- Resolved Question: Is it worth it to be in a pension plan?
(Thu, 24 Apr 2008 17:10:46 GMT)
Teacher retirement system :
Is it worth it to be in a pension plan?
I am apart of the Teacher Retirement System. I make 33,000/ year right now, but I have the earning potential of 65,000 come retirement time. Should I move on and work for corporate America or stay? Pension plans continue to pay per month until you die. Is it worth it to stay with the pension plan? What is your guess that in 35 years the thousands of people that took part in a teacher retirement system in every state will actually get enough to live off
- Resolved Question: 401K Withdrawl question?
(Thu, 17 Apr 2008 18:33:54 GMT)
Teacher retirement system :
I have a 401k with Nordstrom. I was employed there over the summer. Now they told me I have 30 days to do something with my funds it or I would receive a distribution of the funds (I think). The reason they are doing this is because the amount is so little, it's $175. So my question is should I just take the money and pay the penalties or should I do a rollover into a completely new account that I would set up and what sort of account would be recommended?
I have another account with the Teach
- Resolved Question: Is it wise to invest on both a TRS (Texas Retirement System) and a 403B at the same time?
(Tue, 15 Apr 2008 14:10:31 GMT)
Teacher retirement system :
I am a teacher in a public education system. When I was 23, I knew nothing about retirement programs. But I do know it is important to save up for my golden years knowing that social security benefits would probably not be as lavish on us as it is on the older folks these days. That is a stroy in itself.
Going back to my question, I did get a 403B plan which I contribute about $75 per paycheck (26 in a year), plus $110 goes to the TRS. Both are retirement plans.
I am now 29 and ridiculously

I am apart of the Teacher Retirement System. I make 33,000/ year right now, but I have the earning potential of 65,000 come retirement time. Is it worth it to stay? What is the prognosis in 35 years + on such retirement plans anyway?
- Resolved Question: Parents who have pulled your kids out of public school??
(Mon, 17 Mar 2008 21:03:23 GMT)
Teacher retirement system :
Why can??t some of the parents who are unhappy about how bad schools are work together to help make changes? We as teachers truly cannot change what is going on. To speak up against standardized testing, NCLB and horrific discipline problems as a teacher gets us blackballed in a school district and it can be nearly IMPOSSIBLE to find a job. Instead of working to improve things, parents are pulling their kids out of public schools and sending them to private schools. But if all those parent

- Voting Question: A question for teachers: Explain the policy of "double-dipping" regarding retirement.?
(Wed, 27 Feb 2008 05:40:12 GMT)
Teacher retirement system :
My wife is a veteran teacher at 60 years old who would like to retire. She has 17 years in private schools under the social security system. She also has 16 years in a state retirement system while teaching in public schools. In Kentucky, she is only allowed to retire from one system or the other, yet she earned both. This just doesn't seem fair - has anyone found a way to beat this? She would only get about 30% of her social security if she retires from her state pension. If she goes to socia

- Resolved Question: Do you think a parent should leave an annuity after death even if it means she collects less while living?
(Mon, 21 Jan 2008 00:56:43 GMT)
Teacher retirement system :
I'm ready to retire after 30 years with the teacher retirement system. I can choose from different options and the standard amount is a fair amount to live on if after my death I leave nothing to my adult children. If I choose to leave an annuity for my children after my death, I would be receiving a lot less per month while I'm living. Should I be a priority or my children?

- Resolved Question: Does $2,000-$3,000 a year in pay make a real difference?
(Sun, 23 Dec 2007 04:16:35 GMT)
Teacher retirement system :
I used to work in one county (Fairfax County Public Schools in VA) as a school counselor and am currently a stay at home mom. When my son starts 1st grade (in about 3-4 years), I plan on going back to work. I currently live in a different county (Prince William in VA) but want to go back to Fairfax Co b/c my husband currently is a teacher for that county and b/c I'm familiar with it (also the biggest county in VA and a good school system). The pay is also about a $2-3,000 increase with Fairf

