actually DID these things. Here is the list, can anyone tell me if any or all of this is true? If George W. Bush had been the first President to need a teleprompter installed to be able to get through a press conference, would you have laughed and said this is more proof of how he inept he is on his own and is really controlled by smarter men behind the scenes? Resolved Question: I need good advice on my relationship...?
(Tue, 01 Dec 2009 17:35:04 GMT)
I have been with this guy on and off for 6 years. We went to High School together (we are now 26 yrs old). We started out as best friends, nothing romantic...but as time would have it, we started dating..We partied a lot together, but it seemed to work because we never fought and both loved to drink. Well then I decided I wanted to go to College...I stopped partying and he didn't...We split up after 3 years together. We both started dating other people, but ended up cheating on our partners with eachother..After a year of all that, we got back together again...But he still in my opinion was just too irresponsible for me.. I love him soooo much and its hard for me to leave. I know that we break up because his lack of motivation.. Now as it stands 6 years later, I have a Bachelors degree and I am self employed. He still works the same construction job with no health benefits or retirement. And has no education beyond high school. I just feel like he hasnt progressed. At the same time, I have tried several times to see other people who are more close to my education level, and ambitions..But I cannot get past that guy. I even found someone else who was educated, serious about his goals in life and a good person....AND wanted to marry me! I left him for the guy that wont change. (the guy I was with for 6 years, still lives with his mother at 26 yrs. of age) I dont understand why I cannot move past him. I thought that time and age would heal this, but It hasnt. I still feel the same, I would marry him tomorrow. I would live with him tomorrow... He does want to be with me too, he tells me all the time that he wants to be with me...But he doesnt really have a 'plan' and a stable job...it scares me... Should I just accept him for the way he is and stay....OR leave?? I dont know what to do..All I know is that I can't make the feelings go away...After 6 years, they are still very strong...

Resolved Question: what would you do in my place?
(Thu, 26 Nov 2009 12:58:02 GMT)
It's a long story, I'll try to make it short. I love my boyfriend and we want to marry this year. We both have a bit same situations although still not very similar. I'm doing my PhD and want to quit and start a new career path. My bf has been very supportive to me in making these important decisions. He himself does not have a higher education, earns money playing poker in Internet and still doesn't know what to study. He started a distance education in IT recently and told me yesterday that he doesn't have any motivation and is considering to study Psychology instead which is more related to poker and seems to interest him more. He is already mid 30s and is yet afraid that he may find Psychology not his major as well later on. But he seems sure this is what he wants to do now and my approval is important for him. He is smart, I would say, way more intelligent and than some other men with education. He also has a nice personality, very humane, patient - a cool guy. The only thing that makes me confused is that he seems to take life lightly (or does he?). He sais that poker may become no more popular which might make him work for lower wage later on. What makes me wonder is his retirement plan if he still doesn't enter the job market. What if he quits in half a year again saying that Psychology is not for him. I would love to stay by him and support his attempts to realize himself, but what if he is just hopeless and will stay like this forever wondering what he wants to do? I really don't know what to do now? I don't want to lose him because I feel myself very well with him, he is still the best man for me. But those "red flags" keep questioning our future... I would really appreciate your advices on this. Thank you. What if he assured that financially we won't have any problems?

Bush had failed to send relief aid to flood victims throughout the Midwest with more people killed or made homeless than in New Orleans , would you want it made into a major ongoing political issue with claims of racism and incompetence? If George W. Bush had created the position of 32 Czars who report directly to him, bypassing the House and Senate on much of what is happening in America, would you have approved. If George W. Bush had ordered the firing of the CEO of a major corporation, even though he had no constitutional authority to do so, would you have approved? If George W Bush had proposed to quadruple the national debt, which had taken more than two centuries to accumulate, in one year, would you have approved? If George W. Bush had then proposed to quadruple the debt again within 10 years, would you have approved? So, tell me again, what is it about Obama that makes him so brilliant and impressive? Can't think of anything? Don't worry. He's done all this in ten months -- so you'll have three years and two months to come up with an answer. Momma- you bring good points. however this "obama" guy preeched that he would not do spending unless it was needed. Has that been the case? Thank you.

Resolved Question: If George Bush was an idiot than how do you feel about this?
(Mon, 16 Nov 2009 12:45:15 GMT)
IF GEORGE W. BUSH WAS AN IDIOT . . . If George W. Bush had been the first President to need a teleprompter installed to be able to get through a press conference, would you have laughed and said this is more proof of how inept he is on his own and is really controlled by smarter men behind the scenes? If George W. Bush had spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to take Laura Bush to a play in NYC, would you have approved? If George W. Bush had reduced your retirement plan’s holdings of GM stock by 90% and given the unions a majority stake in GM, would you have approved? If George W. Bush had made a joke at the expense of the Special Olympics, would you have approved? If George W. Bush had given Gordon Brown a set of inexpensive and incorrectly formatted DVDs, when Gordon Brown had given him a thoughtful and historically significant gift, would you have approved? If George W. Bush had given the Queen of England an iPod containing videos of his speeches, would you have thought this embarrassingly narcissistic and tacky? If George W. Bush had bowed to the King of Saudi Arabia, would you have approved? If George W. Bush had visited Austria and made reference to the non-existent "Austrian language," would you have brushed it off as a minor slip? If George W. Bush had filled his cabinet and circle of advisers with people who cannot seem to keep current in their income taxes, would you have approved? If George W. Can't think of anything? Don't worry. He's done all this in ten months -- so you'll have three years and two months to come up with an answer. Joshua C- read answer below you. And no the point that you are missing is beyond me. The point is that people rode Bush hard for his mistakes he made. They really did. Why are people not for obama? You even did it yourself making fun of bush for the marbles in mouth. Why is the public not insulting obama the way they did to bush? Im not saying bush did not make mistakes. But he also did not create this "change" theory of spending money wise and end up going against it. Sorry to burst your bubble but you had wasted a lot of time writing what you wrote. Plus the guy below called you out. Better luck next time and thanks for backing up a president who has us in more debt than the last 200 years of presidents.

