In a traditional IRA income taxes are paid by distributions while by a roth IRA income taxes are paid by contributions.

- Voting Question: What is the best way to reduce taxes through retirement plans?
(Wed, 30 Apr 2008 03:18:46 GMT)
Traditional ira retirement plan :
I'm trying to find ways to reduce our tax liability as much as possible for next year's return, as my husband found a job after finishing college this year and our combined income should be about $102,000 come next April 15.
I earned about $60,000 last year and as joint filers, we got back $1600 from the IRS for 2007. According to the tax tables, (at our current W-4 exemptions) we should owe IRS about $1200 next year if we don't do anything, so I'm trying to find out which retirement plan
- Resolved Question: TSA or IRA???
(Tue, 29 Apr 2008 05:08:38 GMT)
Traditional ira retirement plan :
I am currently 26 years old and have a yearly income of $70,000. I have no major investments, rent an apt and have minimal debt (small student loan, small car loan and no credit card debt). My employer offers a pretty good retirement program and it's composed of 3 parts:
1. Pension at retirement ( 1.5% of my final average monthly compensation X years of credited service)
2. Employer paid retirement saving account (my employer contributes 5% of my salary per period to a savings account

Traditional ira retirement plan :
I am 21 years old, and am currently self-employed and plan on being so for a very long time. So, since I will never have a 401k or anything like it from an employer, I have been trying to find a good way to start saving for retirement now. I can only afford to put away about $50 a month, and have been looking into IRA's but I'm having trouble understanding the differences between the Roth and traditional. Can anyone explain the differences in layman's terms and how they affect my yearly taxes
- Resolved Question: Life cycle fund question?
(Sun, 13 Apr 2008 19:33:21 GMT)
Traditional ira retirement plan :
I am 38 years old and have had $60000 invested in a traditional IRA fund with a target retirement date of 2040, for the past two years. I bought the shares at $9 and the expense ratio is .82%. Recently, I have been made aware of just how much the expense ratio will cost me over the long-term and so I opened another fund with a target retirement date of 2035. This new fund's shares are $13.50 and the expense ratio is .19%. Both funds yearly returns have performed within 2-3% of each other.
- Resolved Question: Help me optimize my tax for IRA and 401K together?
(Fri, 11 Apr 2008 23:13:56 GMT)
Traditional ira retirement plan :
I have 401K plan with only $200. Also have traditional IRA account with 4000$. Filing jointly with my spouse. Total AGI is 160000. My spouse is not covered by any other retirement plan, has a traditional IRA with 4000$. How can I get the maximum tax benefit in this situation ?
My question is if I have 401K account for only 200$, can I not get deduction on my IRA, given that I am filing jointly and have AGI of 160000. is there a limit on combination of 401K + IRA that would limit my deduction

(Thu, 21 Feb 2008 14:13:13 GMT)

I already am invested in my current companies 401a plan (5 1/3% of paycheck goes towards this) but it's time to start putting more towards retirement. (I'm 34).
6+ years ago I left my job in which I still have just over $10K in their 401k with Merril Lynch. Well it's been long enough and I need to start doing something with that money. - Resolved Question: Traditional IRA versus ROTH IRA?
(Tue, 19 Feb 2008 21:18:17 GMT)
Traditional ira retirement plan :
My fiance has moved to a new job. The previous job set up a retirement account for her. The account dropped below $1000 (to $990) so Fidelity told her she needed to do something with the account. I believe the employer requires the $1000 minimum. She has a few options, take the cash (minus the taxes and penalties), create a traditional IRA, or create a ROTH IRA. We want to keep the money invested. We know the difference between a Roth and a traditional. We just dont know which would be

- Resolved Question: employee retirement plan/cash out questions?
(Fri, 08 Feb 2008 19:43:27 GMT)
Traditional ira retirement plan :
I am 100% vested in a retirement account from my previous job. I have 6,800 dollars that I can cash out or roll into a traditional IRA. I prefer roth but they specify traditional. Paperwork states that if I cash it out I am taxed 20% upfront plus an additional 10% for being younger than 59. I have tried to read and understand the fine print on the IRS website, but still have questions.
If I cash it out, is the 30% withdrawn before I get the checK? I know the 20% does, but I don't know about
- Resolved Question: Regular 401k, Regular IRA, and my wife's Roth IRA plus our Investment?
(Thu, 07 Feb 2008 22:22:22 GMT)
Traditional ira retirement plan :
I'm using simple terminology to help others who may benefit from my questions.
Facts: our planned retirement age 62, won't live in USA, we will have 5 sources of income: my 401k + IRA + military pension, her IRA , & our investments.
Unknowns: Social Security for us, & my employer's pension; not planning on them.
1. I have a regular 401k. Would like to know what mandatory US government deductions (e.g., taxes) will I owe on each withdrawal? A simple line-item answer is fine.

I've done online research but the sheer amount of information is a bit overwhelming. - Voting Question: How can I maximize my Government Thift Savings Plan during retirement?
(Mon, 14 Jan 2008 19:25:46 GMT)
Traditional ira retirement plan :
Here is the basic problem. The funds that I have in my federal thrift savings plan have been saved without taxes being applied, similar to a 401k or a Traditional IRA. As I remove these funds they will be taxed. As I remove the funds can I put them into a Roth IRA? The question is how much can I transfer at one time? Can I put $100,000 into the account or am I restricted to $4,000 per year. I will be over 59 and a half when I retire. Do I have a better option?
- Resolved Question: Retirement -- what to do after employer's 401(k) match?
(Sun, 23 Dec 2007 18:23:39 GMT)
Traditional ira retirement plan :
Hi all. For the first time, I'm finally eligible for my employer's 401(k) match, so I'm going to start saving for my retirement (way too late, but at least I'm starting!). They match 50% up to 5%. I believe I've read that you're only supposed to contribute the maximum to max out the match and then put the rest in a Roth IRA. With my new job, I make $180k (twice as much as my old job, which is why I'm not more financially together at this point). I'm single, 33 and live in NJ. I do qualify for

Rolling over a sizable ($200k+) traditional IRA from a previous employer and don't have much time to pick investments. Found a collection of 12 ETF's that result in much more diversity than just the S&P500 (small vs large; international vs US; value vs growth). Not interested yet in Bonds since I still have 20+ years till retirement. Figure the ETF's will minimize annual expenses vs mutual funds. I do plan to rebalance anually using a discount broker & review prospectus information. My qu

Traditional ira retirement plan :
I have educated myself with a lot of information on investing, retirement planning, and income growth since I've graduated from college and started working in the real world. I have conveyed this information to my dad and he seemed interested.