- Resolved Question: Should I sign up for the teacher retirement system?
(Thu, 05 Jul 2007 16:33:05 GMT)
Teacher retirement system :
I just got my first teaching job and I don't know if I should sign up for the teacher retirement system. I heard they take out around 9% per paycheck. My financial advisor thinks that it would probably be better off to invest that money into an IRA. Are there benefits to the teacher retirement system compared to an IRA? I will be teaching in Illinois, if that helps any.
- Resolved Question: Can someone explain how the NYS Teacher's retirement system works?
(Wed, 13 Jun 2007 00:28:44 GMT)
Teacher retirement system :
I have been teaching in NY for 8 years. I want to take some time off to raise my children. Of course this would mean that I would forfeit my tenure in the district where I am presently employed, but what will happen if I am not "vested"? I keep hearing that you need to teach for 10 years to get benefits. Do they need to be 10 consecutive years? How or where can I find out more about this?
I forgot to mention that I am thinking of leaving my district anyway because the conditions are unfa

- Resolved Question: Do I have to pay state tax on a retirement refund?
(Wed, 07 Mar 2007 19:26:09 GMT)
Teacher retirement system :
I used to teach in California, but have lived in Texas for about 4 years now. Last year, I decided to withdraw my retirement savings from the California Teachers' Retirement System. They deducted federal tax but did not deduct state tax because they said they didn't have to since I live in a state that does not have a state tax. Anyway, my tax person in Texas swears that I have to pay state taxes in California (which does have a state tax) because the money was coming from there. Anyone have t
- Resolved Question: Where are the parents who care about public education ??
(Thu, 01 Mar 2007 15:27:58 GMT)
Teacher retirement system :
Parents, it's up to you. Teachers can't change the testing trend. We get blackballed if we speak up. We can't teach with all this testing going on! Parents are concerned about grades on standardized tests(s.t.'s). Be concerned about their education, their future. Parents move their children to communities that score well on s.t.'s. They think they are doing right. These schools have little incentive to teach your child anything above the requirements of the s. t.'s. Good teachers are
- Resolved Question: So what is Moutain Home, AR really like?....Should I move there?
(Fri, 16 Feb 2007 18:59:09 GMT)
Teacher retirement system :
Im orriginally from a small town in OK, and my wife from a middle sized town in FL. We currently live in a growing city in Sebring, FL. The city we live in now is primiarily a retirement city. My wife is in the medical field and has an opportunity to get a traveling job that would bring us to Mountain Home, AR for at least 13 weeks and possibly more. We only have 3 days to make this decision, so we want to find out as much as possible about the place. We like to do some things, but spend alot
- Resolved Question: What can be done to stop the obscenly powerful teachers unions?
(Sat, 27 Jan 2007 02:30:59 GMT)
Teacher retirement system :
The collective bargaining power and political clout of teachers unions allow teachers to receive contracts that often run to more than 100 pages, and are filled with provisions for high wages, fantastic health benefits and retirement packages, generous time off, total job security, teacher transfer and assignment rights, restrictions on how teachers can be evaluated, restrictions on nonclassroom duties, and countless other rules that shackle the discretion of administrators. These contracts ma
- Resolved Question: Why do we need an education system now that spanish is the preferred language?
(Wed, 10 Jan 2007 22:13:14 GMT)
Teacher retirement system :
I can get a job quicker by laying out in the sun, wearing a tattered shirt that says deportivo cruz azul, and speaking in tongues. So why not send our children into the work force at 10 years old so that they can get a head start on saving for retirement. That way we save our tax dollars by cutting out the 5th through 12th grade which also creates more personel(teachers, principals, janitors, cooks) for our labor force.

- Resolved Question: Social security question: Why won't the SS Admin. let me receive my money?
(Sun, 07 Jan 2007 17:26:37 GMT)
Teacher retirement system :
I am a retired state school counselor & teacher. I receive a nice retirement check from my states retirement system (but it is not enought...for me) while I am raising 2 grandchildren now. We gladly took them in about 10 years ago. Before I entered into education I had earned "40" quarters toward my SS contribution like all of us do, except in my state the SS Admin. will not let me receive my SS because I receive income from my teacher retirement. Is this right? Can they do that to me? I am cr
- Resolved Question: I as a worker for the school system needs assistance in asking for the elimination of the GPO?
(Sat, 09 Dec 2006 18:30:45 GMT)
Teacher retirement system :
I cannot due to the government pension offset, draw my full retirement pension from the teachers retirement and my full share of my spouse's social security. The government will deduct a huge percentage of my social security pension drawn on my spouse. We need to have Gongress do something about this matter. This affects so many people throughout the U.S.
Is there anyone that can give me assistance in trying to get the GPO (government pension offset) eliminated?