Resolved Question: There's rumors about the USD being over-valued, yet my investments are fine. Shall I convert to EUR?
(Tue, 10 Nov 2009 11:19:09 GMT)
I invested €150 within a retirement plan as follows: 30% America Fund (USD) 30% China Focus (USD) 40% European Aggressive (EUR) http://www.fidelity-international.com/pricing/docs/mt/index.html There are rumors that the USD is overvalued, yet, my broker cannot give me advice whether to sell or convert my funds to EUR although he suggests I should "wait and see" (indirectly). What would you suggest?

Resolved Question: Do most physical therapist assistance have high job satisfaction?
(Sun, 08 Nov 2009 01:19:56 GMT)
Hey all, I'm 28 and considering getting a A.A.S. in PTA. I currently hold a BS in Exercise Physiology and I formerly held the CSCS NSCA credential (I plan to get both the CSCS and CPT from the NSCA in the near future). I have worked as a personal trainer which I enjoyed but the money just wasn't stable and there where no benefits or retirement. I also worked 3 years as an ES physical education teacher which was alright but dealing with 30 five year olds in a gym can become tiresome. I currently work as a case manager for mentally ill adults and enjoy the one on one interaction, although the stress to pay ratio is leading to burnout (not to mention my part time job and graduate school). I'm currently enrolled in a school counseling and development graduate program and have completed 22 of 45 credits, Although I'm starting to think it was a poor decision. At the moment I'm taking a career counseling course and all the assessments I'm taking point to physical therapy. I also have a strong feeling that it would be something I would enjoy and do well. I would like to work with disabled veterans supporting them in their recovery. I'm sure many of you will suggest getting a DPT, although I don't have the money, time (4+ years with prerequisites), or intelligence to earn such an advance degree. I doubt I would get into a DPT as my undergrad gpa was 3.16 with average to below average scores in science. Although my graduate school course work in counseling is close to a 3.8-3.9 range. I like the idea of being a PTA versus a PT as you get to spend more time with the clients during their exercise routine. My only concern is that the pay may not be high enough. Although I always have the option of working part time as a personal trainer. I have looked at USAjobs.com and it appears that a PTA can make about $55,000 a year in the DC area after they have obtained some experience. What it really comes down to is that I'm happy with my profession and will stick with it in the long run. Any advice, resources, or suggestions are greatly appreciated. FYI about 5 years ago I shadowed a Physical Therapist for approximately 76 hours.

Resolved Question: Should I pursue a CFP or CFA?
(Sat, 07 Nov 2009 05:12:56 GMT)
I would prefer to help individuals with things like retirement, investing, and estate planning, etc. rather than dealing in corporate finance. I would also like to stay in my hometown, where there are not many corporate headquarters. However, I have read that CFP jobs basically boil down to sales jobs. And I do not like making sales. I would not mind recommending a good product to a client; but I've also read that alot of CFP jobs are commission-based and often require hunting down possible clients. So, my question is, is there any way to use a CFP that doesn't require so much entrepreneurship (and finding one's own clients, etc.)? Do banks in non-major towns ever hire CFPs and the like to give their clients retirement advice, etc.? Is there such a thing as a CFP that's more than just a salesperson? Is there any use for a CFA where there are no corporate headquarters? Considering the information I provided above, which certification would work best for me, and how might I use it?

Resolved Question: Do I have a chance to get into anything like Harvard, Stanford, etc.?
(Thu, 05 Nov 2009 01:08:36 GMT)
I'm 13 and at the moment I'm starting to plan ahead for my future. I want to become a professional at anything medical. The problem is, report cards just came home and I do not like what I am seeing. I've been a straight A student (taking extracurricular classes like jazz band, big band, have done things like GATE, and had chances to join something called Odyssey of the Mind but I couldn't which I will explain later) up until now. As an 8th grader, I attend at a high school to take two of my classes which are Honors Geometry and PE (this is why I can't do any after school activities at my middle school). I take the rest of my classes at my middle school. I have and A or A+ in everything else but Honors Geometry. In Honors Geo, I have a B+. I plan on raising up my grade, but right now I have a 3.33 GPA just at the high school. With my classes altogether, I have a 3.83 GPA. Right now I am stressing out about this. In high school, I do plan on joining leadership, link crew, the volleyball or badminton team, a jazz/marching band, and I plan on joining some sort of science Olympiad thing and I plan on creating some kind of club that supports an organization called the Innocence Project. I also plan on doing a lot of community service (helping out the mentally challenged or caring for the old at retirement centers). I am excellent at writing (we use rubrics at our school and I usually score 4.5-5 out of 5 on various pieces). I also plan on taking all of the AP and Honors classes that I can. I'll take Algebra II over the summer this year so that when I get into my Freshman year, I'll already be taking Trig. I know that grades are not enough (emphasis on the not), but is there the slightest chance available for me out there? Any tips? Advice? Btw, I already know about things like the SAT's, ACT's, essays, legacies, etc.

Resolved Question: Do you believe that Obama is the media's "darling"?
(Wed, 04 Nov 2009 16:53:41 GMT)
PLEASE READ ALL OF THIS.....IT IS THE ABSOLUTE TRUTH. The media inferred over and over that George W. Bush was an idiot....Hmmm....My, how the press has changed... If George W. Bush had been the first President to need a teleprompter installed to be able to get through a press conference, would you have laughed and said this is more proof of how inept he is on his own and is really controlled by smarter men behind the scenes?
