- Open Question: If the Senate can't run a cafeteria, how can they run a country?
(Tue, 10 Jun 2008 18:10:56 GMT)
Retirement strategy :
WASHINGTON â?? The famed bean soup served in Senate restaurants is made up of dried navy beans, smoked ham hocks, onions and a million-dollar tab for the taxpayer.
That menu for financial distress could be about to change as the Senate, following the lead taken by the House more than 20 years ago, moves to privatize the restaurants, coffee shops and cafeterias located in the Capitol and Senate office buildings.
The Senate last week passed a bill authorizing Senate restaurants, now run by th
- Open Question: Balancing 401k and Roth IRA?
(Thu, 05 Jun 2008 18:41:15 GMT)
Retirement strategy :
I asked this question in more detail in the Investing category, but I was wondering in general if this is a good strategy:
IF my 401k options are mediocre,
BUT my Roth IRA investments are better,
THEN would it be best to drop the 401k options where they overlap with the Roth IRA and put most of my 401k into the stable value/money market option it offers? In other words, a conservative 401k balanced with a more growth-focused Roth IRA?
Thanks for your input! I'm 44 years old by the way, and a

If you have a lick of sense, you'd balk at the idea. Would you trust your money to someone who has a thin resume at best and moreover a record of losing money to handle your future? Why then are those of you trusting someone who has NO

- Resolved Question: Should I stay conservative in my investments?
(Mon, 26 May 2008 00:15:52 GMT)
Retirement strategy :
I'm just a poor baker who is trying to save for retirement (20+ years to go). Money doesn't come easily so I save as much as I can. I have a 401k (I pay the company's match) and a Roth IRA. I'm hesitant about investing further in mutual funds (I know individual stocks are too risky). My uncle tells me to stay conservative, to stay in bonds and avoid stocks. But he owned a successful business and now he's trying to protect his wealth. I might have to use a different strategy. Does anyone else f
- Voting Question: Why get a retirement account?
(Wed, 14 May 2008 01:47:10 GMT)
Retirement strategy :
What are the benefits of a retirement account? Are all retirement accounts invested in stock? My company retirement account is down like 6% right now probably due to the downturn in the stock market--if I had not put the money into my retirement account, and put it in a CD or savings account , I wouldn't have losses like that. Is it just part of diversification--you put some money in a retirement account, other money in a CD for safety, and potentially you could make more (but also lose mor

- Voting Question: Increased Retirement IRA Distributions, Now or later?
(Wed, 30 Apr 2008 16:54:44 GMT)
Retirement strategy :
I have been considering a 7 or 8% ditribution at age 60 through age 66. In this way I can put off collecting my social secuity benefits until they are at a higher dollar amount. Of course this will not leave any room in my IRA for inflation protection and the IRA may actually go down in value if my investments do not keep up with this rate of withdrawl. Any comment on this strategy? Otherwise I will need to take SS benefits at 62.
- Resolved Question: I need help with life insurance strategies: Which market should I target and which products should I sell?
(Mon, 28 Apr 2008 03:55:56 GMT)
Retirement strategy :
I'm starting out as a life insurance salesman. I wish to use my time efficiently. Therefore, I need help to target the right demographic market and life insurance products for this market.
For example, I could target executives making over $100,000 per year, and the product is a combination term insurance with some UL. The term part goes to retirement, and the smaller UL part continues until death.
Any brilliant ideas would be helpful.
- Resolved Question: Can I retire without owning a home?
(Thu, 24 Apr 2008 18:48:23 GMT)
Retirement strategy :
I will retire in 10+ years and my retirement saving is on track. Due to job hops/relocations, I missed a chance to buy a house before the area home prices went stratosphere (CA). I have saved up what could have been my mortgage payments (minus rents) and its sum is large enough to buy a house all cash. If I buy (similar to the house I'm renting right now), the property tax alone would cost far more than my current rent. I'm afraid that owning a home can be a big money sucker.
I'm thinking

Retirement strategy :
The question has been brought up many times about whether or not Packers GM Ted Thompson was wise or foolish in not trying harder to accomidate Favre coming back. Why didn't he try to bring established weapons to the team, especially Randy Moss? Brett said it best at his retirement conference, at his age and experience anything short of another Super Bowl win would be a failure. I personally feel that Thompson is doing what's best for the Pack in the long run. Let's face it, even if there

My parents are close to the age of retirement (late 50s/early 60s) but not quite ready to retire. They have little experience with computers. English is not their primary language but they can speak it proficiently and don't have any trouble conversing in daily situations.
They are getting older now and need to think of an exit strategy.

- Resolved Question: Why are people worried about the stock market right now?
(Wed, 23 Jan 2008 03:29:26 GMT)
Retirement strategy :
My thoughts are those who are worried are nearing retirement and have a high percentage of their funds invested in the stock market. Is this the case? Is it safe to assume younger people are probably not concerned as their stocks will go up in the long term? So is the "safer" strategy to change your investment portfolio as you get older? While you are young, invest highly in the stock market and as you get older move the money from your stocks into lower risk bonds. Is this correct? Than

I played Life as a child and just brought the game for my own children. Either I've gotten a lot slower or the game has gotten a lot harder. Things that are hard to understand:

Yet the "salary" cards are confusing....only two careers require degrees and the salary cards might pay $20,000 to a doctor and $80,000 to a policeman (as h

Being responsible now by funding IRA's will backfire later when I will not be paid as much as someone who didn't save. Not saving is not an option. Okay, I have had a problem saving for an emergency fund. I always seem to end up dipping into it for some reason or another.

So here is my plan:
1) Increase my Roth IRA investments and add Spousal Roth IRA investments.
2) As I contribute the "extra", move the sa

I would like to use my 401k to payoff my mortgage. I'm willing to take the tax penalty just to get out of debt and not worry about a mortgage payment that as of today still has about 25 years remaining on it. I feel its less stress for me to save and invest money for the next 20 years (retirement age for me) as opposed to making my mortgage payment. I realize the tax penalty is steep, but I also feel its worth it since I don't want to continue working at this pace just to payoff my mortgage
